Louisville finished 7-6 last year... in the Big East... and is ranked #25 in the AP poll. ND is unranked finishing 8-5 with 4 of the 5 losses coming against a top 5, 2 top 10, and a top 25 teams. Louisville lost to Marshall and Florida International last year. FSU, who came into the bowl game against ND with an equivalent 8-4 record and barely won by 4 points as Tommy Rees threw an interception in the endzone, is ranked #7.

Anyone (looking at you Rick Reilly) who thinks ND gets undeserved hype is at best a conscious hater and at worst a complete moron incapable of processing factual information.

Preseason polls are complete bullshiit. I'm glad ND isn't ranked. Unfortunately it won't stop idiots from saying ND is overrated.

The BCS had a few things right in my opinion, waiting until week 6 or whatever to publish their first poll was one of them.

No one would stand for that. The preseason polls generate all kinds of interest (read: this thread). But, I agree that they mean absolutely nothing.

Saw this too. Seriously, WTF? Hopefully Bama is firing on all cylinders week 1 and puts an end to that voter's delusional thinking.

I still haven't figured out Reilly's article. Anyone that follows college football has some sense of where things stand. I can't figure out his motives now other than the start of the season is near annd things are a little slow for him.

It seemed like a personal attack to me. I've never been a Reilly fan but I didn't necessarily dislike him. His stuff seemed like fluffy, lighthearted journalism. I don't remember anything that struck me as hard work, deep digging reporting. I guess I figured he had a decent TV presence and would tell these little stories of interest. Never associated him as a heavyweight beyond tv appearances. May be I was wrong.

Well, maybe I wasn't.

I was looking at the AP Poll earlier and thinking the samething. For once, the coaches poll actually reconizes the potential of ND. I, for the life of me, could not figure out how FSU is ranked 7 when ND lost by 4. What questions has Texas answered about its football program? Louisville...what the ****?

Yeah. ND is annually overrated. And if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle.

I hope Michigan upsets bama, and then ND beats Michigan like it should have last season. Rick Reilly would have a stroke

Yeah I don't know where this came from. It's not like the media, or CFB is hyping ND up this season. Most give them, at best, somewhere around 7 wins. Even last season, pundits were cautious with ND. I don't know, maybe hes going through a midlife crisis or a divorce and needs an outlet for his rage.

Great post, Lax. My biggest issue with Golic's response to Reilly was that he did not make any of this case. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he said what he said, but I did think it was a tad defensive because his main point was "how can you blame ND?" or "it's not ND's fault" and I thought there was a good case to make attacking Reilly's points directly. What overhype? What treatment "like Lombardi's Packers"? Too many people just accept these ideas as true without any real examination of how the facts line up with the claims.

I am so glad we are un-ranked! Can only go up from there. I've hated it the last few years where we are ranked and then totally disappoint.

It's nearly impossible to play for a NC if you go undefeated starting unranked.

So it's not a good thing.

But with the schedule we have, we'll be fortunate to ever reach ranking.

And to add to that, if we go undefeated, we should certainly make the NC with our schedule strength.

That's the only blessing to our daunting road ahead.

For those who care in the AP poll we received the most votes of anyone not in the top 25 at 83 votes. Washington (55 votes), Auburn (53), North Carolina (32) and Utah (30) round out the top five of unranked teams.

In the USA Today Poll we are ranked 24th preceded by Florida and followed at 25th by Auburn.

A little late on this, but here's my theory.

You're not wrong... he's all fluff.

Honestly, I think the reason for this attack was because ESPN/ABC was contemplating not renewing his contract so he picked an easy and high profile target. He knew it would ruffle the feathers of one of the biggest fan bases in the country and everyone would be talking about it making HIM relevant for a little while prompting the big boys to renew his deal. Just my opinion.
