hmmm, not sure how I feel about this. he's a younger guy that fits the "team guy" mold though.

“In my mind, Coach Kelly sees his gold ticket to Ohio recruits in hiring Luke. I love Luke, but damn do I want him to move on. Let's all hope his wife can give the Irish the nod.
“Coach Kelly will be in Columbus Thursday or Friday and will meet with Luke.”
Stay tuned…

Whoa. That came out of nowhere but I love it. He'd be perfect. May want a fresh start since he has come under fire at OSU and was never really Urban's guy, but he has a linebacker background and he trained as a DC under a great (if slimy ...) coach in Jim Tressel. DO WANT.

On the surface, I think this would be an absolutely horrible hire for DC. I need to look at it more, but those defenses have been dreadful recently against very poor Big Ten offenses. Does he feel like he owes Meyer a solid for taking Warriner off our hands?

As just a linebacker coach... I would really like it. Most people think Meyer is going to can him after this season so that could be a very solid position coach hire.

Ohio State's defense has been terrible for the last 2-3 years. Hiring him as DC would be a disaster.

I think it has to be co-DC under Cooks, who would be co-DC/AHC, right? Fickell wouldn't take a demotion to position coach unless he is being forced out (which is possible).

The best part is all the awesome Adam Sandler gifs we could use.

I think people are focusing too much on the Urban portion of his career. He likely just never fit in under Urbie ... but look what he did under Tressel. Those were damn good defenses. We've been saying that the most important thing in college coaching is making sure you have a cohesive staff. I doubt Urbie had that with Fickell.

Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssssssssss if DC. If LB coach I could dig it.

Yeah, my thoughts too.

Although, something like co-DC with Cooks + LB coach I could definitely dig as well. What I don't want is him running the show on defense as the lead dog. If we're going to make an outside hire to do that, it has to be someone better than Fickell.

He apparently turned down the FAU HC job because it wasn't enough money. I doubt we would pay him more here to just be an LB coach.

From Bucknuts... I don't like that recruiting coordinator business unless Alford is just tired of doing it...hopefully....

“No official offer, but co-defensive coordinator and head recruiting coordinator was mentioned. (A member of Fickell’s family) is a Notre Dame fan, but says it's more Luke's wife’s decision than anything and the money will have to be good for the life she's grown accustomed to living. FAU was never a possibility because she would never have it and Luke more or less relayed that to Pat Chun weeks ago.

I think we're all on the same wavelength. I'm hoping that since he knows he's getting fired (he has to know that, right?) we're looking at him in that sort of capacity.

High school coach Kuerlic gets a lot of info from:

“I don’t have a problem with the schematics, I have a problem with the details,” the coach said. “The fact is, when you get to the core values of what this defense is, they are not playing fast. One of my staff members played for (Jim Tressel) at Youngstown State and we’ve talked about this several times: it is pretty easy to see that Luke (Fickell) has gotten away from the core values that made this defense so fundamentally sound during the Tressel years.

“The problems that exist occur because of a break between philosophy and deployment. It is completely possible that Fickell is serving two masters, trying to run the defense the way that (Jim) Heacock and he always had, versus injecting some of the stuff that (Everett) Withers, (Kerry) Coombs and (Urban) Meyer himself are bringing to the table. What was a clean and simple manuscript of rules and laws of Ohio State defense is being littered with all these other ideas, because UFM has his prints on the program and has the right to his say, Withers has a title and has his say, so on and so forth.

You're right. As we all know, Urban Liar inherited him. The admin promised him a job on staff after he held things together during the Tressel fisaco. Urban wasn't going to risk getting the job by telling the admin he didn't want him. Just a guess, but I'm thinking UM is a little too slimy for Fickell and some sort of a riff developed over time.

I'm with everyone else in that I'd hate to see Luke come in and jump all of the incumbents into the DC chair (and I hate to think what it would do to the staff dynamics), but I'd be perfectly OK with him as a LB coach, and if he needs the "co-DC" title to save face on the move then so be it.

On a side note: this guy's wife sounds like a peach, huh?

If Tressel wasnt to slimy for Fickell than shit, UM must be like Satan because I always thought Tressel was a dbag.

Didn't Jaylon have a great relationship with Fickell during his recruitment. Not to mention this guy just coached an AA in Shazier.

Like others, position coach, bring it. DC, no thanks.
