No kidding, Bell Biv Devoe was way better.
My 2 cents (in no order):
Led Zeppelin - great front man, great lead guitarist, and all time greatest drummer. The man played 10 minute drum solos with his bare hands for God's sake!
Pink Floyd - Creative geniuses, a completely unique sound unlike any other band.
Queen - IMO best rock front man of all time, and legendary in concert.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - they were a band, so this counts

Everyday I get older, Jim Morrison's voice sounds a little worse to me. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that it is not good. I'm also having trouble listening to Jerry Garcia. Oh well.
The Beatles were amazing in terms of execution. Between 1964 and 1970 they put out 10 or 11 top-tier albums. Rubber Soul, Sgt. Peppers, Revolver, the White Album, Abbey Road, and "Let it Be" were all incredible and each had some really innovative stuff on them.
Nonethless, the Beatles lack a certain swagger, though, and I think that holds them back in these conversations. They just don't seem bad a-- enough to carry the torch for the whole genre. Conversly a lot of the most bad a-- guys just didn't make enough good music to carry the torch either. That's why we all eventually settle around the Who and Zepplin. Lots and lots of music. Crazy dudes.
In terms of paradigm shifting, it would be interesting to get a list of the songs that really changed the genre.

Yeah two each their own... I have long thought The Doors are highly over rated... If I had to give one group the most undeserving of their status I'd go Doors without blinking... to me they are more mythology than music.
I respect pink Floyd much more... MUCH more, but even PF just isn't my cup of tea, hardly listen to them.
but that's just my two cents, I realize many love them, and that's fine.
Give me anything Clapton, Stones, King, Hendrix... I lean that way.

Jim Morrison has such a unique voice. It's so sinister and growly but still good enough to have hit songs. It fits the music perfectly, and another thing that's so special about The Doors is how well all of the members fit together even though they all have distinctly different sounds.

By far these three bands influenced rock and roll in a way no other band did. Pandemonium wherever they went. Love them all but Zep takes the cake for me personally.

I have a hard time putting the Beatles in this category. To me they were more of a Pop band for most of their careers. There was a period there in the middle where they got away from that, but they returned to their roots a bit at the end. Unquestionably one of the most successful bands of all time, I have a number of their albums, but I still think of them as more in the Pop genre.

Saw them the summer of '91 at the Cabaret Metro. They opened for Urge Overkill and Naked Raygun. My teammate was from Seattle so I had a bunch of their Mookie Blaylock material. Pretty sure Ten wasn't even out yet. Favorite band ever by a wide margin.

To leave The Who off the list of Brits isn't possible. They've had as much influence on modern rock as anyone along with the early Americans like Velvet Underground, MC5 and The Stooges... which people forget were early/mid 60's also.
BUT all those guys might have been in Tommy Dorsey cover bands if not for this fella and his ilk:
