Wright, Shumate, Wilson and all the other guys might be sweating for a spot if we are filling up. Could be one of them.
How many more guys can we take at DB anyways?
Just did. First recruit thread I've ever made!![]()
Sweeeet! Did you find any vids on him? I wanna see him in action!
On another note, who do you think is our top priority recruits? I mean we dream for DGB and Geno etc, but who do you think is essential for the Irish to pick up? After listening to the Power Hour, it sounds like we only have about 12 spots left, and many 4-5 stars looking our way. Who do you think would be the top 3 that Kelly would send Diaco to their house at 4:30 am? My guesses would be K Marshall, Aglohor, and either Garnett/Simmons.
What say you?
Top priority recruits?
I would have to say a DT. Maybe Day or Jones.
RB too. Either Marshall and whoever else.
Au contraire..... I've heard repeatedly now over on ISD that ND is NOT recruiting a true NG at this point. Day, Kirven, etc. are being recruited for DE with the ability to slide inside if needed.
Apparently this is why we haven't offered Shittu yet and have some oddities in the recruitment of Schutt. I personally don't get it at all.
Whatever works for the staff, at this point, works for me. I haven't given up on them as I had for the likes of Charlie Weis. Just think how many times UF will throw the screen pass in a row.

I'm pretty certain that Jones projects as a SDE in Diaco's system, much like Tuitt. He's tall and rangy; doesn't profile as a NT.
Made me smile. It's hard to maintain a "schematic advantage" when you're so damned predictable.
I have warned a co worker that's a gator fan to expect to see a plethora of screen passes...

The other thing which might help everyone soothe their fevered brows is that last year, by the end of the first week in July, we had twelve commitments. Kelly is almost exactly on pace.
Maybe this will be of interest to some, as everyone seems to be biting their fingers off out of either boredom or the fear that Michigan and Stanford will get all the good players and we will fall behind on recruiting.
Last year at this time, ND had twelve verbals: Carrico, Brindza, Grace, Springmann, Koyack [which made us deliriously happy], Hegarty [which did also], Farley, Justice Hayes [later to decommit], Jordan Prestwood [later to decommit], and in June, the last two: Hardy and Councell [who we became gradually delighted about].
That compares to Decker and Harrell, Shepard and Darby, Prosise and Baratti, Ferguson and Greenberry, Perkins, Turner, and our yearly specialist, Daly. This seems pretty comparable in both numbers and quality. In fact, one might say that given the healing needs in the future defensive backfield, Staff Kelly are doing a bit better [i.e. Blue Chips at exactly the right place].
In last July we added Brown and Rabasa. In August no one. At the start of the season we were sitting with a good class of 14 players [unless the decommits had already happened, but I don't remember it that soon], but not blowing away the nation.
September was when we emerged as a serious national threat for big things. This was due to the spectacular coup of convincing the Atkinson brothers to verbal. Suddenly Notre Dame was beginning to look like Speed rather than just "big ten". AND it was under the noses of the Cal schools. Davaris Daniels got his academics straightened out and we were viewed as rolling.
October was empty [except for the ongoing Lynch saga of course]. But verbals-wise none dates from then. Hayes was gone but in November Cam McDaniel verballed. In time the board would begin to see that we were likely FAR better off. Golson verballed in December. Racing to the finish line, Staff Kelly pulled off the legendary Tuitt/Lynch/Williams trifecta which will live in many ways in ND lore. Hounsell, with less emotionalism, was another last moment coup. On the down side, we lost Okotcha at the last minute to Oklahoma [typical Oklahoma behavior to successfully steal at the 11th hour]. And the staff ground out one last really tough guy for the line:Nick Martin. At the last second, juggling the likes of Carlisle, Scarlett, Huggins etal, we got a winner in Niklaus.
The bottomline then was that half the class came on board after the season started. The front end of the class was pretty good [with several players of NFL potential], but the back half was mind-blowing. Kelly seems to be going a similar route, and it is under harder circumstances regarding certain Blue Chips, since we are LOADED with talent in certain areas. IF he can finish anywhere near as strongly as he did last year, it will be two superclasses in a row. Yep, I still worry until NSD is over, but there is reason to be optimistic with this coaching crew.
With us already having 11 commits, 12 if you include prestwood, I hope the staff peers back their efforts on the (I'm going to get blasted for this, ready?) 3-star guys or the 'potential project' guys. We can only take 9 more guys if I'm not mistaken. With the season around the corner, and our big games like USC, Michigan, etc, that are going to get ND a ton of attention, having 9 slots left is a-ok for me. We have a solid base and I'd like to see them land some studs from here on out.
Totally agree. If you look at the best uncommitted guys, most of them still have us on their board. When it looks like guys like Juron Jones, K Marshall, J Payton, Shaq, DGB, etc will have longer decision making processes, and have us in the mix, we have to hold spots open.
Not to mention, there are a ton of really talented kids (Shittu, Deiter, etc) that might jump all over an offer.
Time is on our sides, my friends.
This is what I was trying to say. 17-year old kids are emotional. For example, if we get 5 5-stars attending the USC game and it is like it was in 2005 (only we win) we could easily get all 5 to commit. We just need to save room for a situation like this I guess.
My point it kind of redundant. I have faith in the staff. I'm just bored today and wanted to share my thoughts. We could have a lot of interest if we win and make it to a BCS game, but I'm sure the staff is aware of that.
I understand that but 5-star guys are almost sure things... Next sure thing is a 4-star, etc, etc. Now I know 3-star athletes can become all-americans, but let's be realistic. More 5-star guys make a difference than 3-star guys. I'm just saying we have less than 10 spots left, let's save it for the best of the best. If the staff thinks a 3-star guys is better than some 4-star guy, so be it. I guess I should rephrase and say I hope they go after the guys THEY want most and peer back on the guys that they have medium interest in. Now that I think about this it sounds kind of stupid. I'm sure they know what they're doing. Sorry for blowing up!
This I totally dig. I agree that at this point in the game, they should be holding out for the guys at the top of their wish list at each position. I'd like to see us round out this class something like this. (Being as realistic as possible...IMO we have very little realistic shot with geno smith, tracy howard, DGB, Keith Marshall, etc.)
RB- Mahone
RB- B. Marshall
WR- Darboh
DL- J. Jones
LB- Spence
DB- Wright
OL- Peat
DL - Schutt or Day
Ath- A. Reeves
OL- J Garnett
DB - TJ Davis
Not a bad list! I'd like to see us round it out like this (and I think we have a very good shot with most of these guys):
RB: B. Marshall, W. Mahone
DL: J. Jones, K. Kirven
OL: A. Peat
WR: C. Brown
ATH: K. Russel, A. Reeves
S: Jarrod Wilson (bit of a reach at this point... you have to think the staff offered Turner in part because they did not envision adding Wilson)
CB: TJ Davis
OLB: Spence (not quite as bullish as I once was on Spence... but I'm not sure who else besides Odenigbo we really have a fighting chance at right now)
QB: none
TE: none
ILB: none
