"Sam Mustipher: A D-Line Option"

I saw this headline on 247, interesting.

Yeah, GREAT in-depth article by Lou Somogyi about Mustipher. Seems like a great kid, smart, academics-focused, wants to be an engineer ... perfect fit at ND.

Mustipher's high school DL coach is Kevin McFadden, who played DL at Cincinnati and I believe was in the NFL briefly before he got hurt, and McFadden claims that Mustipher could be a NFL 3 tech. He thinks that burst, leverage and foot placement are all strengths of Mustipher's. OSU and other schools were recruiting him as a DL.

Sounds like he would be a great prospect to at least cross-train at DL as a backup option, if we get into a jam.

I mean, we're loaded at OL and we'd trade our washing machine for a DT at this point, so it seems like a no brainer to start him out there and see if it's a good fit.

it seems like we've had much better luck recruiting elite OL recently compared to DL. if we think Sam has the potential to be pretty solid on the DL and possibly have more upside i'd say move him to defense and we can use the extra spot in 2015 to add another OL with it very likely we're not going to take very many this upcoming cycle anyway

Aside from cheerleaders, no.

He's not on the '12-'14 Wrestling roster for his H.S.

I wonder if he did his sophomore or junior years? Football players who wrestle have great footwork, balance and know how to explode off that first step.

He was NOT on the Wrestling Roster for any of the past 3 seasons.

Good stuff!

Nice (and nasty)

4.2 speed to unleash

Dad reared in the projects.

No quit.

But enquiring minds want to know ...

Did he ever wrestle?

Will he be an interior DL? (where nasty and speed are devastating! DLs get Sacks, Hurries, and Battered Passes. OLs get False Starts and Holding Penalties)

I want to know if he can play inside backer. Make the big switch. Eddie Vanderdoes had the potential, I think Sam does too.

This kid seems to have a good sense of humor. Should be a crowd favorite before he leaves.

Scout.com: Mustipher's Musings: Approaching the big day

I've taken the past few days to contemplate my decision. Is it the right school? What are the positives? How about the negatives? Am I ready to cross this threshold into a new world? I've even asked less daunting questions. What do I wear? What food will they be serving at the school event? To go to school for the remainder of the day or to take a mental health day? All of which I believe are important questions, especially the one about food.

For sure. It will be fun to read his interview in the media guide in the years to come. i used to get a kick out of the player interviews in them, especially in the early 1990's and the Olinemen in particular used to be hilarious. They had some funny little anecdotes about Lou.

Yeah. We've got so many talented o linemen in the freshman/incoming freshman classes. We've got to find ways to get more of them on the field. If Mustipher can turn around and play, D, that'd be great.

He is not a DL. You dont turn your best players to positions that they havent played. Its not high school, ND needs depth on the Oline just as much as the DL.

Great interview TP much appreciated!

Yeah I can't see him switching either. Just watched his tape and possible AA @ guard if he adjusts to the college weight program. He moves well and finishes blocks. I thought he pulled pretty well too but kinda looked choppy to me. That will be fixed with HH directing him though.

Completely agree. He is a guard and will always be a guard, maybe a center idk.

I must say, after reading the '10 questions' with the recruits, Sam has been my favorite. I love his sense of humor. That will be what gets him thru the tough times of his freshman year, I think. I certainly look forward to seeing what the next decade brings to ND. It has been a long journey, thru some not so great times, but I think ND is on the path to dominance!!!

I really like this kid. Not only does he have a great sense of humor but he also is extremely well spoken for an 18 year old kid. Can't wait to see him in blue and gold next season.
