Just a thought here. Some ah read options packages this saturday would be a welcome sight. maybe it would open the rest of the running game as well.

Interesting thought. I expected to see more AH this year. I'm not surprised we haven't given the way the last three games have gone, but I think we'll see more as the season progresses. Not sure this is the right week though. If we do see him my guess is because our offense is struggling and that's not a good thing. However, how much time did OU dedicate to preparing for an AH sighting? Probably not much. I can't wait for tomorrow!

FO's Matt Hinton just predicted an Irish loss:

OKLAHOMA (–3.5) at NOTRE DAME• 3:30 pm (NBC)
The oddsmakers' faith in Oklahoma on the road reflects their faith in quarterback Blake Bell, who finally shed his one-dimensional, "Belldozer" reputation by passing for 413 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start, a 51–20 blowout over Tulsa. That was a far cry from the blueprint in the previous game, a low-scoring, mistake-filled slog against West Virginia, in which the Sooners kept the ball on the ground on 57 of 78 snaps and pulled starter Trevor Knight for Bell in the fourth quarter. (We learned later that Knight played part of the game on a bad knee, but that means little to a fan base that second-guessed the decision to start Knight over Bell in the first place.) With Knight, the Sooners were taking a shot on an undersized scrambler they hoped could do for them what Johnny Manziel did to them in last January's Cotton Bowl. With Bell, they're reverting back to their comfort zone: A big, statuesque presence in the pocket with an arm trustworthy enough to put the ball in the air 40 times per game. If nothing else, what he lacks in accuracy and consistency compared to Sam Bradford and Landry Jones, he makes up for in his value as a short-yardage runner.

In fact, Oklahoma's offense may look more like the attack that Notre Dame's defense held to 13 points last year than vice versa. Against Michigan, the Irish were torched for 41 points on 460 yards of total offense, numbers the 2012 defense would not have dreamed of allowing to anyone except Alabama. More reassuring box scores against Michigan State and Purdue haven't been able to mask how badly the defense misses Manti Te'o in the middle, as well as Stephon Tuitt as a reliable force in the pass rush. (Last week against MSU was Tuitt's best game of the early season, by far, an encouraging sign that he may be rounding back into 2012 form.) Landry Jones came out of last year's game with more yards (364) and a higher efficiency rating (124.2) than any other quarterback against Notre Dame in the regular season, but had no run support and barely made a dent on the scoreboard. These Irish have been just forgiving enough against the run to predict more time for Bell, and more importantly, more time for his receivers against a very vulnerable secondary.

Oklahoma 28, Notre Dame 23

Oklahoma-Notre_Dame_SDA_Box.png

As did SI's Stewart Mandel:

No. 14 Oklahoma (3-0) at No. 22 Notre Dame (3-1)
For all the preseason concerns surrounding quarterback Tommy Rees, the Irish's bigger issue has been the run game, currently averaging 114.3 yards per game (No. 100 nationally). This bodes well for an improved Oklahoma D that will drop defenders into coverage and force Rees to make bad throws. But the Irish defense is pretty darn good. Sooners quarterback Blake Bell is ready for the challenge.

Mandel ignores cause and effect. Our low run totals are caused by competition loading the box. I really hope Oklahoma rushes 4 and drops 7 so our run game can explode. Tommy will run all day if they do that.

I mean Tommy will hand off instead of pass. (before any of you jump off a cliff thinking I'm saying Tommy is going to carry the rock 40 times on Saturday)

I thought of the ties to last year and the overall history with OU... but last year almost all historical trends/data you could point to had ND beating Bama... so yeah...

OU should be favored, but ND can obviously win... time will tell.

Stone cold lock of the week: Tommy scores three rushing TDs on QB draws. Mark it down.

But seriously, I have no idea what will happen in this game. We have no idea how good Oklahoma really is due to their schedule so far, and we know how good ND can possibly be...

I think this game is decided by a single point, just not sure who has that point in the end.

I like how you put that. If I were a neutral observer, I think I'd take OU. But I'm not a neutral observer, and as an ND fan, I feel pretty good about our chances. If the guys come out ready to play and execute to the best of their ability, I think we'll win. We beat this team physically last year and we can do it again. A couple miscues by Bell and we'll be in good shape.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Mandel just looked at our weak rushing stats, as if that tells the whole story. He's not totally wrong -- it's true that our run blocking has been weak this year -- but the low stats are at least partially due to the fact that we are throwing more and rushing less because opposing defenses have been daring us to do that because they don't think Tommy can beat them.

Would love to see a 28-10 win but I doubt it will be like that. I haven't been impressed in either game yet this season. Going to be a tough win t home.

I have to attend a family reunion tomorrow, watching the game on a tiny tv....guess who is getting black out drunk tomorrow????

Pls don't revoke my fan card, but I was offered tickets to the game today and declined. Just wish the notice was more advanced.

OU sucks. We will win.

I've been on vaca and have missed a whole week of IE. Go Irish.

We've been anxiously awaiting your return.

Hopefully we've seen 4 games in which the squad is playing to the level of the competition. Humongous game. Bend is gotta be jumping for this one. Let's go get this one.

I figure this is the game day thread so I'll ask this question here. Back in probably the early 90s during a game we had a receiver take a hit as he was headed for the endzone that I believe left the defender on the ground and the receiver woozy. He stumble into the endzone while looking knocked out and scored. Can anyone tell me if this happened. What year. And what geme. It was during my childhood, and is my first vivid memory of watching ND. I know we have some not as young guys on here, and many with a fountain of memories of ND.

*for all I know this may have never happened and it was some weird dream years ago. figured it's worth a shot*

Are you thinking of the Reggie Brooks TD run against Michigan in 1992?

Good question. lol. I will look up footage and see. I'm just looking for suggestion possibilities. I woulda been 12 then. I grew up in the country and there wasn't cable there. I remember sitting in my room on Saturdays watching ND football on my TV. What I described is the earliest vivid memory I have. I'm trying to pinpoint it as to rewatch it if I find footage, and as to when it was.

EDIT: Watched the YouTube video, I don't think thats it. There was more of a distance stumbled with nobody else around.

I'd like to see the Irish at least attempt some short, underneath throws. Get Niklas in some jump ball match-ups with OU's linebackers. Rees doesn't have to bomb it down field if the Sooners crowd the box; just get it a little behind them. ND doesn't have to play for all the money on every pass play; take some short, quick shots and try to pick up some small chunks.
