Summary of Sportscenter Interview

Kelly says he is impressed with the way EG handled the situation. Provost office will tell EG what he needs to do but will not speak with Kelly. As long as ND takes him back, EG will be accepted on the team.

Benefits of other QBs:
TR: experience
Hendrix: great athleticism

All have a legitimate chance and may have to use multiple QBs.

Has watched Alabama game and thinks we are really close to competing with them.

on the new edition of CFB, they had a little audio from BK (that I missed while switching to it on watch ESPN app) and both of the guys on there said it was good to see ND standing its ground and not giving in like other programs. Kevin Frazier said it was "refreshing" in this age of college athletics. Wish more people would take that stance and speak out about it.

It really is one of the main reasons you gotta love this team so deeply!! It's hard to think about what could have been this year with Golson in there, but I feel as tho this is a way to reverse the whole Manti saga with 1 act of integrity!

No matter what happens, I do not envy Kelly & staff with the position they are in now. VERY tough decisions going forward.

I don't know. Ara went 7-2-1 in 1965 with Bill Zloch, who had never played before, at QB and had nowhere near the talent of Rees and Hendrix, or game experience Rees has. Despite this, Ara's two losses were to the #1 and #6 ranked teams by a combined total of 13 points. He beat the the #4 ranked team by 21 points. He won with defense and ball control.

We have lots of talented athletes in every position group, and almost every player coming back from one of the nation's top defense. Rees and Hendrix know not to turn the ball over and not to take reckless risks. We have some very athletic skill position players in Daniels, Atkinson, Carlisle and Jones along with three starters coming back on the O-line and a bevy of talented tight ends. I don't see any team on the schedule that has any discernible advantage over us. We have a chance to win every regular season game, just as we did last year.

In fairness to all... what schedule did ND play in 65...

There's been a shitstorm of bad things happening at ND lately (and some good, obviously), and Brian Kelly has handled it like a grown *** man. He never flinches, and whether or not he stays and wins, loses, or leaves us for a NFL gig or somewhere else in college, I've gained so much respect for him as a man and a coach. We're damn lucky to have him as our coach. I'm not close to the situation, but just the way he presents himself, the team, the players, and the University, I don't want another coach in the country in our corner and that's including Saban. If we're lucky enough to hold on to him for 5 more years, ND is going to stay at the top.

It's not a question of their schedule; but it IS comparing apples and oranges. There was no 85 scholarship limit in '65, and ND was about the only team in the country that was on TV seemingly every weekend. Even the 5th stringers were probably All State high school players........ ND was completely, and totally unfairly(from our opponents' perspectives), stacked in those days.

Bama and USC were stacked with talent in the 60s too. Bama had some guy named Gump running the ball. Why does auto correct change Bama to Obama every time?

Killing time at the airport so I figured I would chime in a bit...

I just finished reading, "Ressurection." It is an account of the years leading up to the hiring of Ara, back stories on many of the key players of the '64 team and the first season of Ara's tenure. It was a nice read; especially, the background information on the players..

anywhooooooooooo....

One of the accounts that is very relateable to Everett's situation is the account of Tom Carey (please, Baby Jesus, let it be the correct player. Excuse my error if wrong, they moved my flight in Holland up to 0915, so this morning isn't that pleasant)...

Tom went home without permission one Friday to watch his HS team, Mt. Carmel, play in the city finals for basketball. At that time, students were only permitted to leave for home on Saturdays and must have had a Priest's written permission. He was, susequently, caught and was dismissed from the school. A priest, back in Chicago, went to bat for him and got him back in the University, but he had to sit out a football season.

He did so, all the while, many coaches around the country were recruiting him to transfer. He didn't. He stayed and became an All-American at DB.

Now, I know curfew is not the same as cheating. But, it does give hope that our recently dismissed QB can still have success at ND.

I hope he does. He's handled the post-cheating issue like a man and I hope it is a serious learning moment in his life.

As always, Go ND!

(excuse all spelling and grammar errors for reasons stated before)

Ross Browner, Luther Bradley, Willie Frye, Al Hunter, and Kyle MacAlarney are some names that come to mind of student athletes that were told to vacate the school and after 6 months to a year were readmitted.

Cooper Rego, Lorenzo Crawford, and Elam are among those that got the boot permanently.

Different situations, different circumstances, different "sentences".

Notre Dame is a Catholic university but it welcomes all individuals of other faiths who have good character and moral integrity. Notre Dame's MISSION is to educate and help young men and women develop into adults with faith, character and integrity. Notre Dame is a university that among all its extracurricular activities and sports programs hopefully will have a National Championship football team. Notre Dame is not a university attached to a semi-pro football team.

Everrett Golson's not playing next year hurts the football team and the team's chances for a National Championship. It does not hurt the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame stood up for its principles when it hurt - meaning that the principles are real, not PR bullshit and will be followed even when it stings.

Everrett Golson and Brian Kelly have handled this extremely well. Everrett Golson did not blame Notre Dame and he took responsibility for his actions. Brian Kelly's public statements were fair and compassionate. A young man made a mistake, he will suffer the consequences and he will have an opportunity to grow from this mistake and become a better human being.

I am sad that Everrett Golson will not be playing at Notre Dame next season. I am proud that Everrett Golson will not be playing at Notre Dame next season.

Didn't Darrin Walls get kicked out for a semester too (I believe for something similar to Golson?)?

But on a serious note, I do wanna know if there is any stock in the Holy Cross rumors

Holy Cross has not been contacted by Everett or his family at this point. They do have a rolling admissions schedule so he does have until mid August. Lou from BGI said he actually would be surprised if that isn't the route Golson takes if he is serious about coming back in 2014. Referenced Tony Brooks doing the same thing when he was suspended.

I wonder if Tony Rice has reached out to him. He had some glowing remarks about EG at the beginning of last year.

This is true, but there were way fewer "haves", and way more "have-nots", in the 60s.

I truly believe that the biggest thing that has hurt ND long term are the scholarship restrictions. Until '73, there was no limit on scholarships. Then the limit was 105... allowing for a large amount of attrition/injuries on any roster and limiting the advantage to "grey shirts", JUCOs, oversigning, etc.

This "leveling the playing field" crap not only deprives kids of an educational scholarship they would earn in a free market, but it shifts the balance of power to teams who recruit locally and regularly skirt the oversigning rules. I can't believe the NCAA has seriously considered/is seriously considering dropping the scholarship cap to 80.

In '65 ND played three top ten teams in ten games. They were stacked teams, too. All the good ones did it, not just ND. ND's downfall that year was a season ending 0-0 tie with Miami. But it was a season with a huge classic victory over (4)SC. Losses were to (6)Purdue and (1) Michigan State.

This thing with EG is two fold. From what I have heard it was not his first such problem in the classroom. And it was similar to his problem on the field and in the film room. There were a number of things together that created some drag.

We will see if one of the qb's have developed over the spring. I believe all three have. I think people are being unfair to Tommy, that he is better than his sophomore problems; I think Andrew is ready to rock and roll; and I think Malik is not distinguishable as a first year quarterback from the others.

We will see when the season starts. I think the overwhelming odds are that Tommy starts for the Temple game. Who works in after that is an open question. A key to who develops into a starting quarterback and what success they have is whether we find a running back that can block in passing situations.

(A key to who develops into a starting quarterback and what success they have is whether we find a running back that can block in passing situations.)

The only problem with this is we want the ball in our running backs hands in open space ie check down routes. The other thing that is obvious is that Kelly loves to run zone and counter. When running those well a defense must account for a quarterback taking a defender away from the running back.

I think like many that Tommy is Tommy. You get what you get out of him. He has an average arm at best and has no running ability. Not trying to knock the kid I think he brings certain intangible s to the game such as TWTW;)

My hope is that Hendrix has improved. I feel that his athleticism allows more things to happen on the field. I just hope his decision. Making ability has gotten better.

I hope Malik never sees a down this year and is able to red shirt. He is the real deal and one day will be great, but I still think our team is on the brink of something special and I would hate to see him burn a year because of this mess. Look, our requiring although headache giving has gotten better every year with BK. if this trend continues we have a shot a being really good for a long while with Malik being a vital part of it!

Sorry for the rant but I have been watching Doc McStuffins and Mickey Mouse Club House for the last 2 days with a sick 18 month old and needed to vent!

Purdue, Michigan State and USC were all powerhouses back then. MSU went 19-0-1 in 1965-1966. Purdue won the Rose Bowl in 1966 (beating USC), which was a big deal back then. They had loads of talent as well as unlimited scholarships. The college game was Midwestern/Pennsylvania talent dominated as opposed to today. The Big 10 was the best football conference.

I really don't think ND was that stacked with talent, particularly at skill positions in 1965- Bill Zloch being exhibit A. The best QB and receiver on the team were on the freshman team that year. We did have a fine defense, which is why we won so many games in 1965.
