So will we treat the situation as first come, first serve?

(Besides Agholar, Odenigbo, Treggs, Marshall, Shaq, Diamond, etc. [lol])

Haaa.. It really feels that way with all the top tier kids we're chasing.. I think we take first come, first serve and hold a spot for Agholor while continuing to recruit him hard and push for a pre Feb commit. He is that good IMO.

With the signing of 5 OL from last year's class, I'm not so sure we actually take 4 OL this year. It could be 3. And with the recent announcement that GAIII will stay at RB, I'm not totally sure we take another RB-- provided his name isn't Keith Marshall.

Note: I realize there are reports out there that say we are taking __ recruits at a certain position this year, but those reports are mainly coming from the mouths of high school seniors relaying the coaching staffs' words. Add in the fact that the coaches can't say anything at all about recruits until NSD and that they are pretty tight-lipped about recruiting anyway, and I'm led to believe the "reports" we've heard may not be very accurate.

What if neither of the Marshalls or Russell want to come to ND? Do we still sign another RB because the coach supposedly wants to sign 2 in this class? Would coach Kelly sign, say, a 3 star project RB and potentially not invite Cwynar back because of the numbers? What if only 1 of the elite OL we're recruiting wants to come? Does the staff then sign some 3 star project type just because we think we need another OL on the roster? What if Yuri Wright and Shaq Thompson both decide they'd like to come to ND? What if they both decide they'd like to do so, and those top RB's and OL decide they do NOT want to come to ND? Do we tell one of them no in order to sign a long term project at either RB or OL?

I obviously have no clue what the answer is to any of those questions. I don't think the coaching staff knows exactly what they would do. There are just so MANY variables. Another thing BK and his staff have to keep in mind is that as low as the numbers may be this year in the recruiting cycle, they will be even worse next year. Perhaps the staff may not try and squeeze every single scholarship out of this cycle that they can, and instead, hold onto a couple more 5th years this year to help boost the overall scholarship numbers for next year. I've talked about the overall balance in recruiting for the past couple months (i.e. trying not to oversign a particular position in any one cycle). Next year there will only be about 17 open scholarships. And we HAVE to sign a QB and a TE. That leaves about 15 scholarships then for WR, OL, RB, DL, LB, and DB.

Ultimately, I think BK and crew will handle all of this okay. I have every confidence in the world that they will do a good job with the scholarships. I think, though, that it's sometimes one of the huge difficulties of being a college head coach.

This a great analyst. Reps will follow.

If ND doesn't fill some of the positions they are looking to fill at this time then I wouldn't think they give a "second-tier" player a schollie and hope he fills the spot. To me they will go after the other elite prospects on the board. No RBs..ok ND will take more WR (Treggs, Payton, Agholor...for example). I understand what you say you don't want to load up on one position where it's too saturated but you have to account for what if one transfers...what if one gets hurt...what if one doesn't live up to potential then next thing you know you are thin again and the cycle continues.

Coach Kelly wants "his" kids in there that will be there for the next 3-5 years. If this means having to cut some 5th years to look at the long-term of the program then I think they will do that.

Kelly also truly recruits most players as athletes, and has no qualms about moving players to where he thinks they will fit best, given the depth chart and their skill set. An extra WR "recruit" may very well be part of the backfield or secondary in a year or two. This fact is why I am not really concerned with particular skill player position numbers. Same with linemen. I am more inclined to look at it in terms of linemen vs. skill players than skill position vs. skill position and the like. That being said, I think if the there are 6 spots, at least 3 remaining will go to skill position players.

I still believe that coach doesn't want "short" classes in the lines. Despite what the board always believes as they drool all over the "skill" guys [as if the O-Line has no skill], Kelly has repeatedly said that football starts and finishes with the lines. What Hoke is doing recruiting wise this year backs that. What Alabama and LSU do every year should end the debate.

Having said that, IF Coach REALLY has opportunity to sign several EXTREMELY elite "skill" guys, maybe he'll stop at just one more O-Line [for talking purposes, say Stanley]. The reason that I'd think he would be willing to roll those dice is Jarron Jones. The big man might represent enough flexibility in that roll to say "well I can't pass up Marshall, Agholor, Thompson, Agholor's buddy, Treggs, Ekanem, etc etc etc".

You guys are jumping the gun a bit. The truth is there may not be any commits that weekend. Several guys like Agholor or Shaq will likely decide late. Others will be making their first visit.

After looking over everything again, this is what I've been thinking, as well.

There are no likely commits but I find it hard to believe we won't blow at least one of those guys away.

Spots are filling up. If it's a nice weekend and we win, I think at least one recruit bites.

We will have three commits within a week.

That's my guess.

One more will pull the trigger when they worry about spots within two weeks.

This is what I was thinking. With so many visiting, I have to believe atleast one will pull the trigger.

Might I mention there is a deviation +/- 99.9%

In other words, statistics is just another way of saying I don't have the sure answer.

Hell, we might have 7 - 8 out of this or none.

Got any predictions on who it will be?

I looked up a bit of O-Line recruiting. Alabama recruits about 4 1/2 per year. LSU recruits four. They had one light year [in last five] but signed five TEs so that's suspicious. Wisconsin averages four. Last year they whiffed with only two, but four of their first eleven this year are O-Line. So, I think that power programs like to average four per year.

By the way, looking these up in Rivals archives, I was doing Michigan but about two years back I got nothing. Instead was a notice: this university does not have a football team, either select another university or switch to basketball. No Kidding! That's what it said!

My reason for posting this here is that I am beginning to imagine Kelly only taking three O-Line since Prestwood signed on as a 5th for last year's group. Other power schools seem to be willing to stagger a "big" class with a smaller. This would give us that option to play with.

Looking at our own history though, it convinced me that there was poor roster management here and we just got lucky. Dever's class had only three; Cave's four; ZMartin's three; Lombard's two [James dying, and Heggie added to make three]. We got lucky because we only had one transfer and only one player who will apparently never develop. Imagine if we had more transfers and some chronic injuries, or just a few duds. Kelly, being smarter than the average, is trying to use his brains rather than luck and get to averaging four per year like the big boys.

We by the way were double-lucky in that such a high percentage of our few linemen turned out to be exceptional ballers.

But... the point here is to say that once Stanley verbals, MAYBE Coach will think that the fourth O-Line isn't absolute, but just one of several possibilities. Still, that means four the year after that.

Feeling confident? Or something I haven't heard?

I'm starting to think that maybe we wow one of the 2013 guys there, and they pull the trigger. I don't have any info that points to this or anything, but I just don't know what guys from this year would commit. Of course, I've lost track of who all is attending the game.

So say coach plans on gaining the commitment of Stanley, does he take another ol out of Peat, Banner, Diamond?

Possibly but it all depends on timing and who else has commited at that point but that is just my opinion and by no means do I have any inside info.
