Visiting Louisville this weekend.

Positive spin: would rather visit Louisville than visit Michigan w/ Mason Cole and George Campbell

Yesterday at the NFTC

6. Artavis Scott, WR, Tarpon Springs (Fla.) East Lake
While the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Scott posted an impressive 4.2 shuttle and 34-inch vertical, it’s when it becomes time to play receiver that Scott impresses the most. He’s not only quick off the line and getting into routes, but continues to show plus hands, impressive body control and the ability to make every catch and play on the ball required. He took home the NFTC MVP award at wide receiver. The Top247 prospect has offers from Florida State, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame and a host of others. Scott received an invite to The Opening following the event.

video of Scott dominating in East Lake's spring game against Osceola

East Lake was down 13-0, and then Scott went off and put the team on his back and lead East Lake to a 28-0 run to put them in the lead at half-time and they never looked back. He got things going with a 90+ yard kick off return for a TD, a 55 yard punt return for a TD, a 68 yard TD reception, and a 90 yard TD reception.

If Scott keeps this sort of thing up, he could see his rankings climb up towards that 5* status.

OHSAA won't let us have spring football.

that is one thing Urban said he would make every effort to get

yep, all the states in the south do, and I really think it's part of the reason why they are ahead of the north in football. States like Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio produce plenty of athletes, but a lot of those athletes either just don't get the quality of coaching or player development in football that the guys in the south get, and tons of them also go the basketball route.

Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey are fantastic at producing quality talent.

I don't think quality differentiates from population size that much.

1) California
2) Texas
3) New York
4) Florida

New York is not a football states, and NYC is not a place conducive to producing huge amounts of talent. Give them a bit of a pass.

5) Illinois
6) Pennsylvania
7) Ohio
8) Georgia

Illinois has Chicago, which has similar detriments to NYC, but by and large I'd consider Pennsylvania, Ohio and Georgia to be the next three in terms of talent, in addition to New Jersey.

9) Michigan
10) North Carolina
11) New Jersey
12) Virginia

Well, all of those states produce talent, perhaps New Jersey is overblown. Virgina is coming on strong lately too.

Honestly I don't see much of a difference.

I've been thinking a lot about this issue recently and this post inspired some research. I currently coach HS ball in Massachusetts, but have spent the past 6 years involved with football nationally and internationally. I'm frustrated with the stringent rules governing the sport in MA and see our players develop at a much slower pace than the rest of the country. It's not only the rules but also the coaches' approach to off-season development.

After seeing the numbers below, it's difficult not to agree with Tom that more lenient rules governing the off-season are a BIG reason why some states thrive and others don't. Of course the big missing piece to this is racial demographics, but just looking at population, the South is pretty dominant.

I also added Utah, Hawaii and American Samoa to the list because their numbers are a clear indication of the talent polynesian players bring to the table (the main reason I want Luatua at ND!).

I used this article from Rivals.com for the data: Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Where the FBS signees come from

NY and Illinois are likely lagging due to the reasons listed by Buster. Pennsylvania, NC, NJ and Virginia are respectable while Ohio is where they should be. Michigan is the only "northern" state outperforming their population while ALL of the southern states I looked at (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisianna) are.

1) California (251 signees, 104k playing, 416 ratio) - Rank #12
2) Texas (346 signees, 167k playing, 485 ratio) - Rank #16
3) New York (27 signees, 35k playing, 1,317 ratio) - Rank #34
4) Florida (332 signees, 41k playing, 124 ratio) - Rank #1
5) Illinois (77 signees, 47k playing, 617 ratio) - Rank #20
6) Pennsylvania (63 signees, 26k playing, 419 ratio) - Rank #13
7) Ohio (145 signees, 46k playing, 321 ratio) - Rank #8
8) Georgia (184 signees, 32k playing, 178 ratio) - Rank #2
9) Michigan (62 signees, 42k playing, 690 ratio) - Rank #24
10) North Carolina (73 signees, 35k playing, 485 ratio) - Rank #15
11) New Jersey (56 signees, 25k playing, 419 ratio) - Rank #14
12) Virginia (79 signees, 25k playing, 323 ratio) - Rank #10

14) Massachusetts (10 signees, 19k playing, 1,987 ratio) - Rank #36
23) Alabama (83 signees, 22k playing, 274 ratio) - Rank #6
25) Louisiana (81 signees, 20k playing, 251 ratio) - Rank #5

POLYNESIANS
34) Utah (36 signees, 8k playing, 229 ratio) - Rank #3
40) Hawaii (20 signees, 5k playing, 244 ratio) - Rank #4
NA American Samoa (5 signees, 300 playing, 60 ratio) - Would be ranked #1

Officially dropped Michigan from consideration, choosing from Clemson, UCF, and Florida today. Or in other words, choosing Clemson.

Good. Anywhere but scUM. Even though we should probably start rooting against ACC schools in recruiting now since we play them 5 times a year

I recall Whiskey posting some pretty ugly graduation statistics from Clemson...hope that he can beat the odds.

A lot of rumors that Michigan was 'dropped' because he had academic issues. Not sure if that means a transcript issue, grades, etc, but word is that he couldn't pass Michigan's admission requirements which led to him dropping them.

Reminds me of our situation for AQM. Everyone expects the stud to land at your school for months, and then he can't fulfill his academic promise to the University and he is gone.

I forgot all about him...would have been nice that's for sure.
