Who do you want to replace Brian Kelly?

If this shit plays out, I may skip 2017 and take up ham radio or something. Talk about wasting an entire season....
That would be a fun thread. "2017 Hobbies in Lieu of Watching Football." I've been really into splitting and stacking firewood recently. I could have twenty cords for winter 2017-18 with the amount of time I spend tracking Notre Dame football.

I've gone back to school and with the purchase of a new house have found a lot of distractions.

Think I'll make that thread, gonna steal your title.

I will essentially sit out 2017 (i.e., lurk) if he stays on.

That is what I have done this year. With the exception of checking scores, like I do all teams, I havent watched 10 min of ND football all year.

Not worth the frustration. I cannot fathom someone spending the truckload of money for season tickets for this flop of a team.

Are you splitting it with a maul like a man, or do you have a gas-powered log splitter?

8 lb maul, and I have the shin damage to prove it. Last night I was splitting in the dark like an idiot, hit a glancing blow and shot the entire log flying at my kneecap.

To be fair to Jack, I don't think it's within his discretionary budget to make this decision.

Job1 for Jack is to make sure we have the right/best HC for the ND football team.
Job2 for Jack is to "convince whoever needs convincing" its time to make a move with the HC of the ND football team.

really like Jack, but if he cannot do both, or thinks we are OK at the HC position, then maybe its time for HIM to go too.

if Jack lets Kelly promote Elston (good grief, NO!) it will tell me all I need to know about the Jack/Kelly working relationship.

How about we start a "2017: Year of the Traitor" thread, where we track all of those users who have abandoned rooting for the Irish because losing hurts their little feelers too much? Inclusion on the list will trigger (see what I did there? "trigger") 2 consequences:

1. No one on the list can complain about the play calling, or the execution of the game plan, since they didn't watch a minute of any game(s).

2. They will be banned from posting in any celebratory threads, when this program finally gets it going and starts kicking ass again!

The first time I did it, I couldn't figure out the proper way to swing the maul down. First blow missed the target, missed the giant log I was using as a base, and went directly into concrete. I had no idea that form was so important in busting up some logs.

You split on concrete? How often are you replacing your maul, daily?

Go head. It has to be more healthy for you as well.

He was learning.

Not sure why everyone is against Elston as DC. He could turn out to be a very good DC.

Oh I agree, he could. However, now's not the time to try him out at DC. There are several good DCs that could come in and revamp the defense. Plus, though he's been a better recruiting coordinator than Alford was, the defensive recruiting still leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree with you, but that being said, it's just bad timing for Elston. New blood needs to come in on that side of the ball.

True. But he has never been a DC before. And this team won 4 games. So it feels like an external hire of a proven P5 coordinator is in order. To me this hire would basically be Kelly circling the wagons and saying screw you I'm keeping my buddies. Fire me if you want.

Concrete patio under the deck, where my man things are. I placed a giant log on the concrete, and then the logs I was splitting on top of that. It was fine, once I learned how to properly swing the splitter.

Not sure if these have been posted. 18 Stripes has been doing their own assessment of who should be the next head coach based on experience, winning, ceiling, realistic, fit and scheme. Pretty interesting if only as a thought exercise. At the bottom of the last article, Murtaugh gives his gun-to-head odds of who would be the next coach today if not BK.

One guy on that list that I like a lot, that doesn't get mentioned often is Willie Taggart. He's turned two programs around now, he's coached at Stanford so he understands our academic situation, he's coached with Harbaugh so he's seen what it takes to be great, he's got connections in a recruiting hotbed (Florida). Oh and he's the anti-Kelly when it comes to making adjustments. Like the article says, he's not afraid to change things up " his offenses have been really flourishing over the past 2 years. Taggart’s come to Jesus moment was 2 years ago when he abandoned his West Coast pro-style scheme for a “Gulf Coast” offense that utilized up-tempo and simple reads for his athletes. It’s paid off as the Bulls finished 2016 with the No. 2 S&P+ offense in the country."

Are you my long lost brother?
That's what I've done every Saturday this fall instead of watching Notre Dame get beat up.

I thought I read a report that he hit a player?

If that's the case he won't be here.

Here's a good example of how fickle the CFB coaching landscape can be:

ALOT of those guys were heralded as geniuses a few years ago or even sooner. Kirby Smart is on it FFS.

Chris Ash looks like he's desperately trying to hold the family vacation together after his wife's latest public meltdown.

Thanks for sharing...I've always respected Murtaugh.

I agree with him on Petersen being the closest to perfect candidate and it's worth a try, but I seriously doubt he could be pried away from the Pacific NW.

Now, with the realistic choices that Eric listed (with gun to his head), I agree with all of them but would feel compelled to add Mullen. Anyone else is likely a coordinator currently like Schiano whom I'd also love to see given an interview.

Of the realistic options, MacIntyre seems like the best choice based on resume. With his second rebuild, the only question is "can it be sustained?". I doubt we will find out because I suspect he'll be poached by a bigger program soon.

Rhule or Fleck would be tied for #2 on my list. I think Fleck will be hired soon after the MAC Championship game and if they get upset by Ohio, that tells me he & his team have lost focus by being distracted by his job offers. What I would hope from ND is they wouldn't rake a guy over the coals for infidelity. I'm not excusing what happened, but he's not the only divorced HC. My understanding is that his first marriage started to crumble upon the tragic death of his baby son. That circumstance doesn't make it any more acceptable, but makes it understandable compared to the norm. He strikes me as a better leader of young men than Kelly is at ND. If the collars are going to judge Fleck on his infidelity, it begs the question how Kelly has survived the scandals under his watch (& mediocre record).

Looking at ND coaching history, the ones that had a bad year like Kelly usually play out as follows: impressive bounce back year after a losing season before regressing back to another losing season. That happened to Brennan, Kuharich and Davie. In other words, it's going to be really difficult for Kelly to rid himself of the stench of 4-8 in 2016. 9-3 or better at ND next year likely takes MacIntyre off the table as he'll be poached by a big program. Fleck will likely be in year one at his next destination. Rhule's destination may hinge on how Temple fares next year. If they regress, the power 5 teams likely back off. If he has a 2015-like run, he can write his own ticket.

This time next year will tell us a lot.
