Who do you want to replace Brian Kelly?

Yeah sad part is even if we take the 13-11 stat for what it is, it's still way better than anything Kelly has done.

Yup. Anything around .500 is really, really good. Kelly:

2016: 0-2
2015: 1-3
2014: 0-4
2013: 3-2
2012: 3-1
2011: 1-4
TOTAL: 8-16

Chris Peterson would be a good choice. But he is never leaving the Pacific NorthWest.

this makes no sense, ok 13-11 but when those teams were ranked Shaw has beaten them 20 times over the past five years. That's insane, BK hasn't won a big game since 2012 and it seems like Shaw does it every couple weeks

Yeah. Except he has:

In 2013, ND beat Michigan State, who ended the season 13-1, won the Rose Bowl, and finished #3 in the polls.

In 2014, ND beat the #1 defense in the SEC, LSU, in the Music City Bowl. You can make the (weak) argument that LSU was unmotivated and didn't play hard. But playing the #1 defense in the "best" conference in the country is a big game.

I'd add Stanford in 2014.

Why? Their defense is ranked #40 in the country, which is much higher than ours, but not exactly a great ranking for a team that has played:

Rutgers
Idaho
Portland State
Arizona

Because he's one of the best defensive coaches in the country, it's 2016, and traditional stats are nearly meaningless. Here's Kwiatkowski's S&P+ national rankings in recent years, and UW is going to be rated very, very high again this year:

2015, Washington: 7th
2014, Washington: 56th
2013, Boise State: 36th
2012, Boise State: 23rd
2011, Boise State: 3rd
2010, Boise State: 1st

In the future Petersen/Kwiatkowski combo coming to South Bend is probably the ideal hire for Notre Dame. If we could pull them away from Washington...

I mentioned Peterson a few posts up, he would be a very good fit IMO. My understanding is he is a Pacific NorthWest guy and is not going to leave the area.

Supposedly he wasn't ever going to leave Boise St. (something about his son's health/therapy)...but he eventually did. I get that a move from Boise, ID to Seattle, WA isn't the same as a move from Seattle, WA to South Bend, IN, but you never know until you back the truck up and make an offer.

He left once from a job that he wasn't ever going to leave. I'd bet he would do it again.

He has a great track record and is undoubtedly a great coach. We probably still need to see how the season plays out before we all jump on the "Hire Peterson" bandwagon. He hasn't exactly been tearing it up in his time at Washington, and the Pac12 really seems to be down this year. But his historically (under the Harbaugh/Shaw regimes) good beatdown of Stanford is quite impressive.

Chip Kelly - HC
Dave Aranda - DC

Chip doesn't want to go back to college and makes $6 million a year.

Aranda has a guaranteed 3 year contract over $1 million at LSU. New coach at LSU could ask him to stay, or he could be on the market.

So something interesting to pay attention to but after Texas' loss today Charlie Strong might seriously be out in Austin at end of the year. He's certainly on the hot seat, and 7-5 probably gets him fired. This could be a really bad year to make a change if LSU, Texas, and USC are all looking for guys.

Alternatively, given his track record, does anyone think he'd be a really interesting re-tread option for ND?

I would hope he would get back to a better defense when he came here.

I think BK is going to reinvent himself as a good coach again next year, but if we ended up looking, I personally would welcome Strong, but feel he is in the same boat as BK: a good figurehead, but cannot be trusted to fill his staff alone or it will be all nincompoops.

I wanted Charlie Strong as a BK replacement a few years ago when I thought BK might bolt for the NFL. If Jack wants to make the change and Strong is on the market, he gets an interview. His defenses have underperformed the last two years for sure, but I still think he's a good coach. He's gotta bring in a great OC though.

How weird is it that his defense is so bad despite good recruiting AND a history of great defenses? I don't really get it.

Somebody mentioned that he couldn't bring his D line coach until this year. That wouldn't explain the defensive struggles this year. They suffer from a ton of the same issues that ND does. Bedford mat be out of a job at the end of the year even if Strong has another year. It's crazy to me.

Does anyone think that there are lingering hard feelings with BK's NFL flirtation? Jack has been quiet this year and I'm sure he's doing his homework in case a change needs to be made.

Could we get Paul Chryst? Do we want him?

He went to Wisconsin so I guess he wouldn't even leave them.

If we are competing with not just LSU but also Texas and USC for Herman's services, there is no doubt we don't get him. John Harbaugh, though...call him...

Strong or Pelini at DC paired with BK would immediately restore my faith in humanity.

Would be incredible, but even if Strong were to take a DC job, he'd have HC offers every winter. I'd say he stays two years max. Would be sweet while it lasts though.

Exactly. Living in the present and enjoying it would be a nice change of pace from looking to next year by week 2.

Not necessarily plus Strong would not take anything but a top job. Hell even if I only got three years out of him I'd gladly take it given that he could right the ship on defense for the future and help bring in some great recruits during that time.
