The good thing about Watkins is his size. The bad thing is his speed.

We've seen lots of corners these days be effective (or amazing) with a comparable athletic profile to what Watkins has. On our roster, he has a comparable athletic profile to Devin Butler. Richard Sherman is a guy in the NFL who is a little taller and has slightly slower speed and he might be the best CB in the league. Long, big CBs are perfect for the style of D that Diaco runs and Watkins fits the bill to the letter.

Yep. This kid is a prototypical CB for us and our style of D. Great get by this staff and Coach Cooks.

I am really psyched that with Keivarae, Luke, Butler and Watkins (not to mention Kinlaw, who is the scout team QB right now) we should be all set at CB for the next few years.

“It was amazing. The game atmosphere, the tailgating, everything,” Watkins said. “It really surpassed my expectations.”

Bishop Dunne coach Michael Johnson said the Irish will be “getting a playmaker” and “a coach’s dream.” Watkins, in addition to being a shut-down cornerback, also lines up for Bishop Dunne as a wide receiver. His versatility is one of his strengths, but having the opportunity to focus on performing as a cornerback is something Johnson is looking forward to seeing.

“They’ll get a kid who can lock down anybody and a smart football player,” Johnson said. “I think his best asset is he’s just a ballplayer. He’s had a great season so far, and he’s the season’s not over.”

Watkins never tipped his hat, but Johnson said, in conversations with Watkins, that Notre Dame always was in the lead. Alabama closed the gap with his winning ways and SEC credentials, but the race was the Irish’s to beat.

“I think him going to Notre Dame on that official visit,” Johnson said, “that really helped make his decision.”

I think Coach Cooks was just overly excited in getting such a play maker. He should know better but I could see where is bad judgment is coming from

I've been waiting for him to commit forr months. Glad it finally happened! Regardless of the depth we have at CB, he is probably physically and mentally ready to contribute as a true freshman.

Welcome aboard, Nick!

Probably the most appropiate gif for this celebratory moment (and i know I use it a lot, but it works for any great moment)...:

Are you not allowed to RT their "name" or "information" about their commitment? Seems like he didn't do the former.

You're not allowed to tweet the name. Information I'm not sure about, but I know Cooks has done this before, in fact he did it with Grant Blakenship too.

Maybe because he is from Texas. Earlier people had said it was not a California or Indiana kid. That's how I took it.

NCAA recruiting regs prohibit a school or coach from comments identifying a recruit, be it name or description, "the QB from Don Bosco, "#10 from P.S. 12".

Cooks posts are along the lines of "Buzz, Buzz" or "Big News Afoot" except you know what's about to happen is for real and not rumor.

You must be seeing them post-compliance telling him to cool it. He has undone the offending retweets which did include Watkins by name.

You're right about the tweets which are still up, however.

Great to add some additional depth/talent in the defensive backfield. In this era of "pitch and catch" football you can never have enough depth. Fired-up with this pick up. WELCOME Nick!

I love when we come out on top of offer lists like that.

No kidding. My favorite quote so far has been from the coach about Alabama "closing the gap" but he was set on ND. Frankly, any time Nick Saban wants a DB and you win out it's time to party.
