Wonder if Sumlin voted A&M #1 or if Urban voted OSU #1

I'm guessing they both voted for their teams. A&M received one 1st place vote. OSU received three. The rest (58) went to Alabama.

I think #11 is fair. We will move into the top 10 after week 1 since Georgia or Clemson will lose.

I doubt it. Notre Dame would move past OSU and Louisville, especially since we were in the NC last year.

If being in the NC would've helped us, I think it would've been here in the preseason poll. Not sure it helps us going forward, or, to the contrary, creates a "they had a chance and got blown out, give someone else a try" dynamic.

dumb question...but is the coaches poll used in calculating BCS ranking? Because if so, I could totally see hate coming from coaches our direction if we were undefeated with an Alabama, Louisville, and OSU also undefeated to make sure there is no rematch...

Yes, it counts for 1/3 of the BCS formula.

I think the coaches poll is used. Good point, too.

Stanford is laughably overrated. Hopefully they perform so our W looks better.

I think it's pretty fair ranking for us, especially with Golson being out. Just happy that Michigan is at 17, where they belong. They're getting too much hype for this season. You have to remember that Stanford is a much better team with Hogan at QB. They're a damn good team.

Regardless of the human dynamic, if ND were to manage another 12-0 regular season, I would hope that there would be a large enough computer bump to push ND over the top via strength of schedule.

UofL and OSU's schedules are laughable (though I think Cal springs the upset on OSU in their third game).

I see no reason why Stanford can't take the PAC 12 again this year. Hogan is a decent QB, and they'll be a handful again this year.

Louisville.... #9......seriously.... that makes me sick...

Their POS schedule alone should keep them out of the top 10... its a mockery...

Bosie State has had touhger schedules...

Louisville has the best QB in the country. They deserve their ranking even with the weak AAC schedule.

They'll probably drop a random game though. Who would have thought Baylor could knock off KSU last year?

Hope you're right about the W. Their schedule is a joke until November, and their O-line will be nasty. They could be undefeated or a one loss team (loss to Oregon) when ND heads west this year. Tuitt and Nix have to control the line to win. It'll be a battle.

We've got #4, #16, #17, and #24 this year. Not too bad really. All are winnable games.

We also have #28 (Michigan State), #32 (Arizona State) and #36 (BYU). That's seven teams in the top 36 with the possibility of those three creeping into the top 25 at some point. Louisville's best opponent right now is #40 (Ohio Univ).

I agree with your post above about Louisville though. They have the best QB in the country and curb stomped Florida in the Sugar Bowl. It will be interesting to see how their SOS effects their ranking at the end of the year.

Yeah it's not an easy schedule by any stretch of the imagination, but it is manageable for this team. Louisville's schedule is a joke but it will also kill their computer polls.

#11 sounds about right. I think Golson is good enough to have placed us in the #7 - #9 range. I also think Rees will surprise some although he does have solid career numbers.

I think 11 is just right for now. With Golson and more certainty at the QB position, I think we would have been around 5. But 11 is the perfect position to move up quickly in.

Yeah, most years I couldn't care less about pre season rankings aside from the fact they shouldn't have them at all...

#11 is a bad joke for an 12-1 team returning more talent than they lost. Our lines are proven commodities that should be enough alone to put us at about #5.

I do like the ranking for the ability to light a fire and make us more of an underdog than we should be.

If ND vs. Stanford turns out to be two undefeated teams, I have a hard time seeing how the winner is not in the BCS championship. Of course it won't hurt if we win with more skill and less luck.

I think your last sentence addresses the first... right or wrong, some/many do not think ND proved much of anything last year other than they got 'lucky' before getting stomped in the title game...

still more to prove.

I think we almost learned last season that it is always better to be ranked higher. The only reason KSU was ahead of us for most of the year was because of their higher preseason ranking.

This is true.. and OH how I lamented when they lost to Baylor... most were celebrating being 1 and told me to lighten up... yeah, REALLY wish KSU hadn't lost...

oh well.

I was in the same boat. It was kind of nice to be #1 for a few weeks, but I would have much rather had KSU in a bowl game, I think we would have done pretty well against them  I probably would have taken Oregon too considering how well Sanford was able to control them physically. When both lost in the same night...I was more disappointed than overjoyed.
