The young guys really are going to have to step up this season. This can be good for the long run but let's hope the front 7 can help them out this year.

Notre Dame loses Collinsworth for 4-6 months - CBSSports.com

The secondary was already going to be the biggest question mark on the Notre Dame defense going into the 2012 season, and now that unit has gotten thinner.

The school announced on Wednesday that safety Austin Collinsworth would miss four to six months after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. Which means that it may be December before Collinsworth is able to return to the field.

Collinsworth, the son of NFL analyst and former Cincinnati Bengal Cris Collinsworth, wasn't expected to start this season for the Irish, but he was expected to get some playing time behind both Zeke Motta and Jamoris Slaughter at safety.

Notre Dame will also have two new starters at cornerback in Lo Wood and Bennett Jackson.

Collinsworth's absence will be felt the most on special teams. Collinsworth was named Notre Dame's special teams player of the year in 2011. He played in all 26 games during his first two seasons in South Bend, with the majority of that time coming on special teams.

Man that would be great! Wonder if he would give up a medical hard ship for a few games? I bet not.

That's good news! As long as the back end holds up I would rather see him remain on the sidelines but then again if he is full strength and could be the difference in a W let's do this!

I think Kelly already said that Collinsworth is going to sit out this year, didn't he? Didn't he say that in one of the pressers?

Thought he was going to redshirt this year. I hope he does. Going to be a big cog next year... want him to have two years left.

I'm pretty sure he is but I'm guessing it depends on how healthy we are when he is full go.

I'd guess they are easing him back in to practice. can't see them using a year for 3 or 4 games unless another injury pops up.

Same here. To be honest, I really don't want him to play because our secondary has played pretty well together so far. Pushing Collinsworth back in could disrupt the flow BJax, Russell, Farley, and Motta have. Motta might like having Collinsworth in the secondary because it would be one fewer person to coach on the fly, but why mess with success? Give him the year off, get him back into game shape, and let him compete for the last safety spot next year.

Update on BGI ... Collinsworth is still being held out of practice. He began lifting again in November and he is basically healthy enough to practice, but they don't want to risk re-injuring the shoulder in bowl practice. He is expected to be ready to participate in spring practice without limitation.

tought he had shoulder issues??

Shoulder and back injuries can be related in a number of ways. You'd be surprised what compensating for an injured shoulder, knee or even ankle can do to your back. So this could be a case of an injury being worse than originally expected, or it could be correcting some discomfort caused as a result of healing the original injury. Given the timeline for this latest procedure, I'm not too worried. A major back surgery would have a much longer recovery period than spring practice.

His back surgery was unrelated to his shoulder. It was a discectomy, the surgical removal of herniated disc material. The main medical reason for removal is that material presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord creating a wide range of (painful) symptoms. Kelly likened it to Eiferts procedure his freshman year. If this was a growing issue, the time to do it was when he was recovering from his shoulder injury.

Do you think his injury was a blessing in disguise? I NEVER like to see a kid get hurt, but would we have done as well with him in?
Zeke played out of his mind, and his experience helped the younger corner backs know who to cover and where to be.
With Austin's injury we get him for 1 more year, and had experienced leadership in the backfield. I truely believe Austin is going to be a baller next year and can't wait to see him on the field.

lou somogyi was on bill king's show...bill asked about seeing some rumors about him heading out...lou responded back stating he doesn't know anything really but wouldn't be surprised due to the log jam and better athletes that will be ahead of him
