On II's podcast today they were talking about freshman that will push for playing time. The usual suspects were mentioned smith, vanderdoes, redfield. Then They both agreed that Luke could potentially jumped right into the two deep. Leapfrogging Atkinson, brown, etc.

I like it. I think him and if Tarean gets switched over (which I'm a huge fan of), they will both crack the 2 deep.

Luke does that when he steps on campus IMO

With all the crap we've had to go through from a CB recruiting perspective. We're gonna have some serious talent there now. We lose Jackson and Wood then in steps Luke, sounds good to me

I see the cb situation as this...

13: Jackson, Russell
14: Russell , wood
15: Russell, Luke

Luke in this scenario would be a 2 year starter and the nickel guy and major stud on st.

I must be having a complete brain fart...but who was the last defensive player to wear #3?

I didn't realize EV was supposed to wearing #3... Eddie Vanderdoes to Add to Notre Dame's #3 Tradition | UHND.com

Edit: A quick Google search brought me to an article from uhnd.com stating that until EV, the #3 jersery was exclusively used on offense. It began as a QB-only number until Arnez Battle moved from QB to WR, taking the number with him. He was followed by Darius Walker, Michael Floyd, and Amir Carlisle as offensive skill players to wear #3. From what I'm gathering, Cole will be the first defensive player to wear the sacred number. Go get 'em, Cole!! Wear it proud!!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not a #3 historian.

This is pretty funny...a quick google search lead me to this page: http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/notre-dame-football/17167-players-who-wore-jersey-3-a.html

Seems crazy, but I can't think of one either.

Didn't Tee have it for a minute?

I think he had #1

Yea, I think you're right, he was set to be #1. I still haven't been able to think of a defensive player who's been #3. It's such a historic number in ND football for QBs and offensive skill players. I guess I just assumed someone would have mentioned that Cole will be the first defensive player to ever wear said number (if it's in fact the case).

How did I not know that Cole was Darren Woodson's nephew? If he inherited any of that, he will be a great player. I hated the Cowboys, but have a ton of respect for Woodson. That guy balled out his entire career.

It's amazing how little Cole Luke is talked about. This kid could end up being one of the future leaders of this team.

Just another testament to how strong this class really is. Cole, Devin, Durham, Rashad, Mike Deeb... All these low key additions are full of maturity and talent.

May have something to do with having two first names. More likely that it's because IE groupthink revolves around drama.

These guys will do their "talking" on the field. No drama. No hangers on. They are smart enough to realize high school press clippings and recruiting services stars mean nothing now. Work hard - get a great education and develop your football talents to the fullest with outstanding coaches at Notre Dame and hopefully have a successful NFL career. It really is not that complicated.

Yep, everyone was pretty blah on CL. One of my favorites in this class. Betting he'll be playing significant minutes by the 3/4 mark. Great ball skills, fluid, and not afraid to lay the wood. Hoping he can add a little muscle and pick up the schemes quickly. IMO the most "natural" CB we've landed in a long time.

Thanks Whiskey. Good news. I'm one that holds the unpopular belief that our DL masked some DB talent issues. No surprised at all. Not saying our DBs stink, but I think they looked much better due to the simple fact our DL created bigger challenges for the opponents O. As I said above, I truly believe CL is the purest CB we've landed in a long time. I think Max will also be an instant impact guy as well. I'm banking on a nice big spike of INTs this year.

People are denying this? It's 100% fact.

Absolutely. Our coaches have freely admitted that our defense was very vanilla last year because it was too great a risk to leave our green defensive backs out on an island. Nobody noticed till the NCG because the front 7 was so good that it could get pressure and stop the run without having to get too creative or take too many chances.

Its weird to say about such a highly regarded recruit but with Jaylon, Redfield, Bryant, and the EV saga I feel like Luke is a guy who has flown a little under the radar but could be a big time star for ND down the road.

NBC's Keith Arnold just published his Freshman Focus article on Cole Luke. Worth noting:

Not surprising, but doesn't bode well for Brown or J. Atkinson.

Keith isn't the only one...
