BK: Field Turf is Coming

After a cold shower and further review of the link you posted there are two very intriguing names on the list of fields that have Desso GrassMaster installed. Aviva Stadium and Lambeau Field.

As was mentioned earlier in this thread we got to see how football was played on this type of surface last year in Dublin, Ireland. Not only did it hold up really well I saw tons of cutting and quick sticks in the ground without slipping or sliding. The team looked really fast in Aviva Stadium and extremely motivated but that's a topic for a different thread. Lambeau Field proves you don't have to surrender a team/schools tradition and values just because you use a new technology to better your teams performance legally. It honestly just seems silly not to do it at this point.

Color me ND Nation, but I feel that domed stadiums and artificial turf are the bane of sport. Shitty conditions are a part of life. Differences between natural and artificial turf attributed injuries are not statistically significant. Installation and maintenance costs may well be roughly equivalent over time.

The natural world is life, and should be respected and celebrated

.

I've gotten to the point where I've accepted it as a necessary evil. If Notre Dame were 500 miles to the south of where it is, it'd be a different story.

Also as TP stated a few posts back, a Jumbotron could really ENHANCE not diminish or destroy a lot of the traditions and values Notre Dame is known for. Notre Dame Stadium audiences for the first time ever could experience all this traditions and pageantry in a completely new and exciting way. Like TP said just imagine seeing the players touching the PLACT sign on their way to the tunnel and onto the field all the while building momentum and anticipation as the crowd whats for a glimpse of the players to reach the tunnel.

So many intriguing possibilities for ND to strengthen and enhance the brand they have worked so hard to build by using a jumbotron to further expand the message of the school, its beloved sports teams and student athletes that represent it.

Lots of teams do the pump up video before the game. It's a great way to get the fans going right off the bat. It might even get some of the older fans off their seats.

Found some interesting news in this article:
Uni Watch » Adidas Gives Birth to a One-Pound Baby Ball
Uni Watch Exclusive! Big changes possibly afoot for Notre Dame: A little birdie from South Bend, who I happen to trust, checked in last night with some interesting news about potentially big doings in the land of the golden dome. Here’s what the birdie had to say:

I don’t have all the details yet, but it appears that Notre Dame will announce major renovations and changes to Notre Dame Stadium. In May, the University officially announced a study into the feasibility of creating a multi-use stadium facility. The results of the study and the next steps will apparently be announced next month. My contacts who’ve seen some of the possibilities are very impressed. It appears that the stadium will add field turf, a jumbotron of some type, and some luxury seating and student-use areas beyond football.

Also: Notre Dame signed a 10-year deal with Adidas in 2005, and rumors are rampant that school officials met with Adidas on Tuesday to tell them that the university will not be continuing the relationship. I have not confirmed if that means immediate termination or non-renewal. Nike is mentioned as the likely replacement.

None of this is confirmed yet, so take that for what it’s worth.

Meltdown ensues…. Nike? wow can't imagine if this is released on ND Nation...

Nike > Adidas.

Better exposure, more popular with recruits, better uniforms, etc.

Do we all need to Google those atrocious basketball uniforms from last year, or the 2012 Shamrock uniforms?

I think what he was getting at is the meltdown speculating if ND ever did something with traditional unis along the lines of Oregon.

Nike's had some stinkers too. Didn't they make OSU's ugly alternate uniforms? Does Nike do any traditional uni schools (Penn State, Bama, etc.?)

I'm cool with composite turf, but a jumbotron could take some adjusting. I have always appreciated the purity of the traditional "focus on football" approach, but the reality is that today's version of entertainment just isn't the same conceptually that it used to be. In its most recent glory heyday of the late 80s/early 90s, ND stadium had a shrine-like feel to it, but that was back when the energy was more regularly consistent with expected championship realizations. I get that the "football only" approach is an old school train of thought that has lost touch with the twitter/15 second attention span societal direction. I mean this in a kindly condescending way. There are just way more distractions and information options to contend with.

Personally, I think I'd be cool with a jumbotron, if it was done tastefully. The worst aspect of the jumbotroning (sp) of ND stadium would be the advertising. I'm not a communist, socialist, whatever, but that stuff would get on my nerves. Keep it out. No kiss cams. No cheesy interviews. TP hype videos and the like, replays, and highlights only. :)

While we're at it, where is that music post again? The music is cool, but someone needs to chill on the repeat button. It loses it's effect quickly when it becomes predictable.

ND did a great job with the jumbotron in the JACC. While I was there, the only stupid part were some of the more cheesy player interviews and the fan cam. I don't know how it is in Compton, but I assume they did an equally good job. Nothing has shown that they don't know how to do a jumbotron well - quite the opposite, actually.

I just don't get this mentality. Do you feel the same about indoor plumbing and the combustible engine?

I highly doubt ND would ever allow Nike (or whomever gets the contract) to color that far outside of the lines.

Both Penn State and Bama are Nike schools. They do a lot of traditional uniforms, it's just the Oregon crap gets the most attention.

Nice. I thought they did. Well, as long as the alternate uniforms don't look disgusting, I'm fine with it.

Methinks he was in a Ford Pinto frame of mind ...

(Even though the Pinto problem was with the gas tank protection design and not a combustible engine. Just playin' along.)

Damnit! lol well played

Point being sometimes progress is good. I don't see the point in cutting off our nose to spite our face. If turf is what the program wants, then why not? As has been mentioned many times before, Lambeau Field was able to pull it off in a sensible manner.

Why not skip Phil Knight by having ND make a direct deposit in Oregon's coffers? Every school that contracts with Nike is funding Oregon's programs.

I really enjoyed being an Adidas brand.

Im all on board. I love Nike, and Notre Dame isnt going to completely abondon everything. We wont look like Oregon and im sure the stadium renovations will be really good too. Field turf is great, no sense of playing on a sloppy field with other options. I hope this is true, but either way some people wont be happy with results

ND should go back to Champion

I agree. I may even have expressed this same opinion before. Playfully, perhaps, but the move could well trim costs.

The savings could go to artificial (shudder!) turf and a Giagundotron as well a corral for "blue haired" fans, seat-filling and coffer-filling, who don't stand or scream their vocal chords raw continuously.

There are times when "less is more" is applicable.
