Who do you want to replace Brian Kelly?

Lol so this.... happening during his tenure has nothing to do with him right, just 22 coaches who were so successful they achieved the impossible over a AD that needs canned.

Pft..

Again ur opinion of him is FB related only. If the "rumors" were Swarbrick wanted Kelly fired but the BOT didn't, would u be calling for the BOT to all step down?

U don't know shit about what's really going on, just a butt hurt quasi-fan.

Not sure why you waste your time arguing with someone who believes his opinion is the only correct opinion and, imo, is a troll because I have yet to see a single post that is not negative. Ignores facts and spews s bunch of rhetoric.

You didn't get me at all and your garbage post above is not worth responding to.

It is sad with the ND fan base how they think the sky is falling-- people are now wanting Swarbrick gone and there is a go fund me page...what kind of fans are we? Look at the program between 2007-2009.

I just cannot believe the negativity with all of the get rid of Kelly threads, bring in a new HC.....

I'd hate to wait on you at a restaurant....

What?

When did I say I "got you"? What is this 3rd grade?

I pointed out the lack of logic in your post and you replied by saying the same nonsensical dismissal of my criticism. It's fine to believe that Kelly or Swarbrick shouldn't be fired, If you where paying attention you'd know that I actually agree with the latter, but to say that no one can criticize either ones performance unless they have turned in their resume to try and do better is absurd.

I would hate to dine at your restaurant if you feel the customer has no right to complain about any dish they themselves don't know how to cook.

I go to many, many sports games at ND. I appreciate the others sports plenty, trust me. How many of those other coaches did Swarbrick hire? He hasn't been personally responsible for any distinguished coaching hires. He simply hasn't damaged the already successful sports programs here. Good for him.

It is idle to act as though the AD at Notre Dame does not have special obligations to the FB program. If Swarbrick cannot fulfill those obligations, we should hire a football-only AD and leave the other sports to Swarbrick.

U don't know shit about what's really going on, just a butt hurt quasi-fan.

So the 4-8 season didn't really happen?! And Kelly hasn't won 10+ games only twice in his 7 years here?! Because those are two things that I know.

Not sure why you waste your time arguing with someone who believes his opinion is the only correct opinion and, imo, is a troll because I have yet to see a single post that is not negative. Ignores facts and spews s bunch of rhetoric.

Yes, I shouldn't speak my opinion. I should speak your opinion. Right? Of course I think my opinion is true, otherwise it wouldn't be my opinion.

We just wrapped up only the fourth season in ND football history with 8+ losses (and that isn't my opinion). There isn't much to be cheery about as it relates to ND football.

Two questions.

1. Has it always been ND's policy to require athletes to stay on schedule to graduate in four years to maintain their eligibility?

2. Does this standard apply to the the entire student body and if so what happens if they fall behind?

The way I (an alum from 15 years ago) understand it: You have to take and pass a minimum number of credit hours to maintain eligibility for major extracurricular activities - such as football. That minimum courseload is big enough that it puts you on track to graduate in four years, especially with summer classes that most football players take. There's also a lot of academic support to help you get through, whether athlete or not. (Probably more for athletes though).
As for regular students, pretty much everyone takes a four-year track courseload. No one really goes to ND part-time the way you might at many schools. And if you wind up on academic probation at some point, no one's going to notice unless you're on the football team. In the end almost everyone graduates in four years, maybe with a summer thrown in. Many people switch to easier majors, but I can count on one hand the number of people I knew who didn't graduate.
Things may have changed since I was there. But I think that's generally how it goes.

College Football 2007 Preseason Rankings Comparison

Here's a compilation of 2007 preseason rankings from 7 different services. Not one had ND in the top 25. In 2016 we were somewhere between 8-12 in every one with a consensus of 10.

So maybe WE didn't see it coming in 2007 because this board is a bunch of homers (myself included) but nobody objective expected us to be good. Everybody expected us to be good this year.

So "outside the Top 25" is now the same as "I bet we only win 3 or 4 games"? I've never said that people thought we would be good, or that people didn't think that we might be average. What I said was that no one expected us to be 3-9! Because they didn't!

It's not worth it. Lax already provided the facts for why Swarbicknhas been our best AD in years and the guy completely ignored it because he had nothing to disprove Lax. He doesn't care about facts.

I was cheering on my middle school then, champ. Kelly has two ten win seasons in 7 years, compared to two 10 win seasons in 13 seasons. Against easier schedules, and with a much weaker USC and Michigan.

Kelly is at the level of DWW. We can call them the four failures.

Sure, that's fair- but my point (and the point others were making) is that people expected us to be GOOD this year. Not average. Not a maybe top 30 team. We were scared that our secondary would cost us a game or 2 and a shot at the playoffs.

Expectations were much higher going into this year, thus it was a much more disappointing season despite the extra win.

Kelly won 10 games twice with fewer scholarships than Holtz or his predecessors had available and with less academically talented ND student body.

Kelly won 10 games twice without a full time recruiting coordinator.

Sagarin lists ND with the 31st Toughest Schedule this year. About a FG in strength less than the Toughest Schedule.

Only 10 teams in Sagarin's Top 40 played a schedule tougher than ND's. Here's a couple, Clemson with the #40th Toughest Schedule, or UW with the #60 Toughest, Louisville #66, Houston #75, Boise St #79, WMU #118.

But as usual, don't let a fact or two get in the way of YOUR mis-informed opinion.

I think Espn has an article out right now about how wrong preseason expectations were for more than just ND.

I don't know why people keep saying this. Going into 2007, we were coming off of a 10 win season. We had just signed the "best QB to ever come out of HS" in Jimmy Clausen, and we also had two 4* RBs coming in, in Armando Allen and Robert Hughes, to join up with 2006 5* RB James Aldridge. Where do you get that people were expecting us to suck in 2007?

I am pretty sure we were expecting a lean year. This was worse because of the returning talent.

WOW...WOW...WOW...

I've only read that past 2 pages of this thread and I am speechless.

I get it fans want to win, fans want a National Championship, a top 5 recruiting class every year, that 5* player to play like he did in high school, etc.

I've stood by Kelly this season, yes I think he should get a chance to redeem himself next year, and if we have a season like we did this year next year changes should be made.

The extreme of what fans are saying and what they are willing to do....ARE YOU PEOPLE TRUE FANS?!?!

Everyone has their opinion about hiring another head coach, what if that head coach doesn't get a NC or win or get big name recruits...then what, do you want that coach out??

I love this board...but damn!

Go Irish!

This fan wants this team to compete. I would love a championship in my lifetime, but first I want to be able to go toe to toe with the big boys and remain consistent. Consistently winning 9-11 games a year shouldn't be hard here.

So achieving 10+ wins (with blowout bowl losses) twice in 7 years is now acceptable at ND. Defining deviancy down...

It's always something with this guy, right? Turf? Music? A jumbotron? Does Stanford have all this stuff? They have 17 more wins than ND since Kelly became the coach here.

Let's review some facts. The average Sagarin SOS ranks for the four failures (rounded):

Davie (98-01): 21
Willingham: 7
Weis: 29
Kelly: 26

So Kelly has had harder schedules than Weis. He has had easier schedules than Davie and Willingham. What is your point?

I guess we should be happy with 4-8 against the 31st toughest schedule? Which, by the way, is the 5th easiest schedule we've had since 1998 according to Sagarin, but the occasion for only the fourth season in ND history with 8+ losses.

Again, I'm looking for evidence of substantial improvement over the previous failed coaches. I'm not finding much. Nothing to worry about, though: I'm sure that all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.

Are you serious? You need evidence that Kelly is an upgrade over the previous 3? How about this was his first losing season at ND? Weis had 1 losing season and another with only 6 wins but coached 2 less years. Kelly is the only coach to win 8 or more games 6 years in a row. He's the only one to have an undefeated regular season, finish #1 in the regular season polls, and appear in a national championship game.

I'm not saying he's the answer long term but he has without question been an improvement over what ND football looked like since Holtz left. And I have doubts that anyone will be able to come in and win consistently. Kelly was as close to a grand slam hire as you can get. Back to back 10+ win seasons at Cincy and turning around the CMU program is so similar to PJ Fleck who most ND fans seem to be foaming at the mouth to get up in South Bend. If Kelly, with his resume and experience, couldn't get it done, why do we think Fleck can?

People don't want Fleck solely because of his resume. They want him because he is the anti-Kelly. Loved by his players, awesome recruiter, high energy and positive attitude. In fact the only reason anyone is against Fleck is because his resume is similar to Kelly's.

Here's how I see it:

A bunch of people are adamant that Kelly MUST be fired. So they are trying to create this impression that this is the worst season ever, BY FAR, in ND history. In order to help create and reinforce that impression, they are trying to make it sound like 2007 was expected, so no one can point to that year and say, "Well, we've actually been here before." Most disappointing is subjective. What is most disappointing to you might not be, to me. I'm not trying to tell anyone that they shouldn't be more disappointed in this year than in 2007. But I am trying to keep things in perspective. No one saw 3-9 coming, in August of 2007. It's VERY comparable to this year, in terms of disappointment.

With 2017 being a throwaway, we should probably reframe this thread to discuss who might be available for 2018.

this is what I don't get with you.. Earlier you say you don't see this team winning 5 games next year.. I said the Ceiling is 10 but I don't see any reason they don't win min 8.. You act like Kelly making stupid decisions in a hurricane is reason this team can't make a jump next year.. Kelly won 10 games 2 years ago with an injured riddled team.

Do I love Kelly? No, but I sure think we will be a very competitive team and No way am I throwing away 2017 and hate to break it, if Irish win 8 or 9 games next year. Kelly will be back

NDCrusader: Second the opinion on Jimmy Lake at Washington. Dynamite recruiter, young, up and coming, best DB unit in the country with one 5* and mostly 3* kids that they coach up. Him and Sanford as a young OC/DC combo would be ridiculous.

I guarantee you saw no reason to win less than 8 this year and look what happened. In fact, you predicted a 10-2 record for this season (as did I).

Absolutely.. I will admit.. I will always have some ND Bias.. I did this year, I did in 2007... Writing is on wall with all the talent we lost plus Max being kicked out.. Losing Crawford.. I still thought, Well he have a first rd QB, We can score 40 on everyone and I admit my logic was flawed.. I could be way off next year.. but looking at the talent returning on offense and defense.. IF we can can develop a couple of these young DL, maybe we got a shot at a nice season.. I also thought in 2012 We had a 50/50 shot to beat Bama, so what do I know

When Kelly was at Cincy, I do not recall anyone having any reservations about him as far as energy and an x's and o's standpoint. There were no articles or memes of him screaming at players or assistants, he had a great special teams at Cincy, and his resume was superb. There really wasn't anything to complain about. And he was a politician so I remember people thinking he would be a good fit because he wouldn't embarrass ND. Many wanted Stoops but of the up and comers, the 3 big names were Kelly, Patterson, and Petersen. Kelly was the one everyone wanted because his resume was the best. I remember Edsall and a few others were thrown in but Kelly was considered the slam dunk hire. I'm not saying Fleck or Rhule wouldn't be good hires but their resumes are not as good now as Kelly's was in 2009. This is Fleck's first great season and Rhule has turned Temple around but he hasn't had an undefeated season or consistent 10-11 win seasons. My concern is that we will get rid of a coach who has gotten ND back into contention, despite this God awful year, and replace him with someone who can coach a MAC level school but will get destroyed at a place like ND.
