Now a 4 :s: and #3 DUAL QB on 247. Killed it at the Elite 11 this past weekend.

Happy for the kid... No really.

The staff assessed him and decided not to offer, even though he was begging for one. No reason to get heartburn over this. We're in good shape with better prospects, and if worse comes to worse, we can always try to swoop in later.

LOL @ the filtered Instagram picture used for his recruiting profile photo. Throw some sepia on that.

Last elite 11 invitee.

God dammit, Whiskey.

I'll stand by it (though I'm getting a little nervous). Still in good shape with better prospects: Kizer (4:s:, 0.9031, 4th DTQB, elite offer list) v. Mahalak (3:s:, 0.8866, 9th DTQB, weak offer list).

Our staff clearly made a conscious decision to pass on him. That, combined with his weak offer list, still gives me confidence that we won't regret passing on Mahalak.

He ain't going to be a coach there long.

he is in over his head...as you can already see...they had all their eggs in the basket w/ marcus...he's gone and now......the actually coaching aspect is needed and sounds like he is learning on the fly...not good for a top tier program

To me, Oregon is like a lot of programs. They're not a blue blood with a storied history. They get a stretch where they are good for 5-7 years and can play with the big boys, then they start to fall back to where their program has always been. In this case, CK was what brought them up for that stretch. Bellotti got a lot of praise, but if you look at his record he had a few good 10-2 seasons, but most of the time they hovered around 5-8 wins a year.

sounds like he is saying that kid didnt work very hard during his RS year. Not sure how that's on the coach.

Now do I think Helfrich has his own issues, absolutely.

Which was world beating for Oregon back then, they were one of the worst power five programs when he took over.

Now? I don't expect them to stay down too for long, too much money behind the program currently.

Phil isn't going to stand for Oregon slipping back to an also ran. It might happen but he is going to demand changes if Helfrich can't keep them at 10+ wins and in the PAC-12 championship game more often than not.

The coach said, in the article, that this is the staff's fault as far as Mahalak's development is concerned --- he was one of a few players per year who fall through the cracks. He blamed himself and "human nature" on his part. There's nothing in the words of that article which is accusatory of the kid.

Lot of money, but if you don't have the right guy at the helm it doesn't make a lot of difference. There are a number of schools with money and great facilities, but they rarely contend for the top ten let alone the NC. The top kids want to play for a team that has a legitimate shot.

Agreed. My point is with their money they'll most likely get another top coach soon enough..

Like Texas? lol

Yes, like Texas. You think Texas won't ever have an elite program again? CFB ebbs and flows... but only the elite programs can be counted on to eventually win big again at some point. My point is Oregon isn't the program we grew up with anymore, they're in that group now (Mainly bc of the Nike money).

The problem is, regardless of money, who do you find as a top tier coach. I am sure Urbz, Saban and Harbaugh aren't going there. RichRod would be intriguing.

Timing obviously plays a part in the short term...
