If we finish with Eddie I very roughly guessed the 14 class will have 23 spots at least. I love that and almost glad we didn't add 3-4 more this year.

That's probably too high. Assuming no EV, 2013 Fr + So + Jr = 62. That means the magic number for 2014 recruits + 5Ys will be 23.

We always seem to bring back more 5Ys than anticipated (we're overly optimistic), so I'll guess we bring back 3 5Ys at this point. That would leave only 20 spots for 2014 recruits. If we win the EV lottery, that drops to 19.

Those numbers assume no medicals or transfers, though. So we'll likely end up with 1-2 extra scholarships; but "at least 23" is probably pushing it.

I think Lombard is thought of as they only guarantee

Current juniors with an extra year of eligibility: Hendrix, Massa, Welch, Heggie, Nichols, Lombard, Utupo, Nix, Moore, Wood, Collinsworth.

Lombard is the only consistent contributor on that list (aside from Nix). Big Lou will have his degree in hand and a 1st round grade; very unlikely he returns. Tuitt could jump early, but he wouldn't factor into the 5Y calculus either way. I think he stays. Welch, Moore, and Collinsworth could play themselves into a 5Y this year. Nichols is likely to take a medical, and the rest simply haven't been able to break into the rotation.

3 5Ys is my optimistic guess. More likely, we'll whiff on a few prospects late next cycle and end up bringing back 4-5.

Agreed, but he'll have to fight off some freakishly athletic underclassmen this year. I'd give him a 50/50 shot at getting asked back right now.

That's fair, and you'd be right if those assumptions pan out. I'm skeptical that we'll only take 2 5Ys, though. We always look at the list of eligible seniors, hold spots for the guys in the 2-deep, and then assume we'll fill up with 4- and 5- recruits.

But aside from the 2011 class, we always seem to whiff on prospects down the stretch, which results in a bunch of marginal 5Ys getting asked back. Hopefully that won't be the case next year.
