With the players that state puts out, if he has any idea the Texas job might come open in the next couple years, he'd stay put till then. So many Texas kids dream of playing for the Longhorns, he would have a Top 10 recruiting team just waiting for him yearly. Texas has deep pockets to pay him well, and a defensive minded coach like Diaco would do well there IMO. They would be a holy terror with Diaco at the helm.

I would be willing to be large amounts of money that Diaco would not get the Texas job, nor even been in the running. They are going to want a big name, proven HC.

The only way I see the possibility even coming up is if he stays here and we win three straight MNC's.

Never know, they may see the Muschamp hire from the other side and follow the model...

What I posted early this morning has now basically been confirmed. BC to announce coach Thursday, if Al Golden says no thanks (which it seems like he basically already has) then the torch passes to Diaco... ND has about 36 hours to keep Diaco in South Bend.

Then if Diaco says no thanks it goes to one of the other two guys. All of this is obviously subject to change...

I think BC is a lateral move and with another year like this one he could get a sweet deal at a big time program! How much does this hurt recruiting this year if he leaves?

BC Head Coach is not a lateral move.

I love Bobby D as much as everyone else, but to pretend as though he'll be a Texas HC candidate is ludicrous. He's had one noteworthy year, and chances are we, and in turn he, will not have the same year next year as this.

Not too long ago, people were calling for Kelly to replace Diaco. While he has a bright future, he's not going to be a Mack Brown/*Insert Huge Program Coach Here* successor without going somewhere first. Before anyone mentions Muschamp, he was a DC for 3 big time programs and a NFL team for a combined decade before he got the UF job.

I think he is gone......now we need to think about replacement Linebacker coaches and what Elliot will do as DC.

I agree with this guy. After Navy last year peeps were going crazy. Even after the second half of the FSU game. I think Diaco needs to establish a longer resume, but that is my opinion if I was an AD.

I had assumed Cooks would become our sole DC if and when Diaco left. I can't see Elliot getting promoted to DC unless Cooks leaves as well. Any rumors on that front?

Not that I know of. I also think Bill McGovern would be a good LB coach replacement. Take that BC!!!!!

this is all so frustrating. finally get to a point to land #1 class of recruits and Diaco bolts. what are the odds all kids stay on board?

Not only that- also wonder how this will distract the team from the task at hand.

I find it hard to believe that Swarbrick won't open up the pocket book here and outbid BC.

Am I just being a homer? Isn't being DC / Asst. HC for an elite ND program a better job than rebuilding at a bottom of the ACC BC program?

Damn right it is.

I'm having a hard time buying this.

I bet we're worried over nothing. Jack is too smart to let him go without exhausting all possibilities. Jack is a ballar.

As we are talking about how Swarbrick should open up the checkbook, what is our payday for a BCS bowl?

Bret Bielema to Arkansas? Hmm. Say, has a national title-level #NotreDame defensive coordinator ever taken a job at Wisconsin before?

What kids do you feel we're at risk of losing? I guess I just don't see this as quite as earth shattering as some others do. It feels like a surprising number of posters don't follow sports that closely. This is what happens when you win big. (Nobody knows anything about Diaco's plans, and I'm not assuming anything. But for the sake of this post I'll pretend that he is going.)

If Diaco had left last year, maybe we would have lost more recruits. The obvious irony is that the coordinators of 8-5 teams don't usually get HC jobs, and the flip side is that undefeated national champs don't have a ton of decommits. Last year's class ended up being pretty good, even though all the momentum was going away from us. Now, though, all of the momentum is going with us. I'm really not concerned about decommits, save for the two guys who we could end up recruiting over (which would technically be decommitments). And the beauty of the situation is that we're in a great spot to replace kids if we do lose them at the end, in some cases maybe even with better players.

I certainly don't WANT to lose Coach Diaco, but if he wants to be a head coach I want him to get that opportunity. If he goes, it will be a loss. But not a program-changing one. I believe it won't have much, if any, impact on recruiting. And I believe he would tell any prospective new boss that they will hire him with the condition that he will stay at ND through the NCG. I also believe in Kelly's track record of identifying and developing quality coaches.

So at the end of the day, this is the biggest story going on around ND football but it isn't huge story in the big picture, IMO. Par for the course of being an elite program.
