I did not feel comfortable with any of Zaire's holds yesterday. More importantly, it did not look like Brindza did either. The announcers pointed out how he didn't spin the ball on the missed FG in OT, but it felt worse than that...nothing looked smooth, natural, or quick. Hunter Smith, on the other hand, has missed a few very critical snaps. But when he catches the ball, his holds have been fine.

Before yesterday, Brindza had attempted 24 extra points and 17 field goals. On 41 kicks, we had battery failures 3 times, or 7% of the time. Two of those failures were in the Stanford game with weather from hell.

Four frozen, one thawed, and two in Kelly's woodshed(Smith and Redfield) have given me an empty feeling this year.

obviously we won't know for sure, but that switch seemed to be more of a kneejerk reaction to Smith's third muff. I think it was Lou Somogyi who wrote that as frustrated & inexcusable as it was w/ Hunter, if there's not a player who can concentrate full time on that role, it doesn't make sense to switch mid stream if the replacement option is a kid who has to concentrate more on his backup QB reps. Somogyi acknowledged that BK had alluded to a change but reassured himself & readers that surely he would change his mind the more he thought about it. Guess not.

Yea, the knee-jerkiness is what bothered me about it. Maybe Malik looked better in practice.

Yes, me too. This is one of the few complaints I have about Kelly. He is given to knee-jerk reactions. It kind of reminds me of the Pitt game in 2012 ... Golson threw a pick and got benched for Rees, then Rees threw a pick and got benched for Golson again. That yo-yo-ing is silly and makes you look like you don't really know your team or have confidence in either guy. Sometimes you have to go with the guy who you think is the best guy for the job and just put your faith in him. I think that's the case with this holder situation. You want stability in the kicking game so your kicker can just do things by rote; you don't want him thinking about the battery. I think Kelly should have stuck with Hunter Smith a bit longer.

Wonder what the betting line would have been for talking about this subject at the beginning of the season?

He has good hands. But I just keep seeing the ball go through his hands, bounce of his pads, fall into ASU defenders hands and run in for a TD.

He has such good hands that once it went through his hands, it actually hit his hand AGAIN before being picked off.

Someone on the team should show some goddam heart/balls and walk into BK's office and say I'm holding for kicks going forward. Period. Mic drop.

100% serious

[player walks into Kelly's office]

"I'm going to be holding kicks from now on."

[proceeds to fuck up every kick]

Obviously I'm not suggesting some defensive lineman do it. Someone that believes they are capable should though. Corey, Koyack, etc..

Step 1. Get all the walk-ons (or potential walk-ons) out to the field at 6 AM.
Step 2. Spray them with wind and water in 20 degree weather and hire a bunch of drill sergeants to scream in their face.
Step 3. Snap the ball to them.
Step 4. Pick the guy who catches most of them.

I'm all for removing the kicking game and going for it on 4th down and 2 point conversions. Fuck italics.

We are slowly seeing the deterioration of all of our special teams. The punt and kickoff returns have been garbage for a while. More and more shitty punts and missed FG by the game.
