Speaking of MSU, do you believe this really happened?

Zachary Tennen, a 19-year-old sophomore at Michigan State University, was at an off-campus party when two college-aged men approached him and demanded to know if he was Jewish.

When Zachary said he was, the men made a Hitler salute, said they were part of the Ku Klux Klan, and beat him unconscious, breaking his jaw in the process.

While he was knocked out, one of them stapled the boy’s mouth shut while guests at the party watched. No one intervened or called the police – instead, the other guests kicked Zachary out of the house the moment the 19-year-old came to.

Zachary is scheduled for surgery this week, but his trials are far from over. As East Lansing police try to find the men who assaulted him, department spokesmen claim they don’t believe the attack was a hate crime, and are refusing to investigate it as such.

Zachary’s father Bruce is trying to contact the Anti-Defamation League and the FBI regarding the attack, to see if their intervention can make East Lansing take the assault seriously. Please, join us in calling on ADL Director Abraham Foxman and the Bureau’s Civil Rights Division to look into this case, now.

From news reports I read:
The incident occurred on Aug 26th or 28th, (I've read both dates in news reports) at a party at private home, OFF Campus, so MSU isn't involved. MSU students including the victim were at the party. Most of the attendees were in the backyard while the incident took place in the front yard meaning most people weren't aware whatever happened was taking place.

According to reported police interviews there were two people involved, Tennen and the one punch thrower. The day after the incident police couldn't find evidence to corroborate the accusations of a hate crime. They continued to interview people however and have a suspect. The police reported to the prosecutor who issued a statement yesterday that there was no hate crime.

Ingham County’s prosecutor said a Michigan State University sophomore who claimed he was punched in the face last month because he is Jewish was not the victim of a hate crime.

“There is no indication at all that this was a hate crime. None. Zero,” Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said Monday. “I think it’s a shame when one person makes an allegation and everyone takes it as the truth and gets up in arms about it.”

The local media, TV and print, covered the story. I haven't found a single reporter implying that there was sloppy police work or a coverup.

There are jerks in the world. Nasty jerks. There are also people who get into situations which they later have to explain to parents. (Check Twana Brawley and Al Sharpton.)

At the hospital the dad, the son of a deceased judge, was angry that the hospital hadn't reported this to police (it wasn't a GSW or a knifing). But apparently dad didn't call the police from the hospital either. Dad sent out tweets about the incident, supposedly hired a lawyer but apparently isn't taking calls from the media now.

There was a call for people to contact the Anti Defamation League but they were already on it. Turns out they don't see evidence of a hate crime either and said so in a statement last Friday.

Dunnings’ comments follow a statement released Friday by the Anti-Defamation League’s Michigan office, which said it believed the “evidence does not support (the) claim that the assault involved anti-Semitic hate speech or gestures, nor does it indicate that the incident was motivated by … religion.”

I had no idea, nor the time. And I knew there were good people around here that could get to the bottom of it. That is why I said "do" not "can" in my question. I didn't want to make it an issue with the group that sent me the petititon. That is why I left some of the petition information at the bottom. I will contact them tomorrow. My credulity was roused by the fact that so many people witnessed to what must have been strangers doing this at a party and did or said nothing. That isn't human nature.

Maybe I'm taking these comments the wrong way, but...

This is a terrible thing that has happened, and personally I will be praying for this young man's recovery both physically and psychologically.
