No the plan was for Golson, Nix, Tuitt, Daniels, Martin, and our stable of running backs to all play together for a run at a national championship.

Nowadays most elite programs get 1-2 real shots at making a NC run every 6 years or so. This upcoming year had a group of untested, but talented WR's and replacing Grace with Te'o as its only serious question marks. This was a NC or bust type year, that window is gone now.

Tailback and defensive back are still serious question marks, this coming year. There's ample evidence that both will be serviceable, but a NC run is going to require that they be better than that.

No. In order to play, a student athlete must be in good academic standing in the term immediately preceding the term in which he wants to play. In other words........ he has to come back and maintain academic standards for one semester, before he is eligible to compete again.

You can play and then redshirt later. Virginia Tech back in 2008 planned to redshirt Tyrod Taylor as a soph after playing as a fresh. Then the starter sucked week 1 and they decided to play him.

If someone gets hurt & loses a season, they can technically "redshirt" that year and get that year back, ie 4 seasons in 5 years.

In terms of Golson, not much different than tearing his ACL in July & losing the whole season I guess. Minus the injury part.

And the whole "being with the team" part, which is not insignificant, especially for a quarterback. He's not going to be on campus this fall, right? (unless he decided to move to South Bend and hang around, which is possible I suppose).

Zaire could play this year then develop a nagging hamstring injury that keeps him out his entire sophomore year.
But, really, I don't think that's necessary. As others have said, you can redshirt whenever you want. Didn't Schwenke play his freshman year and sit out his Sophomore?
