I don't know, anything is possible. If people are up for it I'm sure we could make it happen somehow. What do you think?

Maybe we could do one. Maybe a pre-season preview or something. I dunno. I defer to Whisky as our podcast expert.

I'm just being Negative Nancy. I'd be down, but I'd probably need to buy a new mic/headset or something.

I don't know about the once-a-week podcast. That's asking a lot as far as time and ideas go. Monthly would be a better possibility, but I agree with Lax that we could do one, see how it goes, and take it from there.

We would get to see how much you guys own me on team knowledge though.

EDIT: It also depends on what everyone else on the site thinks.

Three things are essential for a quality podcast:

1. Quality equipment. This cannot be stressed enough. If you have a ****** sound, no one will want to listen. I'm not saying the best equipment, just stuff that will get good sound.

2. A consistent host. Can't be a different host every week.

3. A host and a producer/engineer/sound guy (or whatever) that has time. It's not like you can just wake out of bed and do a podcast. You have to find guests (it is EXTREMELY difficult to carry a podcast on your own for any length of time), coordinate a good time with those guests, discuss topics, etc.

I'd be down to help in any way possible, especially during the summer. (You ever want to do a USC preview...I'm your man.)

Good luck to whoever wants to spearhead this...

Are you going to join in, as Lax suggested?? :)

Equal time for cats please. I don't own one, but in the interest of equality it's only right.

We're in big trouble if I'm the resident expert. But here's what I know of how Eric produces OFD's podcast:
  • Distribute an outline of discussion topics for the episode ahead of time;
  • Invite guests to a Google Hangout;
  • Upload audio from Google Hangout to a YouTube channel;
  • Clean-up/ edit sound in post-production (no idea how this is done);
  • Post finished product for general consumption.

I think we could pull that off, particularly if they aren't too frequent; monthly or quarterly should ensure there are plenty of new things to discuss.

How was the sound quality on the OFD podcast? I was just using a basic blue-tooth headset.

Technical podcast tips if you're serious:

1. Get a sound platform to web host your podcast. A free site is probably not going to be able to provide you with enough bandwith in the event that your podcast is listened to by a lot of people. It might not be a huge issue if you're taping once a month, but these audio files are rather large and most free sites aren't going to give you enough data transfer for hundreds of people to download and listen. We got hooked up with SoundCloud (which I don't think is 100% open to the public, there's a waiting list of sorts right now) and I think it's something like $150-$200 a year for their service.

2. There are all different kinds of ways to create a good audio sound. Buying an expensive microphone, a preamp, and a mixing board would be the extreme way to go and you'd be looking at $300 right there. I really wouldn't recommend someone get all that UNLESS you have one person who is super serious about being a host. I have a $40 dynamic microphone which works fine (don't get a condenser microphone) and an average priced headset will get the job done as well. At any event, a audio editor can clean up your sound for free too.

3. The whole process may sound complicated but it's really not. We tape our convo's using Google+ On Air Hangouts which is taped directly to a YouTube account. That YouTube audio is downloaded as a mp4 file, and using Zamzar it's downloaded as a mp3 file. That file is uploaded to Audacity where it's really easy to add in music and/or cut out unwanted audio---like if your podcast gets interrupted in the middle, for example. That file is then saved as a mp3 again and uploaded to our SoundCloud account. As our web host it allows us to embed the podcast on our site and using Google Feedburner the podcast is automatically uploaded to iTunes the same time it gets uploaded to SoundCloud.

Hope that helps if you were thinking about the whole process.

It was our pleasure to have Whiskeyjack on the podcast and he'll be on in the future too. Hope you enjoyed it.

We're in trouble if we have any experts residing on, and committing time to, college football message boards period...

You'll do just fine.

I'll contribute further irritating warnings about doing this plus one positive thing:

1). as LA said, the second most important thing is having a good technological system to broadcast the BS;
2). THE MOST important thing, though, is having a willing ADMINISTRATOR. This is the guy who rounds up all the lazy guys who are just going to "show up", gets the cat herd organized, ties up the practical loose ends, and allows something to happen more than once.

Now the positive thing: On such deals you don't really need to plan much about what you're going to say. General topic areas yes, details and strong agenda no. Whether anyone of you believes it or not [and I suspect that deep down ALL of you do], you know more about what's actually going on with Notre Dame football than any group that is not on the inside. IE studies and discusses ND football more in depth and more intelligently than anywhere.

The bottomline there is that people would tune in to listen because they'll hear things from you that they would not get elsewhere, and with saner comments about it. There have been oldtime radio shows called "brain trusts". These were just really smart guys sitting back and winging interesting discussions about their wheelhouse topics. VERY interesting.

Now, last downer: if you do this, you will enter into a whole new level of responsibility for your remarks. Like it or not, your commentary will begin to acquire more "weight" whether it deserves to or not. something to meditate about.

Haha...it would make for good radio for IE members, but everyone else would be lost as hell. Plus, I've pissed off enough people with my mouth on this site alone...no need to add to that total LOL....

Listened-you came across well WJ. Now I can put a voice with an Avatar/Screen name.

Podcasts, I'd be down with that-would be interesting to hear some free-flowing comments from some of the people on this board.

Thanks OFD-always have quality content.
