Being fair. I know he can't just sit and talk to every Tom, Dick and Harry about the Kelly situation, but i'm i just being a lunatic thinking that there is still a chance there is something going on since he is refusing to talk to the media?

There will always be 25ish (quality) players that will want to play at ND regardless of record. This is the only embarrassment that I see. Chanting fire Kelly and writing this, why would any player sign up to be on a campus that is willing to do that to it's people. Quickest way to driveway players, keep it up. Not a classy move

Yes, and yes. Nolan asked him just about every question that has come up on here in the last week or so. Swarbrick did dodge a couple of the questions, but he pretty much said he was dodging them, and gave his reasoning. Watch the video, you'll see.

I think who the Ws and Ls are against are way more important than the total of either. This program desperately needs some signature wins. 10-2 doesn't matter if the two losses are against the only two decent teams on our schedule

If we go 10-2 I could see a good win against a decent team in there, a close loss to the other good team, and then a blowout to Miami of Ohio as the other loss. I mean, that's kind of what we do, right?

This is kind of the argument, right? At year 6 in his tenure, there's no reason (or so the argument goes) we should be setting lower expectations than that.

I think there are two narratives to explain this season: one is that due to some bad luck the team lacked leadership/didn't click and despite that we only lost one game by more than a single score and have a ton of potential and we just need more time and a competent DC in the offseason to bring it all together and be a contender next year.

The other is that we just kind of sucked and lost close games to bad teams and got blown out of the water by the best team we faced all year. In this scenario, we can't expect much next year either.

It's probably a mix of both. But the closer it is to scenario 1, the stronger the case for keeping Kelly. If the team just kind of sucks at this point, it's on him and it's time to bring in some new blood. People who are setting a 10-2 bar probably think the truth is closer to scenario 2 but would be willing to be proven wrong.


e. another way to think about it is to ask how much of an outlier this season was. Most people here probably expect a coach at ND to average 9-10 wins a year (imagine a bell curve that peaks at 9 with a standard deviation of +/- 3 wins).

Does "the right way" just refer to academics? Seriously asking it isn't a rhetorical question. The reason I ask is that Saban seems to keep his kids under control. They seem to be generally good kids. Urban had his fair share of criminals at UF but at OSU he hasn't many problems. I don't see either of them allowing thuggish behavior. But they do bring in kids that are academically challenged and I get ND not allowing that.

I don't know why people keep saying this. Going into 2007, we were coming off of a 10 win season. We had just signed the "best QB to ever come out of HS" in Jimmy Clausen, and we also had two 4* RBs coming in, in Armando Allen and Robert Hughes, to join up with 2006 5* RB James Aldridge. Where do you get that people were expecting us to suck in 2007?

Agreed. It would certainly be brash and uncalled for. Swarbrick has represented ND very well and has stayed course despite the fans who constantly yell to have every coach fired after any loss.

I was about to express the same question and opinion except I disagree that they bring in kids that are academically challenged. The NCAA has academic standards that must be met in order to qualify to play. Now the admissions standards for athletes at Alabama and OSU are lower then at ND but that does not mean the kids that go to the other schools are academically challenged. They just might not meet the academic qualifications to gain admission into ND; but that is a ND self imposed restriction and not the fault of either Alabama or OSU.

Because we were throwing a bunch of freshmen out there- if I remember right our O-line featured 3 freshmen, Clausen didn't start the season but took over after our offense went nowhere in the first quarter, and just none of it was all that surprising.

Zbikowski was the only key player from the 2005/06 teams to return- we'd lost Shark, Quinn, Walker, Fasano, and a bunch of other bad dudes I'm forgetting.

e. I mean because August is forever a time of optimism in CFB maybe people had unrealistically high expectations going into the season but at least the results could be justified on reflection. I don't think that's true this year- we had talent and experience in almost every position and we lost to inferior teams. I was really worried about our secondary heading into this year and though 8-4 was a realistic goal but I never conceived of the idea that we'd go 4-8 and I still don't see how we pulled that off. In 2007, I saw exactly how that happened.

I mean have you ever seen the clearinghouse requirements? They're a pretty low bar.

I think what matters is that the athletes at ND are ACTUALLY students- they go to the same classes, they take the exams, they do homework etc... To the extent ND imposes limitations on who it recruits, it stems from that fact- they're not looking for kids who can clear an artificial bar, they're looking for kids who won't be overwhelmed by the academic experience.

Yeah, it refers to Notre Dame a: expecting it's student athletes to be students and b: not using questionable tools like greyshirts and over-signing.
