Stanford is a more challenging school than Notre Dame with higher academic standards yet we hear nothing of their players having trouble staying eligible with 4 straight BCS games and top 10 finishes. RKG's maybe? I'm not sure, but I just don't get it.

It's like JUCOs but backwards. Rather than take your first two years to bring your grades up, they take a semester in the middle to get their skill up.

How is this suspension a "punishment" in any way, shape, or form? Leaving school for a semester and coming back in time for summer workouts is like a vacation.

DD had a high school GPA of 2.4 and an ACT of 19, I believe, while the average ND student is something like 3.7 and 34. Those differences are monumental, and we act surprised when some of them can't cut it in the classroom.

Really frustrates me, even if he plays in the fall. Sad, on another site it there is info on him looking at the draft. Man this sucks. Hope we can withstand all of the negatives once again. A lot to overcome--We lose our best offensive lineman, our best 4 lineman (1-4)-(day would be the only one that can get into the top 4), We lose our D Coor and a really good recruiter, our best kickoff returner, our best guard, our best receiver and now our 2nd best receiver as a possibility??

Wow, kind of sucks.

Now positively, we have EG coming back. Still have super Stud Freshman Smith, a great TE (if he doesn't bolt to the NFL too), Russell, Cole, and hopefully some really good freshman.

Our off seasons are never dull.

Another thing to bear in mind is that while we might not hear about this kind of thing happening at Stanford, it certainly happens in major sports at other top academic schools around the country. Reminded me of this from a couple days ago:

He will get his act together and i fully expect him to be starting come September.

ND has more stringent requirements than the NCAA in many areas.

Was he making satisfactory progress towards a degree?

Had ND, or his college in the University put him on probation previously for that?

They've found a formula of winning with high academic standards that I think we have, minus these key suspensions. For the most part we do an outstanding job of keeping our athletes successful in the classroom, but there's always room to be better and our benchmark, whether we like it or not, is Stanford's program.

Are you serious? You think DD spends his Thursday nights hunkered down in the library getting his study on, with the only limitations to his classroom success coming from his time committment to the football team?

I bet he's never at parties or getting drunk or high with his boys or anything.

"The equivalent to a full time job in Football" is the biggest bullshit argument I hear to justify these kids' behavior. Get this... Some people can rip off way above a 3.0 with the "equivalent of a full time job" in an actual FULL TIME JOB.

IMHO...biased some too...There is no other collegiate activity that demands more time and the physical and mental resources. Football at that level is a very heavy load.

I don't disagree that there are people who do well and have a full time job...although rarely are they asked to function in that environment with mush head, or some nagging injury where it hurts to breath...seriously, its not as easy as accounting for time / time management to determine the impact. My experience was, even when I was present for class, about a 1/3 of the time I was too tired or hurt to get anything from a lecture...so more time on my own to get it pounded in my head...and its all part of what you sign up for. The grades reflect the fact that no one on the academic side cares why you didn't master the material...which is as it should be...but we, out here, ought to understand the struggle, and not assume its as easy as time management...its not.

I am saying it is perfectly logical that a guy who is destined to be a 3.0 guy, could struggle when you add in football...all of this is conjecture, as I know nothing of DD...hell he could be a 4.0 guy who is underachieving. I have no idea what he does on Thursday...and yea he may screw around. I do know its easy to forget the mental and physical load football becomes at this level coupled with the academics at a real school that has real classes it expects you to attend and prove you learned something...playing football in college is tough for anyone if you are doing it right.

Well...if you have a short memory. They were 1-11 about 7 or 8 years ago and had 7 straight losing seasons in the 2000's. Football can be pretty cyclical.
