My, you have such a way with words, Doc.

They veritably roll off your tongue.

Wait till I tell you what he's going to do to ann arbor.

good article. Also addresses the Lynch situation. Good to hear Aaron actually told the team why he was leaving.

Jones Gets Final Look

The news of defensive end Aaron Lynch’s transfer hit the day Jones arrived and he was surprised.

“I thought he was a good guy and I had a good relationship with him, but like how Notre Dame says, it’s the next man in,” said Jones. “People were not glad he left, but when Coach said, ‘Next man in. We’re all good.’ People were ok. I don’t want to say they were going to forget him, but they were pretty much like, ‘We’re moving on.’”

Moving on, but not moving away, according to Jones.

“I know everyone is still close with him and he’s staying for the semester,” he said. “Nobody dislikes him for it. Everyone that knew him, understood where he was coming from. He did come in the locker room and talk to some of the team.”

The kid seems like he's ready for college.

Hopefully we can RS him this year and the coaching staff can figure out where he is going to be playing and at what weight.

Freebie from Inside the Irish. This kid is going to be dominant.

A good enough athlete to be one of the better basketball players in upstate New York, Jones will bring his 6-foot-6, 300-pound frame to the Irish defensive line, where he’ll at the very least give Stephon Tuitt a run for most imposing-looking guy getting off the bus.

Our two-deep D-Line for this year is very good: KLM + Nix + Tuitt; and Hounshell + Schwenke + Day. That IS however where it stands, if one doesn't count Okwara and Jones [I am assuming that Springmann can do fine at NT if asked].

With that group we will get pressure two main ways: 1). extreme power all the way to the QB from Tuitt and Day; and 2). QB obliteration from Shembo, now finally at his perfect spot [hopefully Ishaq will be watching closely and motivated to attack like the Prince.]

The interesting point comes if Diaco wants to line up much in 4-3 true D-linemen array [ i.e. not just asking Shembo or Williams to walk up and put their hand down]. If we need some four linemen arrays, then at least one of Jones or Okwara needs to be available. My guess would be Jones, since Okwara's still growing as we speak. That sort of alignment is also the moment when Tuitt might slide inside next to Big Lou, and open a slot for Hounshell [who is darn good; lets not overlook him] or Jarron to get some DE reps on the 4-3.

It is my belief that except for short yardage plays, we'll do less four D-linemen this year than past, as both Shembo and Williams can "simulate" D-lineman power and aggression at an instant notice. I'd also therefore look for us to REALLY emphasize linebacker speed in the other three LB spots now that one linebacker will be more and more like a hybrid lineman. AND this is why I don't think that Carlo will be on the field as much as Fox or some other fella named Slaughter [when we go "hybrid" Diaco took the Will out a bunch last year. This year with Councell I expect to see Dog-Mike-Hybrid, plus Catcrasher more.].

But I'm not in Coach Bob's mind, for which I'm sure he is eternally grateful, so all I can really say, as we do in West Virginia: "He smarter than I are"... and leave it at that.

No offense Philly, but I will stick with BK and Co. assessment of position they recruited him to play ;) With this yrs incoming class I'm fine with our oline commits .

OK. That's why it's my opinion. I'm not the only one who feels this way either.

Just to salve whatever troubled waters there may be here over Jarron's playing position at ND: it is certainly true as Philly says that many analysts have felt that he would make an NFL-quality O-Lineman. There is, however no reason to believe that once powered up, he will not make an NFL-Quality D-lineman. Some also believe that, just because of his load of athletic talent. If he lacks enough "attitude", well, you have to be able to get a ferocious mean on whether you're elite O or D.

None of that is exactly the point here, however. The point is where do we most need him. Jarron's size would make him an OT probably. We have Martin, Lombard, Nichols, and Prestwood slotted in there, which is an absolute motherload of talent, and with Ronnie Stanley coming, and the "Fab Five Fingers of Doom" next year, we're pretty good. D-Line is a little thinner. That would be almost disastrously true if Big Lou and Stephon got early ambitions. AND D-Linemen, as we know are really the jewels [big ugly jewels] that every team fights over. If Jarron goes offense, my crystal ball [already defective] will hit the dumpster.

Yeah...tons of people like Jaron better at OL...just no one with any say in the situation...You never know though...this staff isn't afraid to change a player's position.
Kid is going to dominate regardless of where he plays.

Me! Meeeee!

When I entered as a freshman I had a leaning toward something in the (mechanical) visual arts. Photography, film or video production. Come sophomore year, when I was to declare a major, I was told that Communications Arts was no being offered as a degree course of studies.

I was shuttled into American Studies as a major.

Why? Because a decision was made to eliminate the Communications Arts department while beefing up the new (and up-and-coming) American Studies department. If I wanted to take film, video or photography classes that counted toward my degree I had to declare a major that I hadn't even considered.

Today, ND has a reasonably good film and video program. They hit me up occasionally for donations. To their pleas I say "Eff You!" They listed a major I was interested in but trashed it just as I attempted to declare it as my major. They have since revived it. Yet they want my monetary support for the program? No way, no how.

I have mixed feelings about my four years at ND. Some are sour, some are bitter. For the most part, though, the majority are warm and positive. This has to do with my interaction with professors and instructors and with the many friends I made there.

I was unable to make it to the 2012 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival this year due to health concerns. Many of my classmates meet there yearly. Fortunately I was able to make it for our collective 50th birthday 10 years ago . The keepsake (aside from the memories) was an ND cap with "5-0 in N-0" embroidered on the back.

I just received my "6-0 in NO" cap the other day even though I wasn't able to be there. There ARE things (some connected to ND) that supersede the Irish football records.

Pardon the interruption. Regular programming will be restored momentarily.

I hear this, but its basically a truism. D-line takes more athleticism than o-line. But O-line generally takes a little more length. So if you are athletic enough to play D-Line, but big enough to play O-Line, you will almost always project better as an o-lineman since your athleticism will be rarer compared to o-linemen while your extra length does not get you any consideration compared to d-linemen (and may even hurt you).

For example, Tuitt probably projects incredibly well as a LT, but he is a stud on the D-line.

Personally, I would not be surprised if Jones tore it up or turned out way over-rated. I don't have a good feel for him. But, I don't think saying he projects better as an O-linemen is offering any special insight, unless you mean he is not really athletic enough to play d-line.

^Heggie, comes to mind ;)

Different position or moved substantially:
Nilkas, Jackson, McDaniels, Riddick, half the offensive linemen, Currico, Collinsworth, Rasaba, Utopo, Springman, Smith(H), Shembo, Schwenke, Massa, Farley, Goodman, and Eifert.

I still see mean jarron jones as tuitts understudy. When tuitt leaves we insert jones and don't miss a beat. Another year or two we will no longer have to rebuild, we will reload! Shumate for slaughter will be the first example of this in 13'. Jmho...

Saw this too... didn't want to bring it in here and start all the doubting. Just interesting and I'm sure there are many recruits that would commit to different places if they lived elsewhere. If Kiel lived in the Bayou he'd be at LSU right now.
