What is the "uniform surprise"?

I am afraid that most would feel the Faust jerseys, snake-bit. Maybe in three or four years . . .

But I love this thread being back. And I did decide to grow the handlebar mustache, anyone else in?

Nike Unveils New Cal Logo and Uniforms | STACK

After giving the Oregon State Beavers athletic program an identity makeover, Nike has revealed new athletic uniforms and a logo overhaul for the University of California. The re-branding features a new Golden Bear mascot, which is showcased on the sleeve of the football uniforms. In addition to the school's traditional blue and gold colors, gray is introduced in Cal's alternate jerseys. The historic Cal script remains intact.

“We feel we have developed guidelines that respect Cal’s strong tradition and universally recognized marks,” said Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour. “At the same time, we realize that we need to create a look designed to evolve with our changing world. Through a nearly two-year process, we examined the attributes that define our department and its values, including such words as innovation, character, excellence and commitment. These are the characteristics we want associated with Cal athletics, and they have helped define our new visual identity.”

is it just me or is anyone else feeling that by everyone trying to come up with these 20 minutes into the future styles, that they seem to be losing their new-ness and more and more people come back like my buddy buster above with a "meh"?

[by the way...reps for the first guy who figures out my scifi reference above]

Max Headroom, connect! Good reference!

I really like the volleyball uni's. My question about the football uni's is, "Why would someone work so hard to build themselves up, just to put that on and look like a cupcake?"

This thread just cracks me up! I LOVE IT! Saw my quote from last winter above. I wondered where I got the idea to grow my handlebar 'stache!

God I'm so tired of the flat futuristic look on EVERYTHING these days.

"Less is More." -Mies van der Rohe, architect

Train of thought basically saying that the design is perfected when there is nothing left to take away as opposed to there is nothing left to add.

I am in favor of this design philosophy.

It's good to a point but take it to an extreme and we end up having the fighting circles against the crimson lines in the NCG.

I'm just saying it's getting boring and predictable at this point for me.

An interesting point for discussion. One that could be fascinating for some and boring as hell for others. Things architectural grew from the most basic to the most ornate with retreats now and then. There's a happy medium somewhere. At times art and science collided. Sometimes with magnificent results and at others with tragic failures.

Seduction by reduction with logos and uniforms is one example. The simplified, interlocking "N" and "D" in combination with the colors blue and gold is one example. The pastel blue and orange of the Dolphins' uniform, associated with the Art Deco nature of Miami and Miami Beach is another.

Hell, Minnesota Mining and Manufacture is now 3M. International Business Machines is best known as IBM. The Golden Arches of McDonalds are recognized worldwide. When you see red circles separated by white do you think "Target?" Do you know, or give a damn ,about the history of the corporation?

Simple doesn't mean simplistic. Ornate doesn't mean functional. Neither does artistic sensibility negate utility.

Form follows function. Function follows need. A cringe here, a collapse there; this too, shall pass.

"Seduction by reduction." This is the best phrase ever. I will definitely share this with my architect friends.

And I will share a relevant quote from my favorite architect (Louis Kahn) on design:

“To express is to drive.
And when you want to give something presence,
you have to consult nature.
And there is where Design comes in.

And if you think of Brick, for instance,
and you say to Brick,
"What do you want Brick?"
And Brick says to you
"I like an Arch."
And if you say to Brick
"Look, arches are expensive,
and I can use a concrete lentil over you.
What do you think of that?"
"Brick?"
Brick says:
"... I like an Arch"”

I feel as though I'm being sucked into being part of an arch. Far from the keystone, but an integral part nonetheless. A devious protagonist/antagonist, if you will.

The history of engineering, design and construction is long, convoluted (at times) and often filled with foolish embellishments intended as a (pathetic?) paean to some god or man. Take the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The effort to build broader and taller edifices to the glory of God led to ornate flying buttresses. Advances in materials for building structures led to such things as the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Sears Tower, all the Frank Lloyd Wright designs (with a natural flow) and any number of Frank Gehry's creations intended as art form on the exterior and a flow that is also function on the interior.

I ain't no expert, but when it comes to buildings I like a little panache that evokes gasps and a gawk or ten. As long as they remain standing and meet a need.

The common thread is that the purpose, the interior utility and the structural integrity of the buildings were appropriate to their settings and have garnered interest and stood the test of (some) time.

Yeah, I don't know how much real "difference" there is from any of there other jerseys.

I will say that the new logo is sharp.

What about their jerseys?

C'mon, poet pokchop!

Just thougth I would get this thread back on track with one of the best uniforms of all times:

This is a uniform that doesn't need to be updated with every fad, and it is know and respected worldwide. All though it remains standard and traditional, alterations can't really ruin it's appeal:

See what I mean? Oorah!
