That would be good reasoning. HOWEVER, that only works if Notre Dame meets their DL quota. They have not. To this point, ND has ZERO true NG. Matt Dickerson being the only one I'd consider a possible one in the making. This isn't one of those situations. ND whiffed on all of their DT prospects (Holley, Elam and Frazier).
There wasnt a huge push to get a DT this class. I have said this for almost a year, and people have disagreed with me. Getting a bigtime DT would have been great and helped the team out, but there arent very many good DTs in this class to choose from. DT and MLB have had 2 down classes the last two years, and thats part of the reason why ND hasnt gotten an elite player at those positions. EV was a luxury and obviously one of the better players in the country at his position already, but the defense didnt exactly fall apart without Nix this year. He had a hell of a season, but the problems on defense were not at DT.
From what I have been told, ND is at their quota for DL and they dont plan on breaking their word with other kids. Sure, if Holley picked up the phone, ND would listen. But, when the 2nd wave of offers went out and no DT was offered, that was a pretty solid indication of their view point. This DL class is just as solid as anyone in the country, outside of Alabamas. They have guys that can play inside or outside and guys that can stop the run along with guys that excel in pass rush. ND hasnt had a class like that for awhile, the 2011 class Ishaq/Tuitt/Lynch/Springmann/Hounshell is obviously the bar, but I think ND landed right at that hauls bar.
ND is just fine going into next season on the DL. Could it be better? Sure. I think every school in football can say that outside of Bama. Its a matter of getting on the training program as soon as they sign, so they can come in ready to compete. Athletic ability can be coached up and inserted into situations next fall. Lynch, Tuitt, Ishaq werent ready to play their freshman year mentally, but they were ready from a physical standpoint. I expect no less from the incoming kids. They all play with a chip on their solider and thats something some of the kids on the DL lacked over the last few years.
