I agree, but on the surface idk if I feel comfortable putting them with that top group yet.

I wouldn't say I'm looking past them, and they had a tremendous finish to this past season despite starting off about as bad as they possible could, but I want to see how they do in the three or four games before ND has to play them before I put them with Florida State, USC, Michigan, etc.

I think they're better than Michigan now. But the Irish/UM game has a different meaning as well.

I agree with you actually, but I include Michigan over UNC in that top group because something screwy always happens in the Michigan game.

In 2011, Tommy Rees threw the pass that went nowhere and Gary Gray forgot how to turn his body.

In 2012, though ND won, the offense was pretty stagnant under Golson and then got ultra-conservative (minus a Tommy Rees [!] TD run) once he got pulled from the game. Denard throwing punts with his arm helped as well.

In 2013, Gardner decided to have a career day and the ND secondary forgot how to tackle on a few drives.

All three games, I think ND was the better team, but ND likes to shit the bed for whatever reason while Michigan catches the favor of fortune.

UNC has a special teams unit that can wins games on its own...

This is honestly my only true concern for this game. Maybe their offense or defense will magically make a leap forward, but if we're being serious for a second... if you accept that UNC is a team we should be afraid of, then we we should be varying levels of "terrified" to "scared shitless" of other teams on our schedule.

It's also not just UNC... it's UNC in the middle of a grind... that's different than playing UNC after a bye week and before Eastern Michigan. If we were to rank pure threat on a single game basis I'd prob have UNC somewhere in the middle of our schdule...

Honestly though, UNC had a horrid start and was one of the better teams in the ACC during the second half, so they are riding that also.

I'll take your guarantee and challenge it.
2014

Aug. 30 RICE
Sept. 6 MICHIGAN (night)
Sept. 13 * Purdue at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Ind. (night)
Sept. 27 at Syracuse (MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.)
Oct. 4 STANFORD
Oct. 11 NORTH CAROLINA
Oct. 18 at Florida State
Nov. 1 vs. Navy (FedEx Field, Landover, Md.)
Nov. 8 at Arizona State
Nov. 15 NORTHWESTERN
Nov. 22 LOUISVILLE
Nov. 29 at USC

2015
Sept. 5 TEXAS
Sept. 12 at Virginia
Sept. 19 GEORGIA TECH
Sept. 26 MASSACHUSETTS
Oct. 3 at Clemson
Oct. 10 NAVY
Oct. 17 USC
Oct. 31 at Temple (Lincoln Financial Services Field)
Nov. 7 at Pittsburgh
Nov. 14 WAKE FOREST
Nov. 21 * Boston College at Fenway Park, Boston, Mass. (night)
Nov. 28 at Stanford

2015 is a difficult schedule, of that there is little doubt. It's too early to really judge the difficulty because many teams surge while others regress but we are slated to play the defending national champions, as well as UNC, Louisville, Stanford, ASU and USC. Throw in Michigan and NW and we really don't have many cupcakes besides Rice.

While tough but realistic if we go 10-2 against that schedule I could see us making the playoff. For me the two most likely losses at this point.

No way, not unless theres a major conference champion that's also 10-2 and they have an unimpressive record. If PAC-12 champ, SEC champ, ACC champ, Big 12 champ, and B1G champ all go 12-1 or 11-2 and better, we'll get left out I wager. In reality to make it to the playoff we need no more than 1 loss and possibly need to go undefeated to trump a one loss major conference champ. Of course, scenarios like this could just end up pushing the playoff to the inevitable 8 team format.

If we beat Florida State, we going to the natty.

We'll beat meat chicken.

And I'm pretty sure we'll beat Stanford.

10-2 is going to be tough to come away with. Though not impossible I still think USC could be a tough game plus games with UNC or ASU could be a loss. I think the key factor to this season is how well the guys gel with the new defense.

In regards to being able to make the playoffs at 10-2:

In 2013, the #4 team in the BCS Standings was 11-1 MSU. The #5 team was 11-2 Stanford.

In 2012, the #4 team was 11-1 Oregon. The #5 team was 11-1 KSU.

In 2011, the #4 team was 11-1 Stanford. The #5 team was 11-2 Oregon.

In 2010, the #4 team was 11-1 Stanford. The #5 team was 11-1 Wisconsin.

So, it would take a minor miracle for 10-2 to get us in the top 4. 11-1 should guarantee it.

And, holy shit Stanford has been good the past five years.

Exactly, although I wouldn't even say 11-1 would clinch the playoff for certain either. It should be fairly easy for OSU or another B1G team like MSU to run their schedule and get 11-1 or better in the regular season. Likewise you can expect Oklahoma and/or Texas again to make it through with just one loss. PAC-12 can be dicey with Stanford, Oregon, USC, and whoever else is playing good that year so maybe 1-2 losses for that conference champ. SEC champ is probably a 1 loss team, as is whoever the ACC crowns. Just looking at the last 4 seasons that you put up there, we could be the 11-1 team on the outside at #5 that doesn't get into the playoff. I would hope that our strength of schedule is good and it makes a case for us, but there could be an uproar if theres another major conference champion at 11-1 or 12-1 and they get snubbed.

Deep Green Lime-flavored Waters running here.

Don't quite buy it in a defensive transitional year, but I'll sip the koolaid under my shadetree for a while anyway.

{Actually, if somebody offered me 10-2 with Michigan and USC sure victories, I'd take it}

By the way, some have debated whether Everett might be the best athlete on the field in each of our games. To my mind he might well be. Any guy who was being recruited as a UNC basketball point guard has some extremely elite athleticism when coupled with his football recruitment.

Kool-aid drinker here. If he goes undefeated this year, would u hate on him going to the draft?

....

HE HAD 12 TD'S his first year and got benched numerous times. Plus he took a year off. Who would draft him?

If somehow he throws 40 TD's then sure.

I am really not trying to be a dick because I have seen people bring it up on other boards and it blows my mind that it gets brought up.

I don't understand this argument. In college, it's not a life time achievement award. Production as a freshman means very little. There are a ton of examples of having one huge year as a JR and cashing in at year's end.

It's extremely plausible that Golson will have an opportunity to get drafted after this year.

Side note, lately, the way you respond to posts you don't agree with has been really annoying.

He was bench once, against Michigan. The other 2 times were due to injuries. Against Purdue, I believe he suffered a wrist injury to his throwing arm. While he could've played, Kelly didn't want to risk the game on an injured QB when they had a reliable option in Rees, who was healthy. Against Stanford, he suffered a mild concussion.

Sorry I don't read the other boards so I didn't know.
Lets give him Descent stats 25TD 10Int. 2800 passing and 450 rushing.
Goes 12-0 loses a close one in playoffs and lead 3 come from behinds.

Yes he was benched after his helmet came off in the second quarter. After Rees threw a pick, Golson was put back in the game.

Might sound stupid, but I'd think less of him if he left because I think he owes it to the university to graduate after they gave him the second chance.

Normally, I don't blame anyone for leaving early in the slightest.

Wouldn't this be his senior year? I guess he might be missing credits from the academic issue, but I'd think he may be close to graduating.

You're both correct about Purdue. He did get hurt and was taken out of the game. He could have come back in, but BK decided to stay with the guy that had experience and was moving the ball.

I expect Golson to have a very good year. And I think it's crazy to think he'd leave at the end of the year.
