I think the PRO vs DUAL QB rankings are borderline racist. Scroll down the lists and you'll see the PRO QBs are basically white and the DUAL QBs are basically African-American with very few exceptions on either side. I'm happy to hear they are thinking about changing it. They may want to consider doing the same with APB vs RB. I do think there's some merit to the WDE vs SDE distinction though.

But they're all black anyways, so there's no racist tone there.

I mean, aren't black QBs typically faster and more mobile than the white ones?

Were these Dual threat kids born in Africa?

JC's explanation:

He's a tall player that will fill out his frame that has a big arm= pro-style quarterback.

We are thinking of doing away with Dual-Threat and Pro FWIW. Quarterback seems to be quarterback these days. I felt that switching Kizer was only fair because he has that type of potential in the passing game.

I really like that explanation.

One could make that stereotype and it's apparent the recruiting services do just that. Yet, there are many white QBs that are mobile and suited for either a pro or spread offense, but they get labeled as "Pro" style QBs. I think with the way most college offenses are going, the distinction is archaic and I'm happy to hear 247 is going to do away with it. This doesn't surprise me as they seem to be the most progressive of the recruiting services.

Does the term African-American apply to only those that were born in Africa? No need to respond...the answer is no.

Yes, there are white QBs that can run. But almost every black QB is mobile. The only ones I can think of that aren't are D McNabb (and he was pretty mobile), Byron Leftwich, and J. Russel. So well over half of the blacks are 'mobile', and much less than half of the white QBs are 'mobile.

It's a stereotype for the reason, and I don't think 247 is listing blacks as dual just because they're black. It's probably because they are in fact mobile.

I'm using NFL as an example because I don't know even a quarter of the NCAA QBs.

I agree with you. I think the 'borderline racism' is more on the other side - listing most white QBs as PRO because the stereotype is they are not mobile. Why are Jacob Park ('14) and Kevin Dillman ('15) listed as PRO QBs? I'm pretty sure Park is mobile and I know for a fact Dillman is a "dual threat". There are many other examples but I picked these two.

Bottom line - IMO, recruiting services have been borderline racist in their classification of QBs and I am happy 247 realizes there is no need for the distinction.

I agree with you on Park and Gillman.

All this is pretty funny when you have the perspective to see that the greatest single threat quarterback never made it on the field in the NFL, Chuck Ealy. Single threat you ask? He was a threat to score on every play. Made the Heisman list. Should have done better. But the NFL wouldn't have anything to do with a "dual threat" quarterback in the early '70's. We are still defined by our prejudices!

Yup, and Ealey still isn't in the college football hall of fame!

He came up to Canada (CFL) in 1972, won rookie of the year, and played a good 7 seasons in the cfl.

Found out that my Aunt's husband's brother played at Toledo and was drafted into the NFL just yesterday. He was a wide receiver and my first guess was that he was sort of a byproduct of Ealey, but after thinking about it last night, he probably isn't that old.

EDIT: Just did more research! Turns out, he DID play with Chuck Ealey! I was told he played wide receiver, but apparently he spent some time at DB. I guess he could really fly. The Herald-Dispatch.com - The 1970 Team Found this article with references to him, Steve Banks.

You are Steve Banks semi-relative? Get outa here. Seriously. That Rocket team had a bunch of guys that in those days were recruited to sit the bench at the big schools. The bigs either were not limited or had 120 scholarships, so they loaded the bench. Frank Lauterbur convinced these guys, like Chuck, Mel Long, Donny Fair, Joe Schwartz, (who could drink more beer than almost any Rocket I drank with up to Harvey Knuckles) to come to the MAC at Toledo, and b1tch-slap anyone they could get on the schedule. In those days the Rockets would have probably lost to the Buckeyes and the Wolverines, but would have probably been a third or fourth place B10 team. They would have done very well in the SEC of that day. So to get back to your uncle's bro by marriage, he was one of a bunch of guys that were good enough to get a go at the NFL in those days. Maybe not a first rounder, but a substantial number of Rocket filled the draft in those days.

That's kind of cool... Our Quarterbacks are getting trained by the best professionals in the game. Malik-Elite 11, Deshone-Elite 11/Whitfield, Golson-Plans with Whitfield. Not to mention Kelly is an absolute technician with the quarterback position. Once that position becomes a stable entity, our play is going to go from beating teams and 9-3/12-1 season to demolishing teams and actually showing up in the Ship! Great future ahead. Is it August 31st yet?
