Weis now entrenched as KU coach

Weis now entrenched as KU coach

LAWRENCE — Charlie Weis has inhabited this office for roughly six months, long enough to add a few personal touches.

The walls are decorated with pictures of Weis’ children, Hannah and Charlie, Jr. A small fridge has been stocked with bottled beverages. There’s a suitcase by the door and an exercise machine in the middle of the room.

“You see that box right there?” Weis said. “That’s a blow-up bed. Here’s the quilt. There’s a pillow in there as well.”

Weis found a two-bedroom place close to campus that he shares with Charlie, Jr., a student manager and offensive assistant on his father’s staff. When Kansas opens training camp, though, Weis figures he’ll just blow up the mattress, point a fan towards his face and crash in his office.

“There’s a little music playing,” he said. “I can watch TV if I want to. You’re looking at my bedroom. You’re in it.”

This is a personal space, one that was opened to a group of reporters for more than 2½ hours Monday morning. The purpose, presumably, was to provide a glimpse inside Weis’ world. It’s a fascinating place, deserving of further exploration at a later date, but there are two dominant elements: Weis’ job as the KU football coach, and his role as a father to Hannah, his 17-year-old daughter with developmental disabilities.

When he met with reporters Monday, Weis had just returned from a golf tournament that benefited Hannah and Friends, the charitable organization the family created for individuals with special needs.

Hannah lives with her mother in Florida, an arrangement devised to preserve her routine after Weis was hired at KU. Next year she will move to the Hannah and Friends facility Weis founded in South Bend, Ind., when he was the coach at Notre Dame.

The care is comprehensive, and even the guy who built the place doesn’t get a discount, Weis noted with some chagrin.

“We figure it will probably take my wife a bunch of months to be able to cut the cord herself and let her stay there, but once Hannah is comfortable, we’ll revisit the whole living situation,” Weis said. “For now, we’re going back and forth on a regular basis.”

This is where the roles of father and coach intersect. When Weis leaves his office, it’s often to board a plane to visit his wife and daughter. Hannah and Maura Weis will make the same trip in reverse when the Jayhawks play at home this fall.

It’s an unconventional arrangement, but Weis said it hasn’t hindered his acclimation at KU.

“I’m entrenched in here,” he said.

Weis has spent the past six months turning KU into his team. He installed his own offense, recruited his own players and trimmed the roster to reflect his philosophy.

There have been changes, the latest being Pat Lewandowski’s switch from defensive end to offensive tackle. More will occur when newcomers are added to the depth chart in the fall, with Weis working to assemble interchangeable parts on defense.

“All the two-deep guys will be playing,” he said. “It’s not like the starting quarterback. The starting quarterback is playing. The starting rush end is going to play, and then the guy behind him, he’s going to play, too.

“I don’t know if they’re going to play 50-50 or 60-40, but they’re both going to play significant snaps in every game.”

The major overhaul is moving on schedule in mid-June. Weis cautioned not to worry about recruits who haven’t arrived on campus, saying all but two will report by the end of the week and the remaining players will arrive in late July.

“The only reason those two guys aren’t coming is because they still have a class that’s going to take them until toward the end of July,” Weis said. “A lot of times when you’re dealing with junior college kids, the reason why they have extra classes is because classes that they were told were accredited classes, when you go through the process, sometimes they say, ‘Well, that class doesn’t count.’

“It wasn’t like they were short hours. It was like they had to go back and almost take another class to counter a class that they said didn’t count.”

Weis occupies this office because the two coaches before him, Mark Mangino and Turner Gill, combined to go 2-23 in Big 12 play over the past three seasons. Restoring competitive football at KU will be a huge undertaking, but Weis has accepted the job and all that comes with it.

“I don’t look at it like some of the other coaches who have taken over new programs,” he said. “The guys that are here now, they’re my guys. They’re not Mangino’s guys. They’re not Gill’s guys. They’re my guys.”

I don't think this is an intential shot at BK. If anything, it is trying to get the team to rally being Charlie.

I hope he does well. They guy might not be the most social guy ever, but he worked hard and tried hard for ND. Want to see him succeed.

I don't think he's taking a jab at him. I wouldn't read it that way atleast. Every coach at every new program has at one point or another been using "the last coaches players" or has been recruiting "his kind of player."

I like it, he's taking away the excuses from the get-go.

I'm still a big Charlie supporter, despite how many times he broke my heart. He's a football genius, he just needs time to adapt to the extreme learning curve and learn to deal with kids. ND was just not the place to start.

I hope his offense exposes the Big12's pathetic defenses for years to come.

They are "his guys" because he got rid of a ton of "Gill's guys", the guys still in Lawrence have proven to Charlie that they can be "his guys", and part of turning it around. I don't think it was a jab at anyone.

I don't know about a jab, but you know that he is aware of everything that BK has said that could be interpreted as a jab at the players he recruited to ND. I'm glad BK is at ND and Charlie is in Kansas, but Charlie is right about this and is saying the right thing. It may be fair to criticize Charlie as the head coach at ND or even his arrogance, but I think he's a stand up guy on stuff like this. I like Charlie a lot.

I will always respect Charlie, hell I'm damn near his biggest fan. He helped get my Pats Super Bowl Rings, coached my favorite football team, and above all is a great person. People I think have taken him the wrong way for along time. I wish him nothing but success at KU!

I dont think it was directed at BK at all. it seemed to me a 'general statement'. I think Charlie is going full bore into KU, and knows not to waste time with 'looking back' and 'what ifs'.

if it is some kind of 'statement' I think its more in support of Dayne Crist, rather than a shot at BK.

I was thinking that as well. Also thought it might be a comment like, "I still got your back, boys" to his guys who are still at ND and felt insulted by Kelly's comment last fall

The guy came up with "decided schematic advantage", nothing but love for the guy. Especially now that he isn't ND's coach anymore. Always seemed to be a good guy, who loved ND. Just didn't work out.

It's a soft jab, but more of a rally cry... he knew exactly what he was saying, and how it would be translated. CW has always been edgy, and honestly, I like it.

The above does not mean I prefer CW to BK. I'm a huge BK fan. Just saying I like the fact that CW still has a little salt...

I don't doubt at all that Charlie was referencing BK, but I also don't think it's anything to get all bent out of shape about. Like others have said, that's just Charlie's style. And I think he was just trying to say that he supports his guys and has fully bought into being their coach. I'll definitely still be rooting for him.

Definitely, a shot. Those were Charlie's guys Kelly was insulting. Look at the group that went to play in Hanna's golf tournament. The majority of ND fans may not have liked Charlie, but his players love him.

Truly great that "Charlie's guys" showed him love on the golf course. Too bad "Charlie's guys" didn't do the same for him on the gridiron.

"Charlie's guys" had a great opportunity against Georgia Tech, PSU, Michigan, MSU, PURDUE, BC, USC, NAVY, AIR FORCE, in '07. They had a great opportunity against UNC in '08, as well as Pitt in OT, BC (nothing says love like getting shutout unless it's losing to SYRACUSE after their coach was fired). Or maybe anytime in the month of November '09 when his job was on the line. The Michigan and USC caliber teams one can understand but Navy, Pitt, CONNECTICUT (with a QB CHARLIE ran off yet some of you glass house guys dare to bring up Crist), and Stanford?

"Bumbling" Bob Davie was also "a player's coach" but without the benefit of a "schematic advantage" or a "brillant offensive mind" yet he has a better record at ND than Charlie.

But then, Ty "The Molder of Men" Willingham has a better record at ND than Charlie.

IF, this was "Definitely a shot" then the man is a fool. He's on his 4th job in 3 seasons. He should be focused on KU, his players, and his '12 schedule. He opens with S. Dakota St (Div II), then has Rice, TCU, and NIU. He could win as many games (3) as KU did in either of the past 2 season. He better do it in September because ISU looks like the only possibility of a win over the rest of the schedule.

Charlie Weis just said the most important thing for him is to lay low and not try to take credit for Notre Dame's success. Ok then.

What a joke he is. Other then having his players that he recruited still here he has done nothing for the 2012 teams success. I hope he never wins another game.
