Why does it matter that a third-string QB can't play in week one?

Regarding Tommy, did what had to be done (don't completely agree with Carlo's)

My gifs weren't in celebration of Rees's suspension. Its more in my lack of confidence in Kelly not to play him

I know three things:

1) I am ashamed of all of you for your celebrating what is the lowest point of a young man's life. He is missing the experience of a lifetime, losing his role on the team and watching his career fall to peices.... and you idiots think it is a day of celebration. Whether you want Rees to be the starter or not (I don't), celebrating the misery of our Notre Dame brother is sickening to me.

2) A large majority of this board seem to not care about these guys as people. Simply as numbers on team. I thought Notre Dame stood for more than that.

3) Today's response to Rees' punishment has me seriously considering deleting my account to this board.

Uhhh, maybe he should have thought about that before he assaulted a police officer?

So, if the situation were different and Rees had broken his leg your response (a gif celebration) would have been similar? I've been a strong proponent of starting any of the other QBs on the roster in Dublin, but despite the fact that this outcome is pretty much cemented my exuberance has been tempered by the circumstances which have led to it.

Although I don't agree with your take on Rees' punishment (discussed thoroughly in another thread), I do agree that celebration in light of the news is distasteful and am disappointed with some of the reactions. I would consider it unfortunate if you decided to delete your account. As a less frequent poster but frequent reader of these boards, I generally appreciate your contributions whether or not I agree with them.

Breaking his leg would not be his fault. This is entirely his fault. He assaulted a cop.

I think you may be missing the point. I haven't seen anybody defend Rees' actions that night. I think it is pretty universally agreed that he made a mistake(s?) and that some degree of punishment is warranted. The points of contention are 1) was the degree of punishment proper, particularly when considering prior precedent (discussed in another thread) and 2) is celebration of Rees' suspension really an activity that a fan of Notre Dame should engage in?

It should also be noted that Rees plead guilty to consumption of alcohol by a minor and resisting law enforcement (two misdemeanors) and not assault on an officer. But hey, if you think that a seemingly baseless charge that was eventually dropped is enough for you to celebrate the punishment of a kid who has worked his butt off to lead his team to 16 or so victories over the past two years and has done so while being a seemingly fine representative of the University aside from the incident that lead to this conversation, please continue.

If you'd care to read the quote I was replying to, the poster was distinguishing between the circumstances (Rees' suspension, which he was supposedly not celebrating) and the choice being made for Kelly (which he was celebrating).

If that distinction could be made logically, then one could easily celebrate Kelly's choice being made for him, whatever the circumstances be.

Might as well co-sign me onto all of your posts on this topic.

I think with Rees being suspended for the Navy game we may see both Hendrix and Golson play....IMO I sort of see a lil tryout taking place.

It's not good to celebrate a kid's dark spot in his life but in terms on ND football, him in no way being able to play the game opener gives those two other gentlemen a big leap in taking the step in being the starting QB.

Mods should delete this ****** Thread... Agree with you 100% Wooly.

You guys are *******s. Tommy Rees helped us win a lot more ball games than he lost.

Alright, this was in poor taste so mods feel free to delete, and I apologize to anyone who took this the wrong way. But I didn't mean it in the sense that I am happy Rees got suspended. It was more happy because now I know that means no matter what, Golson(most likely) or Hendrix will be the man and I do not have confidence in Kelly to pick anyone but Tommy.

But come on to whoever said I would be celebrating if Rees broke his leg? Thats not Rees's fault. This was 100% his fault

To clear things up... I don't think any of us who celebrated are celebrating this arrest and sequela of events that followed leading to his suspension. What we are celebrating is the fact that a QB, who the vast majority did not want to see start on September 1, is no longer starting on September 1. We will finally be able to see, through summer practice and the Navy game a QB, whether it be Andrew or Everett or even Gunner, that most of us think will give ND a better chance to win. It was in no way, shape, or form celebrating the low time in Tommy's life, but for the progression, al biet forced progression, in QBs. As a fan of a sports team, I reserve the right to get excited when the player whom I think is better and more suited to lead my team to victory gets the starting role, even if it is an unfortunate situation.
