People were excited about Redfield. Then someone said something about Bryant and EV and how awesome it is to get guys like that. So I said don't forget about how awesome Elmer is because for me he is right up there in that category

Back to Redfield, with all the butthurtidity about no connection with Peppers, why hasn't anyone mentioned this guy? Anybody deny he has as high of a football ceiling, or higher? How many more safties do we need? I would take a Redfield in hand for a Peppers on the trail, any day!

Not saying Redfield doesn't have a chance to be a better player, but from what I've seen of both, if I it was a totally blind selection based on rankings/video/measurables I'd take Peppers.

However, since Redfield picked ND and Peppers didn't I'd obviously rather keep Redfield.

That, my man, is exactly what I said. Just with a little more pinache, LOL!

And of course the other thing, personality wise (speaking of success at ND and in Kelly's system) Redfield is a 12 on a scale of 10, and Peppers [and please no haters do no conflation heera!] may be a 7 or an 8.

Last year's class was ridiculous, I mean stacked with so much talent and such high character guys. I must admit that Mr Redfield, with his athletic ability, maturity, and just Notre Dame-ness, is like that huge cherry on top, when I think of the class.

I feel ya bro, but Elmer was our first commit. I would have been shocked if he didn't sign with us. Max, Eddie and Greg are guys I would never have guessed we would have pulled.

He will start on special teams from day one. Does that count as the "starting job?" I think Farley has way too much of an advantage at this time for him to lose the starting role. Much like DOG with Spond and Jaylon.

He may get some time at nickel, if Shummate starts. That said it seems Baratti has the leg up on Shummate to start at the other safety position opposite of Farley. So that means Shummate stays at nickel.

I think Shumate will start at SS and Collinsworth will play nickle. I do agree though that Max could see time there.

I might be alone here but I'm not sold on Baratti in a starting role. At safety you need to be a combination of cover skills, ability to close quickly, and be a tremendous hitter. I just haven't seen Baratti exhibit any of these. He did intercept that wounded duck half-back option pass last year which was good. I think it's Shumate that starts, Max plays nickel, and then Baratti.

I hear ya...This is his time and I hope that he is all that. I really couldn't determine much watching the Spring game. We'll see.

by all accounts he is fast and athletic...he played qb in high school (texas) among other positions...unfortunately he is in a mix w/ prob one of the most athletic defenders we have ever had coming out of high school in redfield....mixed in w/ physically imposing shumate who has a leg up in competition as he got some reps last year and then farley who started...mixed in w/ a veteran collinsworth so he has to earn every rep

I'm not going to pretend that I have a clue who is going to start at safety but has far as Baratti is concerned the kid is fast as lightning. I'm remember a post that I believe Whisky posted about his 40 time. It was laser fast.

This just may be me being ignorant about COllins worth(which is likely the case), but other than class, how is he a" veteran?" Do we expect Collinsworth to see the field? I have heard nothing of him.

Laser-timed 4.45. I can't find the video of it anymore, but the result is still recorded on his SpeedRank profile. Harrison Smith-like athleticism.

Well, first of all, in 2010 and 2011 Collinsworth was an important special teams player. Then, after spring practice in 2012, the coaches were saying that he was the clear third safety behind Slaughter and Motta and that he would get significant playing time (i.e. he was ahead of Farley) ... of course, he got hurt, so that playing time never materialized. This spring, he and Eilar Hardy were consistent second-stringers behind Shumate and Farley (but bear in mind that Baratti was recovering from surgery).

What's the upshot? I think everyone expects Collinsworth to play in 2013; it's just a matter of what his role will be. He could be a member of the rotation at safety; he could be the standard nickel, as Shumate was in 2012; he could be a special teams maven.

I listened to the rare comments by the staff on Baratti pretty carefully; they seem to think that he's plenty good on coverage, smart as he!l, hits like a train [he was being looked at as a DOG linebacker for a while], and VERY athletic.

So until I get different facts, I'll say that anyone who can beat Nicky Baratti out of a job is REALLY good. Having said that, I believe that Collingsworth is really good, and that Shumate COULD be if he can figure out the position, which Diaco said he was "light years" from doing.

My view is apparently unpopular [as I tend to want the best system-functioning player on the field instead of the guy with the fanciest eye-test], but I think that SuperMax will face potentially stronger competition from Collingsworth and Baratti to start alongside Farley [who I think is a given] than from Shumate in 2013.

If Matthias himself does not have the DB-quarterback job [that Zeke and Harrison before him had] downpat yet, then the other safety will have to do it. That also would favor a veteran who is not light years away from figuring it out.
