I'm curious what that opinion is based on. How could we know whether he has the instincts to play ILB until we see him try? Not arguing ... just curious what you mean.

There are a few qualities that make the position unique. First, their ability to scan the offense pre-snap to pick up a tendency is usually great. Other positions should be able to do it but not as proficiently as the mike. Next, their ability to focus solely on the guards' feet (usually their key) for a brief moment, assess what the hell is going and react within seconds is extremely difficult. It's what I consider to be the innate instinct. Think about the amount of beef in front of you, the amount of speed behind you, the amount of force coming at you and all you can do is look at a foot to make the play - either you can do it or you can't. Engaging blockers in a tight space, shedding the block and making the tackle is another difficult task. I believe this aspect can be taught but it does require some instinct too.

Outside linebackers, on the other hand, act more than they react. Sure, sometimes they read keys but not as frequently as an inside linebacker, and they certainly have more space to do it. Usually, they work with one arm free, even when they are reading tackles or tight ends. An athlete can do this without having the natural instincts of an inside linebacker. They aren't engaging with blockers in tight spaces as frequently either. Most of the time, they are unblocked on the backside.

Councell seems to be more comfortable acting as opposed to reacting. He plays with more confidence when he is using his athleticism to get up field and make plays. He's not as confident when he has to shed a block to make a play. I like his size, but I'm not sure it's ideal for a mike. Most are more compact, play with a low center of gravity and are very powerful through their legs, hips and a$$. Councell has a different body composition. He's a long, lean athlete. He would probably have some trouble working in tight spaces and he would have a ton of trouble shedding big bodied guards who get low when they block. The only mike that comes to mind with a similar body and game is Urlacher. Not a bad comparison.

Good analysis. Urlacher played mostly "lobo backer" which is like a cross between a backer and a safety his last couple years in college. He was drafted to be the next great Bear linebacker and he was, but his Mike backer skills were as much learned as they were instinctual. At first he played too tall, but over time was honed into the wrecking ball that he became by a former ND grad and coach who was the DC in Chicago at the time.

Based off some of his comments, some of the other Boilermaker commits comments and some local buzz, I think Drue is going to stick with Purdue. I do not have any hard information, just speculation.

I think Drue was mainly watching to see how Purdue would compete tonight. And they certainly did that. If they would've rolled over tonight, it could've been a red flag. I'm not giving up hope yet but I certainly don't think it's a given that just because we offered that he's going to choose ND.

Not saying he ins't worth it but we need to go after some more talented young men.

Could use his athleticism at the linebacker spots though...got to get the kids in states, because it's hard to get kids from out of state to come to Indiana.

BTW ND's performance tonight is not what would have cost them Drue...offering him after he had been waiting for an offer and then committed to Purdue is what cost ND Drue.

Said last night was unreal and his best visit yet with great people.

Definitely sounds like he will be sticking right now. Need a good atmosphere and game against MSU to get momentum back.

^This. We have been recruiting for this profile at ILB and if defenses were lining up at running up the middle we'd be ok. However, they're are not and when they throw these screens to the flat we need guys that can quickly track the ball and make the tackle. I really hope that the staff starts to look for smaller faster ILb's that we can at least play against teams that are going to do this.

What we need is a four, five star ILB. Tranquill is an experiment and the result of miss players like Garrett, Mcmillan, Young, Mouhon. The ILB position is weak and we need a stud like Manti was in 2009. Seriously, this guy is not even an ILB, is like if you put Harrison Smith, Zeke Motta or Nicky Baratti at the ILB. Maybe he is a very good player but would be disappointing if he is the answer for this problem. I do not know if Morgan is a stud or not, but he is a truly ILB.

Wut.

Plenty of safeties get moved to LB. It happens everywhere.

Look up Brian Urlacher when you have the time.

Is he not smart to figure out that the atmosphere was like that mainly because ND was in town?

I was at the game at it was about 60 - 40 Purdue fans. Strong ND presence. My son said on TV it sounded like a pro ND crowd.

Met an old friend for dinner last night who's stepson is really good friends with Drue......he told me he is very much up in the air right now.......could go either way!!

My friend went on to tell me that Drue is a great kid, and it surprised him that he's going the football route in college, because he plays on his stepson's traveling baseball team, and he said he's really a special talent on the diamond.....

Thanks for the info OCIrish, I for one am all for Drue signing with ND. Need some more ILB and we are not in the running for any others it seems at the moment. The kid seems like a good kid and his athleticism is through the roof. I say take him and make him an ILB.
