Is the "most likely" part because of getting drafted for baseball or for some other reason?

Drafted by Tigers in 36th round. Honestly, it would be pretty foolish of him to go the baseball route over football. Unless he doesn't want to redshirt

Wouldn't the signing bonus for a 36-rounder be like $15,000? I doubt he's going to bite on a baseball offer at this time.

Got drafted by the Tigers in the 36th rd of mlb draft. Coincidentally who his dad plays for..

It is quite common for the Tigers to use a late round draft pick to show some love to a relative of someone in their organization. Justin Verlander's brother, Ben Verlander, was drafted in the 42nd round, I think, sometime in the last couple of years. He went on to play baseball at Old Dominion and was eligible to be re-drafted this year. I'm not sure where he went in the draft. Torii Hunter, Jr.'s draft position looks like another example of the class shown by the Tiger organization. I see no reason why he wouldn't report to Notre Dame as expected unless his injury prevents him from reporting on time.

Would defeat the purpose of his dad going to the Detroit as well... If his son was gonna play baseball he would have been better off staying with the Angels.

He doesn't seem to understand much of what this means yet. He told a kid on Instagram who asked if he was still going to ND that he "didn't know." I am sure once he talks to his dad and Sr. explains to him that he would basically be starting below single A and it was more or less done out of gratitude that he will realize his career is in football.

Serious?

I could see maybe if he was taken in the 35th Round

Don't you think his dad would have talked to him about all this by now? This would suck if we lose him.

Isn't losing someone to the 36th round kinda like losing someone because they won a free bottle of coke from a bottle cap?

I wonder if the leg injury has given him pause about his football future and longevity? Still, 36th round is not exactly a vote for future stardom.

Torii Jr.'s Twitter: That's a pretty good birthday present I guess. Getting drafted and all haha:) it's definitely a blessing, all honor to the man upstairs.!

So his dad's room is upstairs?

Eh 36th round won't really lead to a big signing bonus or anything. Taking him there is kind of a favor to the family.

Kinda what I thought. Didn't think for a second he wasn't reporting to ND. Because we all know that due to recent events the last thing we need is more drama, and/or panic situations. But I haven't read anything from Torii about it...

For reference, "The Arizona Diamondbacks have used a 34th-round draft pick on Arizona State outfielder Cory Hahn, who was paralyzed during a game in 2011.", per ESPN.

Torii's on the right path.

So a paralyzed kid (God bless him) was drafted before Torii? He can't be that good then.

Why the hell does baseball even bother with all those rounds then? If they're just using them to draft legacies and paralyzed kids, why go through with the charade? Or why stop there and just make it like 2,894 rounds and draft every kid who has cancer or some other obstacle in life?

A 62 round draft-- reason number 113 why MLB sucks.

Not every pick is ceremonial. Having so many rounds does allow you to make some picks for other reasons, but they are also trying to find kids late in the draft. Obviously more players selected early ultimately make it, but baseball is the hardest sport to project and a lot of guys that get drafted choose not to sign and attend college. So it does make some sense to have a lot of picks and increase your odds of hitting on something.

In the MLB they draft for 8 teams at a time. They don't just draft for the "Detroit Tigers" but also for their 8 farm teams. So the prospects can try to work their way up to the MLB. It's not all ceremonial but at some point one pick here or there can go for a show of appreciation.
