...and a couple of OL targets still in play are potential C players/have C experience. Would be good for Sam and for ND if he stayed another year.

He has been having a good year, knock on wood. Last year he had a few mental mistakes and bad snaps that contributed to drive killing penalties and negative plays. Haven't really seen that this year.

A lot of talk going around about the possibility of Sam leaving for the NFL. Here's Walter Football's latest ranking:

WalterFootball.com: 2018 NFL Draft: Center Rankings

#13 - Sam Mustipher, C, Notre Dame
Height: 6-2. Weight: 305.
Projected 40 Time: 5.24.
Projected Round (2018): 6-FA.

10/14/17: Mustipher has played well overall in 2017. He has helped the freshman on the right side because the Fighting Irish have a dominant left side of the line. Mustipher lacks strength to get movement for the NFL and has some size limitations. Those issues could be seen as he had some struggles with Georgia and its NFL talent on the defensive line.

7/17/17: Mustipher took over as the starting center after Nick Martin moved on to the NFL. He had a decent season, but has some size issues for the NFL. Mustipher has the luxury of playing next to an elite guard in Quenton Nelson. Mustipher is a senior, but has two seasons of eligibility, so he could return to Notre Dame in 2018.

A lot of big name / big bodied talent coming out at OC for the '18 draft.

Nice to have the confirmation in writing but this was 99% expected. Sam might be having a Top 5 college OC season but he's not that high on the NFL's wishlist.

Sam Mustipher, C
Last year's starting center for Brian Kelly's club, Mustipher is a former four-star recruit according to 247 Sports. His combo-blocking skills are impressive. He's loose-hipped and has light feet when reaching the second level.

At a little over 6-2 and 305 pounds, Mustipher has a requisite NFL center frame, I'd like to see him get nastier and more powerful in man-on-man situations in his final season at Notre Dame. Those deficiencies were noticeable blocking for the run and when dealing with bull rushes in 2017. Pro scouts will love his athleticism, and physically gifted pivots don't grow on trees.

In what will likely be a run-first offense again, Mustipher will have ample opportunity to showcase his agility, which will bode well for him during draft season. As it currently stands, landing on Day Two seems most likely for the Notre Dame center.

So Sam was the only ND player named? Optimistic on his ability to keep our OL rolling nicely this year.

Finalist for the Rimington Trophy.

I know there have been some questions about his performance this season, but when it’s all said and done I think Sam is going to have earned the illustrious “Notre Dame Man” honor.

I hope he has a good pro career and makes a few mil to get his LAF well funded. I doubt he'll have much of a career in coaching... If you can't land your brother at ND, you're gonna really struggle as a recruiter down the room.

Can we just pop on the "Notre Dame Man" handle now?

Or is the waiting part of the fun?

Eh, maybe? In a general sense, any graduate is a Notre Dame Man, but on the board we've kind of made that distinction for a player that has gone above and beyond, or had to endure some kind of trial and overcome despite the adversity. Danny Spond having to quit football, but remaining with the team so he could coach up Jaylon was worthy. Tommy enduring death threats and benching for Golson, only to come back and be a starter again (And be part of the winningest class since '93) was worthy. Drue Tranquil coming back from 2 torn ACLs to become a captain and big time leader would be worthy. Sam Mustipher though? He's certainly a captain and a big leader on the OL, but has he gone above and beyond or overcome some kind of adversity like the guys above? I don't know if I can answer that.

...Manti playing through the loss of his gf...

I think at this point we can't completely fault him for that scenario. I think it got played up by the media and Manti did his best to roll with it. If he comes out in an interview and says "Well, I hardly knew her," how would that of come off? Once they had the angle it became the heart warming moment of the 2012 season and every time he got interviewed it got brought up. It just snowballed out of his control.

In any case, he did lose his grandmother, that was completely real. Manti was still pretty special on his own though. That defense was magical in 2012, and when reality hit before the bowl you could see Manti was not the same player. He easily had his worst game of the season after the truth came out. Manti had every opportunity to go to USC or BYU, both of which made more sense than ND. On a frigid cold day where we lost to Syracuse at home, he made his decision to come to South Bend. If I had to guess, some or all of those reasons are what earned him the moniker. He was the glue to that 2012 team, and without that season I'd bet that BK is not coaching today.
