See my point??

. . . Barwin played college football at the University of Cincinnati. As a freshman in 2005 Barwin played in all 11 games as a backup tight end finishing with eight receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown. In early January he joined the basketball team playing in 16 games as a backup forward.

As a sophomore in 2006, Barwin played in all 13 games as a regular on special teams and as a backup tight end. He finished the season with 13 receptions for 148 yards and two touchowns. He also played in 23 games for the basketball team, after joining the team as a walk-on. As a junior in 2007, Barwin played special teams, as well as a backup tight end, playing in 12 games. He caught 31 passes for 399 yards, and two touchdowns.

In 2008 Barwin was moved to defensive end. He finished the season with 53 tackles, and a Big East and team-leading 12 sacks. He also had 20 quarterback pressures, eight pass deflections, three fumble recoveries, and three blocked kicks. His play helped him earn First-team All-Big East honors honorable mention All-America as well as the Claude Rost Award, which is given to the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Barwin finished his college career with 16 starts in 51 games (14 at defensive end, one at tight end, one at H-Back) recording 66 tackles, 12 sacks, three fumble recoveries, eight deflected passes, five blocked kicks, and 53 receptions for 692 yards and six touchdowns . . .

Where better to find a defender that can run a 4.5 forty that has some ball skills?

Maybe mentioned earlier on thread?: Matuska also plays on their very successful basketball team.

Stumbled across a web site that had film breakdowns of our current 2013 commits and posted all of them to this thread. Now posting to the individual recruits thread.

The analysis is done by Matt Alkire who worked for Scout for a number of years. Here is his bio for anyone who cares

Matt Alkire is also employed by Fox Sports where he works as a college and high school football recruiting analyst, mainly covering the Northeast portion of the country for Scout.com where he coordinates with players, coaches and administrators at the high school and collegiate levels. He is a regular for many ESPN radio affiliates for both the NFL Draft and high school recruiting, contributes on a regular basis to Fox publications and was also featured in former New England Patriot All-Pro Brent William’s book “Recruit My Son”. He has been doing extensive film study since the 2003 season for the NFL Draft. As a football player, Alkire played both defensive end and tight end and comes from a family with a rich coaching background.

So there has been a lot of talk lately about the roles of the lb positions and it seems everyone has Alex Anzalone pegged for the inside, which I agree with.

My question is what about Jacob Matuska. His profile has him at 6'4" 235 running a 4.7 and most have him pegged at DE.

Alex is listed at 6'3" 220 running a 4.75 according to espn.

Is Matuska capable of filling any of the lb positions?

I'd guess Matuska projects as a TE/ DE due to a larger frame. Anzalone may be more "filled out" at this point.

I am not saying Alex should change positions. Just wondering if we could keep Matuska lean and at LB if needed.

I agree he is spotted for DE or TE just asking.

Matuska could play an OLB role though so long as he doesn't pack on the pounds, but I think we'll be fine there.

Watched his tape again and just feel he will end up at tight end. He has such a great combination of soft hands and being a wrecking ball while blocking. If he played D it would be much tougher to stand out with who we have and will be bringing in.

If Niklas can't go, then it would be just Koyack and Welch as upperclassmen, and Heuerman in his own class. So, with Kelly thinking a lot of two TE sets, that would mean a Koyack/ Welch "pair, followed by a Heuerman/ Matuska "pair". This would be a plausible scenario for roster management and ultimately lots of playing time. If Niklas CAN go, however, then HE is the ultimate TE blocking wrecking ball, so.....

None of us really knows. He's had enough concussions to cause concern, so he got checked out pretty thoroughly this summer. Kelly's most recent comments on the subject sounded very positive, though, so I expect him to be available.

Niklas was concerned after his concussion, as he should be since the studies are proving to be alarming in some cases. After cleared by the staff Kelly also got him info to get further opinions back home in Cali. He now is back at it putting in work and looks ready to go!

Jacob talks about his game Friday against Jaylon Smith's squad, and his impressions of Jaylon as a player:

love jaylon in the background gviing some love to the kids...

jacob's team should go 10-0 and be the favorites to win a state championship, especially if they make it through their region in the playoffs. probably the most competitive region in the division 4 in Ohio

The stands collapsed last week in their away game vs their rival Watterson, so I am guessing they took them out.

It's weird because he plays my high school Bishop Ready (we are Hartley's biggest rival), and I don't know who to root for my high school or for Matuska because of Notre Dame.

Root for your own team. You'll get to root for him when he's actually here.
