Can someone answer a question for me? I'm tired of hearing the announcer say "Michigan State is trying to get back to Pasadena". We know they go there if they win. If they would have lost, OSU would go to the NCG so who would go to the Rose Bowl instead of MSU? Wasn't it a given that MSU would go to the Rose Bowl win or lose?

The contractual obligation only applies to the conference champions. If OSU made it to the NCG, the Rose Bowl would've been able to take any at-large or automatic-qualifying team not already obligated. The Orange Bowl would get the first pick. They wouldn't be allowed to take Michigan State unless the Rose Bowl consented, but I'm sure a 15ish-ranked Sparty wouldn't be at the top of either bowl's list.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't expect the B1G to allow their refs to call a fair game. They're losing millions by letting Sparty win, right?

Actually they are gonna gain millions (likely). Now its likely MSU and OSU will both make a bcs game. A championship game payout is only 1 million less than a BCS game berth. I think that all the merchandise and sales that would have gained would solely have gone to OSU. So if anything, financially, the conference benefits from this outcome.

Not really. At two losses and no big wins they were pretty borderline for an at-large slot. The Rose Bowl would want a Big Ten team if available, but if they'd been blown out they might well have fallen out of the top 14, depending on how things fell.
But they're going now.

A bad loss could have seen them drop out of the top 14, but you're right that MSU was very likely headed to Pasadena regardless of tonight's outcome.
