I don't think a stipend is the way to go. It wouldn't solve more problems than it would create. I do think the athletic budget should be a tad more flexible with respect to current players. This way a university, and its entire athletic department, is liable for any mismanagement. Football screws up well its going to effect tennis and mens basketball too. This should create enough ramifications to avoid cheating/paying players. Giving the money straight to the kid allows a Jim Tressel response of aiding and abetting with a small likelihood of being caught.

Back to the topic, (maybe the first time I ever said that!) There are kids that don't want to go to a school where they have to live in general dorms for three years. There are kids who don't want to find a good looking girlfriend that is smarter than they are. There are kids who don't want to go to a school where every paying customer, or partial scholarship is richer than they are, so much so that it makes one feel uncomfortable.

Is this all transitory? Yes. Are those that do accepted? Yes. Is it worth the risk? Almost always. Is it going to show up as too much for some 5*'s? Hail yes. Cause some to take a second and third look? (See "Garden at Gethsémani for more information on mindset.)

This is not much of a hyperbole. No one likes to look bad, that includes stupid or poor by contrast. Everybody wants to fit in. If you want a better example of what the fear is, see Manti Te'o. My hope is that will actually work for ND's recruitment and show how the ND family rallies around one of their own, regardless!

I think a 7 hour drive within the South and its culture is a lot different than a 17 hour drive to another region of the country. I wouldn't discount it altogether. I guarantee you he hears people talk about how the SEC is the only real conference about 100 times per day.

And this is based on NOTHING at all, but ...

I wonder if he decided he needed to visit an SEC school--just to keep his options open--because of the Manti situation. The Alabama fans where I live were pretty nice about the NC blowout, but they were absolutely ruthless about the Manti debacle. Folston could have gotten overwhelmed, lacking perspective about how these things take a few days to blow over.

Things have cooled down considerably at this point and his friends have probably backed-off a lot.

Had we just showed up in the NCG.....

It looks like he has good patience and uses his blockers really well. His top speed is outrageous. He doesn't dance at all; makes his cuts and goes. I hope he inks his name at the bottom of the ND LOI!

Should have just let Clement commit to ND...SMH at Brian Kelly and staff lol

We've currently got the 6th and 10th RBs nationally in Bryant and Folston, respectively. That's a far better pair than any of us expected to land before the season started.

Clement is 12th, and given the staff's hesitance to accept his verbal when we still had Jamel James, it seems they consider him more of a pure RB than a hybrid. If that weren't true, we'd probably have Clement's verbal right now instead of Folston's.

In any case, let's save the head shaking until after NSD.

I was avoiding using italics but I can see how it may have seemed like I was serious. I put no type of deceit beyond any SEC school's boosters, except perhaps those of Vandy or Kentucky.

Really? UK has long been the site of paid players. Maybe not in football but basketball, yes. Calipari is as crooked as they come.

Im a big UK fan as well as ND. He doesn't have to pay the kids anymore. They know they are about to make millions in the NBA.

Calipari has a knack for getting out of Dodge right before the posse arrives.

Thats the exact impression I got.

I really like the improvement between the sophmore film and this clip...He never danced in any, but now you can see the cuts happen w/o hesitation...also I love that he'll take the flat cut early, not lose speed, and then "POP"...out he comes...and everybody's pursuit angles blow up...he is a better back than I thought he was...Woohoo.

Just FYI but one of the coaches he spoke highly of is almost certainly gone to the Cowboys. Craig, former FSU recruiting ace he is tightest with, is still there though.

Feeling pretty confident both stick.

That would be fine, expect when the are selling Eifert Jersey #80 jerseys I think the kid should get his cut. #80 isn't popular because of the numbers 8 & 0. Just sayin.

Late to respond on this, but you act like Eifert is the only player to wear #80...

The numbers on the jerseys have been, AND WILL BE around a lot longer than the players that wear them.

And no, I don't think that amateur collegiate athletes should get "a cut" of jersey sales.

They're getting a 80,000+ education for free, because they're tall/fast/can catch

I know the past part wasn't the crux of your argument but don't forget the hours upon hours of practice , weights, film, travel, super public lifestyle, and generally missing out on the typical college experience. Not to mention these kids have to be smart in NDs case.

I'm not going to lose sleep over this recruitment. I feel pretty confident with our current skill position depth. I'd love to keep Folston, but if he flips to Auburn, I'm not going to go crazy. I'd be perfectly content using that scholly to bring back Carlo/Fox and add one more to the '14 class.

No different than than someone that can play tuba at high level, except they don't sell the Tuba players jerseys.

They are also getting free marketing and top-level training.

I wouldn't mind a little stipend for them, but I think turning it in to the minor leagues would not be a good idea.

Tarean Folston, RB, Cocoa (Fla.)

The Prospect – The No. 9 running back in the 2013 class, and the No. 122 ranked prospect overall.

The Skinny – Folston picked Notre Dame over Oregon on January 2 during Under Armour All-America week. Since that time Auburn has been working the 5-foot-9, 190-pound versatile back very hard, and got him on campus Jan. 18 for an official visit. The Notre Dame staff was in Cocoa this week following the Auburn official visit, and feels very confident in keeping Folston in the fold. Prediction – Notre Dame

Whenever I watch his film I think "if only he was bigger or faster".... he plays like a #1 RB if he had homerun speed OR if he was big and physical enough to break first contact. His vision, patience, agility, etc. are all superb.

More than anything... he reminds me of a slightly shorter KeiVarae Russel. Neither of them have elite top end speed but they had everything else on film.
