This wasn't a spur of the moment visit that he set up, this has been a thing for weeks. Last second backs out. Loy still seems to think that he visits at sometime before shutting recruiting down.

This is where I hate recruiting media. If there wasn't such a rush to break a story, this could have been different.

That goes both ways, though. And I think it probably saved Kolin Hill from visiting Texas at the last minute (unless he straight up told ND that he was thinking about it, but either way, just saying).

I'm fine with this scenario, because I think our coaches and the negative recruiting they deal with, would get caught with their pants down more often than not with 'sneaky visits'.

Loy fucked this up hard, IMO. Have no idea why he leaked it Monday.

Why do you say that? Loy's job is to report legit news ASAP. That's what he did. He can't help it if Hoke has cult-like control over committed players who want to visit elsewhere.

That can be your "job" and you can still fuck stuff up. It's not mutually exclusive.

If he didn't scoop the visit, someone else would have. He gets paid to talk to recruits and report breaking news. That's journalism lol.

It wasn't Loy that messed it up. He never revealed the name. It was Sampson over at Rivals that revealed the name yesterday morning.

Didn't have to, it was all implied as of Monday. People figured it out in a hurry who didn't know, and it was Loy's tweet that got the public ball rolling.

If it was stone cold locked in then that's news to report. If it's not, and he's "thinking" about a visit, then wtf are you doing besides trying to grab eyeballs with a rumor?

We'll personally, I don't blame Loy. Michigan seemed to out recruit us early for Crawford and so far it's paying off.

If that's the case, someone on our staff needs to make it clear to Loy that his access to the program is going to be seriously restricted unless he starts exercising some discretion.

This is a weird situation. Rivals was riding Loy's coattails here. They followed up with Shaun about the visit and he told them what was going on. If Loy doesn't break this as news and keeps quiet Rivals probably has no idea whats going on and never calls Shaun (Shaun doesn't have to say anything to rivals). Loy is/was trying to gain some cred by knowing whats happening first. In turn, everybody and their mother calls Shaun. Including Steve Lorenz, UM staff, Rivals and the word gets out and Shaun bails. Who's fault is it? Not sure I can put all the blame on Loy. I think it was a series of events that are unfortunate but Shaun did come public with the info to rivals. I think everybody takes some blame here.

Also, bare in mind that did the Crawford's really think they could go to ND's spring game without word getting out? Brady Hoke would've still called him, Steve Lorenz would still be begging him, and rivals would have called as well. The UM staff and fanbase would be even more pissed if he went without telling them

When Loy first put out his article, I asked and was told who it was within 5 minutes.

I agree with this.

We are losing the battle against Michigan. Why blame anyone? They won this one and we lost.

Josh Helmholt on Rivals brought up something we haven't discussed: Crawford never told anyone to keep it silent. He was very open about it.

EDIT: Helmholt was only referring to when Crawford talked to II. Apparently Loy did break the "hush hush" covenant.

I dont think Loy was wrong nor do I think Rivals was wrong in reporting it. Its their job. If Crawford/Crawfords family asked for them to keep it quiet, then I am sure it would have been. The media is media. They burn bridges by reporting stuff too soon/stuff that they shouldnt at that time and then they lose sources and "scoop". So for them to go to a "mystery" recruit visiting....someone wanted it out there. I do think it was somewhat childish to report a mystery kid and leave it at that. Just report the name or dont.

If a kid bases his "college decision" off of the media reporting a visit or potential visit, then he has his priorities messed up. I understand Michigans, no visit policy, but if you arent sold on a school and they pull the scholly bc you want to make a decision for you....then you shouldnt be there. Thats not a dig on Michigan.

9/10 they do for the last two decades.

(It seems in this frustrating circumstance anyways.)

No need for stats fuckers. Just saying.

Yup. I'm with Lax and Whiskey here.

This would have never happened under Sapp. People keep giving Loy the benefit of the doubt, and he just keeps letting you down.

I don't think anyone has ever given Loy the benefit of the doubt. He had big shoes to fill, and everyone was skeptical that he could do it.

He's obviously not getting the benefit of the doubt here if you think he screwed up. He reported news that a lot of people pay for, and I don't see what he did wrong unless he was told by Crawford or ND not to report anything.

I get that it didn't help ND, but it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway, and how should he have known. He's not taking over JR Sandlin's job, he's a 247 analyst.

Everybody seems to be giving him the benefit of the doubt. How many fuck ups is this now? But people keep saying that "its not that big of a deal". I don't get it.

Sure, at some point Michigan's staff would have found out. But they wouldn't have found out Monday. That's why every other insider (Loy wasn't alone in this knowledge) kept their mouths shut. They kept them shut because they are professionals.

You're right, he didn't take over for a recruiting staff member for the program. So he should keep his nose out of affairs that directly put a negative impact on them. If i'm BK, I am sending a clear message that his access can be limited. Maybe not something permanent or too harsh. But if BK refused to answer any of his questions at the BG game, I would applaud it.

This kind of thing never happened with Sapp.

I'm not saying you're right or wrong I just want to ask you a couple questions.

1. What other fuck ups are you talking about?
2. How do you know the other insiders had the info and were sitting on it? I'm not on Il but from reading on here and BGI it seemed like Loy had it and the Il guys didn't. I was under the impression that they had to contact Crawford after the story because they hadn't heard about it.
3. Would it change your mind if Crawford and his family told Loy he could run the story that he did?
4. Don't you think all the recruiting guys know that they could lose access if they did something to screw over the staff? I would think that is carefully thought through before printing things.

Loy is either a blantant homer, which he has been accused of a million times on IE, or he is a journalist who reports recruiting information. I'm not sure he can be both ... at least in this instance. Are we equally as mad at all the people who repeated his information here on IE?

That's the problem, the job as a "reporter" in recruiting, especially when assigned to a specific team, allows for both.

He might put in CB's to ND for no apparent reason and with no evidence or hope to back it up, but he's also got a job to do. People pay for the recruiting scoop, and it's his job to provide it. That's why I can't blame him for putting the "secret visitor" info out there. If he's got the info, and the source hasn't specifically told him to keep it quiet, then he's got every right to put it out there.

We don't know if Crawford told him to keep it quiet (unless I missed something. Probability is good.). If he did, then he lost himself a source and really did mess up. But if he didn't, then it's nothing to go after Loy about. He has to make people happy by delivering the scoop while also staying in recruits'/ND's good graces. Sometimes those things conflict, and if he's never been given the official "red light," he's got the right to put whatever info he has out there.

I know where you're coming from Wooly, but the fact is that Loy's job isn't just about access from ND... this situation came from his access to the recruit. BK could limit his access to the program, sure, but that's not going to keep Loy from talking to recruits and getting the scoop. I think it's unfair to ask a reporter to "keep his nose out of affairs that directly put a negative impact on them." If Loy avoids reporting on things that aren't 100% gravy just to protect a potential commit for ND, then he's no better than many of the homer/sensational reporters that many on this site bitch about.

I agree with all of this with a small caveat. Why would anyone tell a reporter such a thing and expect it not to be reported? It's not like it an off the record piece of information that can add context to another story. If he didn't want the information to be reported, Crawford shouldn't have told a reporter ... which leads me to believe that he wasn't trying to keep this information quiet. Maybe Crawford was just testing the waters to see what would happen when Michigan Head Coach Matt Foley found out he was taking visits. Who knows.
