Little Meme I made![]()
I can't see it
I think some of you are taking this a little to personal. I find nothing wrong with the article. He hit on key points and kept the article short and to the point. I don't think he was trying to delve deep into history to much.
I found humor in it. Not that it matters to anyone else but I think some of you are being a little bit defensive for no reason.
Great points Emcee-'hatred comes from fear'. College football is starting to squirm a little. Notre Dame on a roll will bring out the nation like no other team. I'm staying negative and picking Miami-its worked so far. Just get ready for the hatred because it will certainly come if Notre Dame becomes Notre Dame again. Dont you just love it. Man- they gotta get by Miami.I liked it. Two good points in there:
1) current ND haters really have no reason to hate us and articles like Rick Reilly's are stupid and make no sense, and
2) even haters want us to be good again, because hating an above-average but unexceptional program is awkward for them.
I still don't understand why people hate ND b/c of the KKK. I guess I should buy that book he mentioned. Also don't know why people started hating ND when Bob Davie was hired. And he said the new way to start hating ND is to not hate them. Then says we need to win games in order for people to hate us.
So that means people don't hate ND unless we win games, which in my opinion is not true. If anyone disagrees with that please explain.

Good lord ... please cut it out with the attacks on a straw man. You can hate the article but be fair to the guy, please.
First, I thought it was quite clear that the point is not that anyone hates ND because of the KKK ... it's that the KKK hated ND. When the KKK reconstituted itself as an anti-immigrant group in the 20's, it began to hate the waves of immigrant Catholics coming to the country and recently arrived, and ND was a symbol of those immigrant Catholics. The KKK was the "first wave" of ND hating.
Second, I also thought it was quite clear that he was saying that this "third wave" ND hate, hate based on the fact that we get the perks of a major powerhouse without playing powerhouse football, is not as fun for the haters as hate based on greatness, the "second wave" of ND hate. Think about it. I mean, suppose you are a Red Sox fan. You hate the Yankees. What was more fun: taking down the Evil Empire in the 2004 playoffs en route to your first World Series win since 1918 ("second wave" ND hate, hate based on greatness) or sweeping the fallen dynasty in June 1990, forcing Steinbrenner to fire Bucky Dent and hearing silence where you used to hear those chants of "1918" ("third wave" ND hate, hate based on schadenfreude and something like disappointment that the team you hate is no longer a worthy adversary). Obviously the "second wave" hate, right? You want the team you hate to be good, actually, even if you don't realize that yourself. I think that is actually a really interesting and insightful point that is undeserving of the hate its getting right now.
The whole thing reads like a giant backhanded compliment
And the KKK v. ND was not a "wave." You can't take a small blemish based on bigotry 100 years ago and call it a wave. I honestly think the article was written b/c its ND, and he knows people will read it, and discuss ... and he has me there.
I've never heard of the writer until I read this...which is exactly what he wanted.
Im really confused by what you're saying. The author was not saying that ND was involved in anyway with the KKK. He is saying that the KKK hated ND because of our catholic roots. I'm confused how you take that to be a blemish on the university?
Maybe poor choice of words. I didn't mean it in the context of a blemish on the university. Referring to an insignificant occurrence in history and equating it to a "wave." My whole point is the article was exaggerated and off-point.
