Who do you want to replace Brian Kelly?

Thanks for sharing...I've always respected Murtaugh.

I agree with him on Petersen being the closest to perfect candidate and it's worth a try, but I seriously doubt he could be pried away from the Pacific NW.

Now, with the realistic choices that Eric listed (with gun to his head), I agree with all of them but would feel compelled to add Mullen. Anyone else is likely a coordinator currently like Schiano whom I'd also love to see given an interview.

Of the realistic options, MacIntyre seems like the best choice based on resume. With his second rebuild, the only question is "can it be sustained?". I doubt we will find out because I suspect he'll be poached by a bigger program soon.

Rhule or Fleck would be tied for #2 on my list. I think Fleck will be hired soon after the MAC Championship game and if they get upset by Ohio, that tells me he & his team have lost focus by being distracted by his job offers. What I would hope from ND is they wouldn't rake a guy over the coals for infidelity. I'm not excusing what happened, but he's not the only divorced HC. My understanding is that his first marriage started to crumble upon the tragic death of his baby son. That circumstance doesn't make it any more acceptable, but makes it understandable compared to the norm. He strikes me as a better leader of young men than Kelly is at ND. If the collars are going to judge Fleck on his infidelity, it begs the question how Kelly has survived the scandals under his watch (& mediocre record).

Looking at ND coaching history, the ones that had a bad year like Kelly usually play out as follows: impressive bounce back year after a losing season before regressing back to another losing season. That happened to Brennan, Kuharich and Davie. In other words, it's going to be really difficult for Kelly to rid himself of the stench of 4-8 in 2016. 9-3 or better at ND next year likely takes MacIntyre off the table as he'll be poached by a big program. Fleck will likely be in year one at his next destination. Rhule's destination may hinge on how Temple fares next year. If they regress, the power 5 teams likely back off. If he has a 2015-like run, he can write his own ticket.

This time next year will tell us a lot.

The only one on that list I'd believe as a rebuild and sustain guy is Petersen. He belongs in South Bend at some point in his journey...'18 would work for me.

per wiltfong---wouldn't be SURPRISED to see an offer of 3 years to the next DC as a way to entice a big time DC or those affraid of BK on the hot seat

Are you my long lost brother?
That's what I've done every Saturday this fall instead of watching Notre Dame get beat up.

This topic may need it's own thread.

I asked my wife for a Gransurs Bruks splitting Maul for Christmas. Something magical about splitting wood especially in winter.

No to Schiano. Way too much PSU baggage and therefore too risky. Good chance that something bad will come out in the next five years.

Doug Martin looks like he's on the phone with his girlfriend who is telling him, "You either tell your wife tonight or I'm going to tell her".

What does Schiano have to do with PSU?

He was an assistant there. I believe he testified against Sandusky as well.

I'm pretty sure his players hated him in Tampa though, and he had fallen off by the last couple of years at Rutgers. He's still a good defensive mind, but I don't think he's the home run hire that others do.

If ND is doing their due diligence, I don't see a problem with reaching out to him as a HC candidate. Meyer quickly dismissed the "baggage" after he was hired. If there was something there, the media would've dug it up by now IMO. McQueary just received a huge defamation settlement, so throwing every assistant under the bus that worked at PSU in the Sandusky era has proven overkill. The President, AD & Paterno are where that blame ultimately falls.

To be clear, I don't think he's a homer until hire but someone worth looking at.

You may know more than me though. What is the "something bad" that you believe will come out in next five years? Why not now? Just curious.

The one thing you have to remember about reporters for subscription sites is that they must generate clicks. No news = no clicks.

So when you have periods of complete silence like this on the part of ND, the reporters have to create some type of buzz to generate clicks. I'm not saying that they are making news up (although some surely do) but you have to really take everything they say with a bit of healthy skepticism.

They really have no reason to fear being wrong because no one is going to remember what Reporter A said about this in a few months. Other reporters generally won't call their competition out because they don't want to be called out themselves. Plus they can easily backtrack and just say "things changed."

wiltfong even said after talking w/ some people this week, he feels BK is back

If the Board has made a decision to retain him then Swarbrick really needs to issue a press release. It doesn't need to be a vote of confidence type thing, just a "Coach Kelly is interviewing new additions to the staff and we are excited for 2017" or something like that. The speculation and uncertainty is a really bad look and it could be easily remedied by a statement.

Or we can just assume a final decision has not been made until we get such a release.

just for the record...wiltfong was asked and only posted it as a response...he didn't tweet this out or anything looking for people to click it

I was just making a general statement but the same logic applies to that situation. If a subscribers ask Wiltfong questions and he doesn't respond with anything interesting he is going to lose subscribers.

Again, not saying Wiltfong, in particular, makes stuff up, but when you have multiple reporters saying conflicting things it's obvious that some of them are bullshitting.

That statement is outdated therefore irrelevant. The situation got far worse after that statement, rumors swirled about Kelly looking elsewhere, recruits are flat out asking coaches who is going to be around next year.

A statement takes little effort and ends all of this. If Swarbrick thinks that October statement is helping things, he is completely out of touch.

I have seen that theory floated all over the place because it logically explains the radio silence. It's either that, or Swarbrick is completely mishandling this situation.

That's my vote, I believe he painted himself in a corner and is just hunkering down waiting for the storm to past.

I don't know. Jack seems smart enough (I know he screwed up the extension thing) to realize the storm isn't just going to go away, this is ND football after all. I'm going with the BOT wanting to see if any big names are interested first before Kelly gets another year.
