I know the world has changed a lot, but overall I do catch myself telling my nieces and nephews they need to toughen up a bit. Thoughts?

The "younger workers" are just as soft and entitled as the baby boomers. You have an entire generation of kids raised on the idea of participation awards and taught they are all special and destined to be appointed head of UNICEF as soon as they graduate from college with their poetry degrees. This has all driven this prevalent idea today that there is some nobility or virtue in being average or being no better than anyone else that I find to be at the least very disappointing and at worst disturbing and a big factor in degrading the economic competitiveness of our country.

Regardless of the comparison between the baby boomers vs. Gen X or Y, there is almost no way that any generation can compare with the one that went through the Great Depression, World War II, and helped build the U.S. into the economic and world power it is today. Just a really incredible and resilient group of people and society our country was (and had to be) back then to meet those challenges head on and drive the country and the world forward.

I love how we're trying to assign the blame to one or the other. Every party is responsible in some way. Overall, I'm very disappointed with the direction of our society as a whole.

So back to the original topic and not the blame game of who is ruining what. Yes we are raising pussies. Soon everyone from the Greatest Generation will be gone. All shaking their heads on the way out because little Johnny didn't get his way in school and the parents assaulted the teacher.

Football should be a mandatory sport for everyone growing up. It teaches teamwork, comradery. It teaches if you put in the work, you will be rewarded. And sometimes even if you put in the work you still might lose and you need to get over it and go work harder.

I would settle for keeping score at all levels and only giving trophies to winners.

Now when the town employee puts a screen up in front of the pitching machine he feeds for 9-10 year olds, I have to say it makes the kids look less pussyish.

yes but a lot of it is due for fear of litigation....just 2 quick examples

starts flurrying outside---school lets out...why because they are afraid if someone gets in an accident the school will be sued

football players---when i played we practiced in the summer, running countless amount of wind sprints, drills etc....got maybe 1 or 2 drink breaks....now they have drink breaks like every 15 minutes...due to someone dying of heat exhaustion

I complete agree with the sentiment that all parties are responsible one way or another (and are being sissies). I was not implying or trying to say otherwise.

Get educated, working and saving and you will be free of getting screwed by anybody.

Keep looking for somebody to blame, and you're sure to fail.

Yes, the current generation are a bunch of sissies. But to be fair, this is a completely different world we live in now.

1:00 to 1:05 sums it all up for me, too many people are so scared shitless over hurt feelings or the occasional failure that we are teaching a generation that failure always involves victimization... That's a problem.

My biggest problem nowadays is nobody experiences things firsthand anymore. This "hipster" mentality of being an expert on everything just because you read a book in college or surfed the internet one day annoys me.

Examples:

Military experts who have never served a day
Teaching/Education experts who have never spent a day in a classroom
Sports experts who have never stepped on a field
Poker experts who have never sat down at a real table staring at real people
Economic experts who have never owned a house, had a family, etc.

The list goes on......

As a former Sergeant in the army.. The "younger" soldiers have some entitlement issues or something. Just the whole toughness mentality has changed quite a bit since I enlisted in 2002.

On the other hand, there is an amazing amount of DIY information on the internet. I am in the music business and I can build anything from acoustic bass traps to hardware electronic compressors and equalizers. I always could do this, but there is much more and extensive information today.

You actually built them though, which is really cool. My point was a lot people would just read a DIY manual, and then pretend they know more than everyone else about it (including people who have actually done it) without even putting those skills to the test.

*There are so variables when dealing with things in a real life situation, you have to apply the skills learned before you know how it actually is/works. It would be like reading a DIY manual on how to be a cage fighter and then entering a tournament without ever throwing a punch before.

The tide really started to change when parents took on the mentality of "what are YOU going to do to help my kid" instead of "what can I do to help my kid" at teacher conferences, doctors appointments, sports practices, etc.

There are weak people in every generation. There are certainly plenty in this generation. At the same time, people sitting around bitching about it, reminiscing about how tough they used to be and prescribing their solution for fixing the "problem" is as pathetic as anything else.

The "everybody gets a trophy" is a well-meaning but ultimately misguided philosophy, but it isn't nearly as prevalent as some make it sound. A lot of what people identify as evidence of pussification or political correctness is really just the evolution of culture and the growing enlightenment of the people. Complaining about how terrible young people are is the first sign that the world has passed you by.

There is a distinct double-standard:

We complain that kids spend too much time on the internet and playing video games, and look at our post counts and all the video game threads.

We complain that kids are entitled, and then look at how quick threads go south here when a player decommits/transfers or another program does something we deem "cheating" without any evidence to back it up.

Truth is important in all aspects of life and all too often people are afraid to tell the truth. Then people become jaded when they realize the world isn't what they thought it was.

why do the people who raised these kids (or for the older crowd, raised the parents of these kids) blame the kids for how they turned out?

Won't get in a word twisting contest, but I would not use the word enlightened to describe the latest generation. The country is soft, entitled, and losing freedoms everyday. If that means the world has passed me by, I'm giving it a kind wave! What made this country great for so many years was a tireless work effort, personal accountability, and community. Those three things are on the decline. If calling that out as a problem if considered bitching, I guess I'm guilty.

In a word... Yes.

I would like to see a mandatory 3 year stint in the military for all graduating seniors coming out of highschool. They would get the same benefits (medical, dental, and tuition assistance, etc.) as people who joined voluntarily. There's other countries that have this, and I believe they're better off for it.
