They wont be behind McCarthy. BK is smart enough to keep building and not play a 5th yr guy who has never played. Badger will take this yr just to get back in football form. As hard as he works and even though he worked hard during his mission there is no way he is in football shape. Hardy is interesting bc he will def get PT this yr just a matter of getting his legs back under him from being off a year. Motta/Slaughter are the elite talent on NDs roster but all it takes is Bennett Jackson to go down and Slaughter is a cb. Collinsworth id doubt contributes much this yr. All I was saying is these young kids have a grest shot to come in and get some great Shots at PT

On the flip side, you don't burn a redshirt to simply not play a 5th year you used a scholarship on for a reason.

I don't disagree with your larger point that the freshmen safeties will have an opportunity to earn some PT, but unless you start 0-4 or something I think you have to play your best guys. I'm not saying I think McCarthy definitely is that, but if he earns snaps he should get them unless/until we have given up on the season and are only playing to develop guys for next year.

The only thing worse than playing a 5th yr guy who has never played, is playing an 18 yo who never played and has never seen a playbook before. We used to call Harrison Smith Captain Caveman because he looked so lost early on (and had that hair).

McCarthy will play if he is better than the freshman. He's been injured and, as it turns out, playing behind a bunch of NFL players (including a 1st round NFL pick) as well as Slaughter and Motta. He might be good for all we know when he's healthy, but Collinsworth is #3 at this point.

I think the freshman will play if they prove that they make the team better on ST or something else, but not just to get them minutes.

There will be a very heated battle for that 3rd position. I guess we can agree to disagree abt DannyMac

Just to be celar, my point is not that DMac is good (I am sure you have a much better understanding of that than I do), just that I don't think he'll sit if he is better than the freshman.

It seems like safety is one of the most scheme oriented positions. Everything goes to pot if the safety is out of position, so using freshman back there is a big risk unless they are really exceptional.

Shumate, Barratti, and Prosise are all physical specimens, but I don't see the latter two as ready to go considering Baratti's position changes and Prosise's level of competition. Perhaps Shumate can step up?

I totally agree that Hardy is a big X-Factor.

Regardless of the battle at safety, I just hope the freshman get a lot of PT on special teams and mop up. We have to start getting these guys more involved so that we have less questions at the start of every season. The past is the past, but if you truly want to be a team that reloads, PT has to be a priority. Tough I know, just hope we have a lot of early mop up time to let these guys loose.

The tradition of good white safeties continues....Zbi, McCarthy, Smith, Badger?, Baratti

;)

Yeah, I don't know Bery. I agree with you about Zbi and Smith, Kyle was overrated and undersped, but all we had. Maybe putting Badger on that list, at this time - I don't know!

Hey, are all those guys really white?

All viable points.

Although I think McCarthy will be given a bigger role than we all may think, if he stays healthy.

I don't. The kid's great. Not many would come back from a broken neck to play again, but there is a reason he hasn't played. I don't know what it is, but there are new guys with greater abilities. So, like that.

Nice little article, but I really hope Nick spends his time poring over the playbook. Pouring over it (be it water, milk, OJ, etc.) would make it unreadable.

Still, I can't get over it about Collinsworth. Hope he returns full go next year.

Freshman Nicky Baratti moves up to No. 2 on the #NotreDame depth chart at strong safety. Soph. Matthias Farley is backup at free safety.

Motta is fine. If Navy doesnt complete passes against our D i would be VERY concerned bc that means they are running the ball at will.

Motta will be a solid safety for us this year, I hope he stays healthy.

I like Baratti's raw talent. But how many minutes of Secondary Playing Time would we have on the field collectively? That's probably the area that needs the most right hand and left hand reading and reacting together as one.

A rookie corner or a rookie safety in a field of 4 is worrisome. Expecting a rookie Safety to anticipate a rookies Corner's move and vice versa strikes me as smooth as Paul Ryan and Joe Biden sharing a checkbook, one responsible for making deposits and the other for writing the checks.
