Bumping this thread plays with my emotions... I cut people that play with my emotions.

Tells me there will be a open competition AGAIN this Spring and fall unless Golson makes huge strides.

I usually don't like to do this much futuristic speculation, but Everett hasn't shown anywhere near what we need at quarterback yet. Regardless of giving him a pass due to the very early amounts of actual "field testing" obtained, this still, by definition, stands as reason to expect Coach to be VERY interested in what Gunner can do by next fall.

The main thing that is persisting in my viewing of Everett's play is the intuition that I'm watching a guy who is having trouble looking through the trees and seeing the whole field. My itchy feeling about the games is that in almost half the plays [maybe even more] major areas of the field [and therefore our open receivers] are blocked, and consequently he is looking at people who may or may not be covered to throw to, or heaving it certain directions on faith. Thank the Lord that he's such an athlete.

Gunner's big. I expect that he has nowhere near these difficulties. I suspect that he'll have little to no problem standing straight in the pocket, rapidly [I hope] assessing the whole field, and getting the ball out to the open guy. "Coach smarterin' I are", but I wouldn't be stunned if he's noticing this difference. Gunner should stay VERY interested in learning everything he can from the games.

Two words: redshirt freshman

That's what we'd be getting again next year with Kiel.

Bump?

There were two new pieces of information. I wasn't aware that Kiel was traveling to prep him nor that he had tendonitis.

Tendinitis should feel blessed that Gunner is allowing it to temporarily live on his beautiful arm....

Yes... A five-star, #1 QB recruit, stud red shirt freshman.

None of that means squat in terms of learning--and mastering--the offense, especially when he's on the scout team all fall. Much like Golson, he's had his EE spring and then RS Fr spring to learn the offense.

I'm a big fan of Kiel. I really am. He's a stud. But I also think Golson is a stud, and I'll make the insane claim that if Golson and Kiel switched heights in HS, they'd have switched stars too.

Everything Golson is doing incorrectly is coachable, everything Kiel would have to learn is coachable too. That's the fun part, who will pick it up faster.

I do think judging too much from Golson's RS Frosh season is crazy. He ceiling is still the sky.

I said almost this exact same thing in the "who's next?" thread the other day... It all boils down to whether or not Kiel masters the offense before Golson clicks.

I understand with what you are saying and agree, but no one is saying that they should just hand over the reigns to Kiel because Golson isn't slaying it. What I am saying is that if Golson is still trying to figure things out by spring camp, then Kiel should get a fair shot to battle for the position, the same opportunity Golson got against Rees. Then if Kiel has a better grasp of the offense and/or is more skilled, then he should get a nod. I want the best player on the field, this year that guy is Golson. He clearly doesn't grasp the offense better than Rees, but his talent overrides that and that is why he is starter.

What does bug me (and you don't do this, Buster) is when people want to stick with Golson just because of experience or his record. Aren't these the exact same reasons people gave for starting Rees over Golson?

+1 Best player plays, even if I am the President of the Mayberry Golson Fan Club.

This is kind of why I wanted Tommy to start this year, unless Golson won the Heisman there was always going to be a QB competition next year. Kiel is just too much of a talent, the last thing I wanted to see was Golson do pretty good and make it a mess for the following year.

It was going to be a mess regardless with Kiel in the wings. He is going to put his name in the QB convo this offseason whether Golson finally tears it up or not. Too much natural talent/size/chest to not get a shot (assuming he has the same grasp of the offense that Golson had before his soph season started).

Competition breeds greatness. There should be a competition at every position every year unless you are all American a la Te'o, Eifert.

Wow you guys want another 1st year starter to struggle next year? If Kiel starts next year, then you do realize he will struggle like Golson is currently struggling right? Everybody hated Tommy last year but after a year of experience he has contributed significantly to our current 6-0 record as a junior. This is Golson's first year as starter! He's only a sophomore and you want an even greener guy to take the reigns? Ya'll are crazy.

Again, as I wrote literally a few posts above yours, this is the exact same thing people were using for reasoning to start Rees over Golson.

I thin it's pretty obvious Golson is our starter... if he doesn't develop then there will be a real battle come spring... and that battle will clearly be between Gunner and EG...

I really don't see any questrion as to who starts moving forward if Golson continues to improve though.

In a spread system two QBs are going to play a lot. I expect Golson to start next year, but Keil will get a lot of snaps too. Due to leads/injuries/missing meetings.

Wooly, I did read your post. The difference is that we knew Tommy wasn't gonna get it done in this offense after the 2011 season. He's not mobile and he can't throw down field. He's hit his ceiling in how far he can take this team. I was huge supporter of either Golson or Hendrix after 2011. Kelly was gonna have to take his lumps with a new starter eventually, but not year after year. Make no mistake. Gunner will probably play next year, but not in a starting role unless there is injury.
