Why couldn't they lead with that story??????

This is all a media ploy started by ESPN. Notre Dame became relevant again and no one can handle it. They all thought this news would make our recruits jump ship. Now that hey see it isn't working, the truth comes out.

I am having a difficult time comprehending this. Usually I can see some vision of what likely happened which coheres with past information and this often turns out to be in the ballpark of the truth. But this one is tough.

I'm going to hit the sack shortly with the following theory in mind:
1). Kelly wants the raise or an extension or something better for the assistants or whatever;
2). Swarbrick shunned him on this or lowballed him. They acted out their smiles at the game because that's what you have to do;
3). Eagles come calling and Kelly informs Swarbrick of that. Jack thinks he calls his bluff, but Kelly's agent recommends taking the interview to call Swarbrick's [some VERY important people have probably called Jack already pointedly asking what the he!l he's doing?];
4]. Kelly's agent is supposed to set up the interview secretly, so as not to cause the hullaballoo that we're currently experiencing, but "sources" doublecross Kelly and leak the story;
5]. Now the cat has run from the bag and we have a mess. A coach who never intended to bolt, but a rumor at the absolutely worst time. Suddenly everyone is caught with their pants down and some sort of damage control up close and personal will have to be done;
6]. Kelly and Swarbrick will both have mud on their faces but Kelly will slowly work his Irish politician magic and people will forget [having only a few minutes of attention span anyway].

or, 7]. I've slipped into a parallel universe and it's April 1st.

Good night. Hopefully we'll all still be here in the morning.

I just listened to Frank on CSN Philly (where I'm from) and he doesn't know anything. Doesn't mean anything. Plus he didn't say anything definitive.

I haven't had time to read through the whole thread, so apologies for reiterating what has surely been posted many times already:
  • All the top coaches do this to gain leverage for raises/ extensions. If ND wants to remain on top, it will have to pay top dollar to keep Kelly. He doesn't make close to what he's worth yet. Such is the price of business these days.
  • The timing is unfortunate as it relates to our recruits, but one has to strike when the iron's hot. Even after the NCG, we're still one of the hottest teams in the country right now. I'm not worried about kids jumping ship. And as others have mentioned, the position coaches could be reaching out to recruits as we speak to smooth things over.
  • With C. Kelly and Saban choosing to stay in CFB for what looks like the long haul, top CFB coaches seem to be realizing that it's a lot easier to stay on top in the college game than it is in the NFL. Assuming Kelly gets paid, he'd be a fool to leave now. I'm not worried yet.

You're right.... I am sure that the position coaches are just sitting around, curled up in the fetal position, sucking their thumbs... they sure as hell aren't out there contacting these guys in whatever way is permissible and reassuring them. And you're assuming that these kids are freaking out. The only statements I have seen are the recruits telling everyone to calm down. I'm sorry, I just don't see any reason to overreact to this.

Then you're seeing different reactions from recruits than I am. They are obviously caught off guard by this development. Can't say as I blame them. The only positive one I saw was from Jaylon.

My only hitch to all this is that wasn't it widely reported that there was an extension near anyways? Now saying that, why try and get more? Saying that, why wasn't the extension ready to sign before he left for vacation?

So now everyone has egg on their face, when a simple sit down meeting would have wiped it all away. Sad.

Charlie Weis might be available soon. I saw him in town just before New Years.

I want to thank BK for a hell of a season. However, even with the possibility of losing a stellar class, and maybe another rebuilding period, he should move on. Save all the talk about this is how it's done to get a raise, blah blah blah. He was going to get a raise and be taken very well care of. Now he has used our beloved ND, and I don't like. Sure I'm going to enjoy the seasons where will continue to flirt with NCs with him here, but there will always be a bitter feeling with me. What, every couple of years we have to go through this crap with BK?

Is he a ND guy or what? Is ND the best job "high school, college, and pro" or what? This was not necessary, in my opinion. I agree we was severely underpaid, but all he had to do was say "look at what we just did, and look at what we have coming", end of negotiation.

This is not a melt down, just an extreme disappointment.

In all seriousness, I doubt he leaves. The Bears job is more attractive than the Eagles.

money.
follow the money.

jack slow plays a kelly extension/raise over last month (wants to see how things go in the natty).

natty is a disaster.

kelly who had expected something to get done and be done BEFORE the natty is pissed thinking perhaps the woodsheeding probably cost him millions.

kelly and his peeps put this thing in motion.

ball is in swarbricks court now---and he has the pressure of all of a pissed off post natty nd nation waiting

methinks jack misplayed this one. and ND will pay. which truth be told we have money to BURN.

pay the man and lets get back to the return to glory.

I'm told the #NotreDame commits have a Facebook group with every member in it and they've started to discuss the Kelly news in it tonight.

So many comments about BK in negative manor when nobody really knows the situation. Judgement should with held until actual info is known. Sad

Is there any indication the Eagles want Kelly besides the fact they interviewed him? Did they offer him the job?

No, this chaos was created with news of the interview and two words following that.. "Mutual interest".. Some are rushing to judgement and deeming Kelly classless for interviewing and the "leaving the country"... Which he didn't even do lol.
