I wouldn't call that decision by the NCAA rational. You do something for free to raise money for a charity and get suspended? Seems to me the NCAA hasn't been rational for a long time.

Maybe consistent would have been a better word. It was against the rules and Alford knew it when he did it. Yeah... agree it was a stupid rule but the NCAA and their thought process back then was way better than the leadership they have in place today.

Actually Alford didn't know it was against the rules since he wasn't profiting from it.

And 25 years later neither did Cam Newton. wink wink

Two totally different scenarios. Alford was just one of twelve selected individuals asked to be on a specific month. I'm to lazy to do additional research on this, but it was a legitimate fund raising activity, unlike Cam and his daddy.

I'm guessing the picture is this one from imdb and they won't allow him to hotlink:

veruca_salt.jpg

If not, it's probably something similar to this:
VerucaSalt.Impatience.jpg

If it was the 2005 adaptation...screw that.

Will there be an Johnny Manziel autographs?

You can get one if you test drive a new car...

@Gil_Brandt: Just heard on radio a Dallas-area Dodge dealership giving away Johnny Manziel autographs w/ each test drive. Can't make that up.

But some in the media still seem to insist on making this guy out to be a victim.... these types also were the same who were grabbing pitch-forks over Manti... just saying.

One is a cause for people who think these NCAA rules are ridiculous. Some people are presenting some very valid points.

The other was an incredibly embarrassing personal lie. It was kind of hard to defend Manti and the two are apples and oranges.

Actually, what you are saying IS that they are apples and oranges, because the comparison is not the same, ergo apples vs oranges, instead of apple to apples.

But I do agree that the two situations are very different, but lying about a fake girlfriend is not against NCAA rules, so there again the comparison would not work.

One was illegal and yet he is the victim, whereas one was not illegal and he was considered a conspirator and had to have his "credibility" checked on by NFL teams??

Pardon me as I go puke about the blatant hypocrisy in the NCAA and NFL over "off the field issues" being an umbrella term for these two totally different acts.

As much as I can't stand Manziel, it bothers me that I haven't seen any new news on this recently.

I think this story goes nowhere as long as the autograph guys keep their mouth shut. It gets interesting if he signed them so that his personal assistant could collect.

I personally like this story being over because it was turning ESPN into TMZ.

"While I did confirm that it was a personal view, my motivation was based on the fact we have had ongoing and productive dialogue with the NCAA during their investigation, as required," Sharp wrote. "However, some members of the media have chosen to declare #2 guilty with no evidence whatsoever.

"Darren Rovell of ESPN, who broke this story, has been duped before. During his report on Johnny Manziel, he cites unnamed sources who refuse to provide an interview or any tangible proof. In fact, his 'named source,' Drew Tieman (initially referred to as the broker), was reportedly booked twice for possession of marijuana and placed on four years probation. He [Tieman] has taken down his Facebook page, changed his telephone number and is refusing attempts to be interviewed by the NCAA. It is surprising that the nation's largest sports channel would support publication with this lack of corroboration."

A check of Facebook on Thursday shows Tieman's account is active.

So the guy is throwing out false facts, in a statement complaining about ESPN publishing false(in his opinion) facts?

Nice..........

The A&M chancellor is a flaming lunatic. His comments last week and his comments yesterday were unbelievable. Sounds like something straight out of the good ole days of the Southwest Conference. Can't believe the national media is not crawling all over him.

He's part of the SEC now. He's untouchable!

If the allegations had no merit, Manziel would've immediately said "I didn't do anything and all allegations are false."

Instead he hid from the press, hired a lawyer, etc. The end. He did it... but it's doubtful anything will come of it, because it's not what you know, it's what you can prove.

Unless they finally put the reigns on him. Notice that twitter account?

Rumour is they asked him if he did it. Broke for lunch, asked again until dinner, had a nice dinner and said "Welp nothing to see here" and headed out.

Heard on the radio, that nothing will probably come from this because they can't find the money or a paper trail that shows he was paid. Chancellor feels pretty smug and is not going to take any action against JM. He will start this week unless the NCAA somehow surprises us.

Also mentioned that Ricky Seals Jones stated that he turned down $600,000 from a major football power to go to A&M. Does that mean A&M paid him more?

The Ricky Seals Jones thing I believe is written about in 'The System' book thats coming out.

As far as JF, there was someone on the DP show today that said his family has already hired an attorney and plan to sue the NCAA and T A&M if he isn't allowed to play. To me thats BS. Even if he didn't do it (I believe he did) playing college football should be a privilege and not a right.
