Worst Officiating Ever

How about a discussion of the worst officiating we've ever seen? I know everyone complains about the refs and thinks they screw over whichever team you pull for, but I think the vast majority of the time they're doing their best to be unbiased and the overwhelming majority of blown calls are honest mistakes.

Only once have I ever thought differently. It's the worst example of officiating I ever saw in more than 50 years of watching football, and the only time I ever thought a crew was on the take.

In the '95 Bama-Arkansas game, we led 19-13 in the final minute of the game, but Arkansas was driving deep in Bama territory. Here's where it gets interesting. On two consecutive and critical plays in the final seconds, Arkansas had 12 men on the field... and it didn't get called either time. I don't mean 11 men in formation and the 12th trying to get off the field. I mean 12 guys lined up for a power run to the left with an extra blocker. I've watched roughly 1500 football games in my life and NEVER seen too many men on the field NOT get flagged except in this game. It's not a judgment call. You can't miss it. It sticks out like a sore thumb... yet every official on that field "didn't see it" while the announcers, the fans, and the Bama sideline all saw it and were going nuts screaming at the refs. On top of that, after the first play, our coaches let the refs have it, pointed it out, and yet they "missed it" again on the next play too with Arkansas lined up in exactly the same 12-man formation.

Finally, with only 7 seconds to go, Ark threw a pass into the endzone that clearly bounced - you could easily see the ball kick up turf and change direction. Not even a close call and would be overturned on review today 100% of the time, yet the refs "missed" that one too and called it a TD. Arkansas kicked the PAT and won 20-19.

What that crew did was no honest mistake or just a blown call. It was intentional. It was so blatant that the SEC suspended the entire crew within 2 hours of the game and made the suspension indefinite within 48 hours. Not a single member of that crew has ever officiated a college game in the 17 years since. They've been effectively blackballed for life. I've seen plenty of blown calls go against my team over the years, but no more so than against any other team, and they all tend to even out. This wasn't a blown call. This was a corrupt officiating crew.

It was '95, you need to let it go. I know it's hard to, but for your own good, let it go.

Michigan a few years ago, either 2008 or 2009, was absolutely atrocious. Multiple blatantly missed calls.

LOL! That's probably good advice. I've gotten over every bad call that's ever gone against us except that one. Every Bama fan I know is still steamed over that one, though. A blown call is one thing. A crooked officiating crew is another!

I like the topic. I once had a ref in HS tell me if I kept grabbing his face mask I would be ejected. I said "What in the hell are you talking about your face mask?"

Booted for disrespecting an official. My coach blamed the team for playing like pussies lol. Said if I wasn't the only one running around killing folks, the refs would have booted us all.

Bad... just bad..

(We were so bad. I remember Munir Prince asking me to quit punching him in the "boys" during a game. I said I don't have anyone else so when you're on the sidelines, I get a breather. He laughed.)

Oklahoma at Oregon in 07. Refs blew an onside kick call...then an obviously tipped ball on a pass interference call. Worst part was that both were reviewed. Cost OU a chance to play OSU for the natty. Pac-10 refs were suspended 3 (I think?) games for their bullsh!t.

Navy 2008 was brutal. I was at the game and had to sit in the pouring rain for the whole 4th quarter which made it seem worse than it probably actually was.

This is a great thread idea... will respond in detail when I get home from work. In recent memory Michigan in 09 and Stanford 07 stick out. Michigan 09 caused us to reformat the officiating agreement with Michigan and also singularly caused me to begin hating the Big Ten.

If it makes you feel better I'm 0-3 against Navy. Yes, that means I've witnessed every loss in most of our lifetimes!

Worst officiating I have ever seen was when I was a little league baseball pitcher.
This one game I am absolutely throwing smoke down the middle, I owned that plate. Yet EVERY single pitch was called a ball.
It got so bad that parents of the OPPOSITE team were yelling at the umpire to play fair.
In about the middle of the 5th inning I am made aware by my coaches(including my father) that the umpire is the father of a kid on the opposing team. The next time his kid comes up I take the officiating out of his hands and bean his kid in the back. Best moment of my life. :)

We tend to forgot that Colorado was the benefactor that year of two terrible calls: the infamous fifth down game versus Missouri.

'05 USC comes to mind, but that comes down to the final minute with multiple issues from the PAC-10.

As far as officiating crews on a whole, I've got no love for Pac-10 or B1G refs. Can't remember too much bad officiating out of Big 12 or Big East, but then again I don't see many Big 12 games. SEC is kind of middle of the road for me.

Five paragraphs about a game from seventeen seasons ago...

Ummm, the point of the thread is the worst officiating we've ever seen. What difference does it make as to when it was? Some of the older posters may have memories of a particularly bad example from the 50's or 60's.

I always thought that game was the reason Notre Dame will never join the big whatever-that was bad-a real hammer job and then the call on Allen for putting his finger to his mouth to quiet the crowd. They ended up with great field position. To this day that screw job is why I think Notre Dame thumbs their nose at the big -----------. As a side note LSU got jobbed at Alabama 3 years ago. Call on the interception made no sense. Seemed like they were afraid to make the call.

was that the same crew that DID grimes on his TD catch against stanford???

I'm embarassed to say, I was so pissed I wrote the PAC 10 commisioner? or maybe the head ref?...and he responded. He was none too happy I copied every pack 10 AD, and a host of others...

...yea perspective was in order ... won the game anyway, and it wasn't like there was a bowl game in the ballance...but something about how it went down set me off...
