Plenty of names over the long history of Notre Dame football-both 'decommits and transfers.
Many posters have covered recent names. Here are a few older names:

Decommit
Floyd Little HB-many versions of what happened. One was that Little was getting on the train to head to South Bend when Syracuse HB Ernie Davis meet him at the train station and talked him into heading to play for the Orange instead. Per this story, Little's trunk made it to South Bend but Floyd wasn't with it.

Little is in the CFB HOF and had a great career with the Broncos

Transfers:
Best QB: Tommy O'Connell was a '48 ND frosh, transferred to Illinois and led the Illni to the Big 10 title and Rose Bowl victory over Stanford. O'Connell had a long pro career and was the first starting QB for the Buffalo Bills (also played with Bears)

Best RB: Probably Dorsey Levens (already mentioned by others) GT and Super Bowl w/ Green Bay

Best WR: Here is an OLD one-Bernie Kirk was the leading receiver for ND in 1918 & 1919 and received 'inducements' to transfer to Michigan (where he was named a Walter Camp AA). Only player ever to play for both Knute Rockne and Fielding Yost

Best OL: Joe Scibelli played G at ND in the 50s and strangely transferred to little American International (in his hometown of Springfield Ma). Scibelli then spent 15 year starting at G for the LA Rams-the last 10 as team captain. All Pro

Best DL: Art Donovan-played spring football at ND in '42 and then went off to WWII. Came back to ND in '46 but was told he didn't have a scholarship. So Art transferred to BC, then the Baltimore Colts, then the NFL HOF, then Lite Beer commercials

Best LB: Arnold Ale: started as a frosh on the '88 Irish National Champs and then transferred to UCLA

Best DB:probably Larry Kuharich, son of former HC Joe, who transferred to BC when his dad left ND, got drafted in the NFL and had a nice pro career in Canadian Pro Football

Some other ND transfers who did well at their new schools:

QB Tony Rados (48 Irish Frosh) transferred to Penn St and became QB Asst Coach Joe Paterno's first successful QB. Drafted by the Phil Eagles

QB Randy Wright('79 Irish Frosh) transferred to Wisconsin, had a good career and later started for awhile for the Green Bay Packers

DL Angelo Mosca ('55 frosh) kicked out of ND, transferred to Wyoming (kicked out of there too). In the Canadian Pro Football HOF-played in 9 Grey Cups. Considered the dirtiest player in CFL history-went into pro wrestling after retiring

QB Kent Graham (87 frosh) transferred to Ohio St and then played for the Giants

QB Zac Kustock (forget the years w/ ND-late 90s)-transferred to Northwestern where he started

DL Kilroy (forget first name/late 30s) transferred to Temple, probably best player in Temple history, All Pro with Eagles, played on two championship Eagle teams in 40s and was considered the dirtiest player in the NFL at that time. Once sued a magazine for calling him just that

RB Ron Bliey (at ND from 61-63)-considered the best running back ever from NYC (Brooklyn Tilden). But played at ND when single platoon football was the rule & Ronnie couldn't/wouldn't play defense. Flunked out of ND and transferred to Florida A&M. Changed his name to Blye(maybe it was easier to spell?) and played in the NFL for the Giants and Eagles

Great knowledge and info...why do you have only 29 posts over 3 years? If you have this kind of knowledge you should post more.

Zak went into the '97 B&G Game as the #2 QB. He had a terrible game and was well outplayed by Powlus, Jackson, and even Eric Chappell. Bad reads, bad throws, and a noticeable attitude on the sideline. He dropped to #4 and proceeded to transfer. Perhaps "the light" went on after his transfer. He was a much different player at NW and did well there.

Transfers and decommits are a big difference. Seems half the recruits out there decommit during the recruiting process but a much smaller percentage transfer.

Cam Newton and Russell Wilson come to mind for big time transfers. QB would make more sense for break-out ability than many other positions though. Only one spot to fill and hard to unseat an incumbent.

You do have selection bias, if you can't bust through the starting line-up your odds of transfer go up a lot. Therefore, transfers are not top talent on the teams they leave and less likely to excel at a national level elsewhere. Amir Carlisle hopefully breaks that mold.

I don't know if either of those could classify as "traditional" transfers for the fact that Cam Newton was close to being kicked out of school because of theft accusations and decided to transfer to Blinn college in Texas before eventually ending up at Auburn.

Wilson graduated and just decided to "try" another school and play for Wisconsin.

Both technically "transfered" but neither under tradition reasons. I.e. grades, or depth

No, Russell Wilson transferred bc he got beat out for the starting job by a younger QB. His coach wanted to get 2 yrs out of his QB vs 1, and they were close enough in competition that he decided to name the other guy the starter over Wilson.

But you are correct with Scam Newton.

IIRC I don't think Wilson got 'beat out' in a traditional sense. He skipped spring practices in favor of baseball. NC State coach Tom O'Brien got pissed because it was the second straight year Wilson skipped spring practice. O'Brien basically questioned his commitment and said he could leave. It did probably help that he had Mike Glennon ready to start in his place though.

Makes sense. Thanks for the correction.

A Mod over at 11W posted the following what people are hearing.

Alex has been hearing the same things as Biddle. Bowling Green, Northern Illinois & Ball State have all said to be in the mix for him to transfer to. Perkins spoke to a DC from a MAC school, no info on what school though. Staff doesn't want Perkins to transfer, no off the field issues it appears. Perkins wants to be a starter but Ohio State was straight up honest with him, and told him he probably won't be a starter for them unless there were injuries. Scheme and depth is the reason here. Perkins high school coach believe's he is heading to Bowling Green.

He and that receiver from South Bend can tear it up there.

BG had a decent season last year, and should improve with most of their key players returning (at least offensively, not as familiar with the defense). They get their QB, RB, top 3 WR, and TE back to what was a decent offense.

Wouldn't mind seeing a consistent winner at BG... maybe they could press for some of the "middling" Ohio players that OSU puts on the backburner in recruiting.

Not saying its true or anything but my OSU buddy read on 24/7 that Perkins HS coach had been in contact with Kelly but BK wasnt having any of it, which I like.

Perkins' high school coach was former ND DT Antwon Jones. I'm not surprised Kelly said "no thanks", but I'm sure he'd like to maintain a good relationship with Washington High.

Help me out here... if he wanted to transfer here why would BK absolutely not want any of it and why would we (fans) be happy about it... what am I missing?
